Minecraft has had a long history with Horror and Creepypastas, pretty much since the game came out with entities like 'Herobrine.' In this iceberg video essay I go through the most popular and least discovered Minecraft Horror games, characters and Creepypastas.

The “don’t look at the moon” is basically the story of a person who went insane and struggled to live his life normally because of his obsession with the moon after several coincidences happened like his computer crashing at the exact moment the moon starts to dip below the horizon, he took drugs to combat his obsession with the moon but as you can tell that made it worse and made it harder for him to live a normal life, eventually his friend made him go to therapy to treat his mental illness and thankfully today he is doing a lot better It basically tells you how much damage something so simple can do to someone if that someone is way too focused on it, it’s scary how quickly we can lose our minds

The null one is funny because there was a genuine glitch wherein the empty parts of a sign would be replaced with the word “null” I got affected by it when I was young and deleted my world out of fear, I regret doing that now cause the world was really cool but hearing about null now makes me giggle thinking about it

Around the time when I was 10 I was playing 1.7.2 on the family pc, a superflat world where I built an ugly ass hotel and put signs on/above the doors showing whos is whos room (imaginary friends) after I got bored I left that worlds and the next time I joined every single sign I had turned into null aswell, I was terrified its a singleplayer world I was confused, and just 2 years ago my now boyfriend told me about that null glitch, so it's fun to look back on how scary it was to me

Im pretty sure the "WAKE UP" could refer to when you beat the game. The narrator seems to talk about the player, steve... and at the end of all the text, it says.... "Wake Up" and you never actually did. You are stuck in this reality, always playing and being watched by.... The Overseer. The “white eyes” as it was apparently known was recently uncovered again as an old creepy pasta actually dating before herobrine. Consisting of a supposedly monstrous creature that’s less human then herobrine or most Minecraft creepy pastas are described, supposedly the creature is part spider and part skeleton with the titular glowing white eyes as part of its design, it actually was described as a “her” originally. I’m personally a much bigger fan of white eyes over other traditional Minecraft creepy pasta’s simply because it’s described as more malevolent and monstrous then others, not a “ghost” but a creature too which gives it a distinct vibe, also it’s age being set *before* herobrine makes it so much More interesting. Almost implies that herobrine is a victim of the white eyes

I think 3 AM being the "Witching Hour" came about with the mindset, minus extreme exceptions that no person awake and active at 3 AM has good intentions. Such activities could hypothetically include: graverobbing, burglary, robbery, silent murder and/or assassinations, ability to conduct immoral and/or illicit activities with minimal risk of being discovered and/or stopped, destruction of property, deliberately waking those asleep, and other things that I would not be allowed to write down here. If I am not misremembering, there was a pre-industrial revolution idea that connection to evil spirits and/or Hell is strongest at the time, especially with certain phases of the moon.

There used to be a creepypasta about an entity pretty much like Herobrine called "Lick". He had his own world seed and honestly it was creepy, with cross shaped holes all over the place and horses spawning on village light posts. I was very haunted by this as a kid, but no one seems to mention it nowadays, which makes me think it was probably just known by the hispanic community.

Its a simple story about a Steve starting off a Minecraft world. But when this Steve goes to punch wood, he breaks his hands and is met with agonizing pain. As night falls, he runs from the monsters but is eventually completely exhaustef and cornered by a Zombie who pins him down. The zombie slowly starts biting off parts of him as he can do nothing but mentally process the unimaginable pain. The zombie leaves him completely disfigured and immobile and wanders off. However, Steve is not dead. He cannot die. He lies there, unable to pass out, completely sentient and aware, his every moment one of complete agony. He is trapped like this for all eternity. He cannot die. This isnt like elevated horror or anything, but the author writes it in extremely graphic and gory detail, especially the part where he's being eaten alive. It legitimately disgusts you. Also, I just think the concept of being eternally sentient and acutely feeling all your injuries and pain even as you're just a corpse who can't even move is just deeply disturbing.

I reread the original Herobrine story and only now I noticed that it truly was one of the worst spawns of the early 2010s' creepy pasta high. It starts off with the reveal, Herobrine appears, and only afterwards the author describes that he discovers traces, that would usually build up to ultimately catching a glimpse of the creature in question. It really didn't take much effort to catch us as kids.

The moon one reminds me of a similar rumor about something that can allegedly happen in GTA 5. Apparently, on super rare occasions, the game's day and night cycle breaks, and the in-game sun doesn't rise when it's supposed to. This leads to strange things happening in-game, like NPC's randomly becoming aggressive, and animals behaving in strange ways. The whole idea is based on the concept that prolonged exposure to the moon can have negative effects on the human psyche, such as slowly making people lose their minds

Im 19, I’ve been playing MC for as long as I can remember so I’m well aware herobrine isn’t real but like a year ago I’m convinced I had some kind of supernatural encounter in the game. I was playing pocket edition and I made a new creative world. I spawn in and I just start flying around trying to think of what to build, as I’m flying I land on a hill with something dropped on the ground, and I notice it’s a full on wood plank. I swear the only time I ever opened the creative menu was to expand my map so the only items I ever took out were a crafting table and paper. I was playing on peaceful so there’s no way an enderman somehow spawned, died and dropped the block, furthermore there wasn’t even a village nearby to take a wood plank from. I swear I have ZERO memory of ever spawning in a wood plank and dropping it. No one had joined it was just me. However that wood plank got there made me feel really unnerved and unalone. I couldn’t stop checking the players section or checking the chat to see if anyone had joined and left. Maybe I just dropped a plank by accident, didn’t realise it and then spooked myself or I encountered a rare bedrock bug. Whatever it was it was the closest I ever felt to thinking I’d found herobrine back when I was like 10 when really it was just my friend trolling me with invisibility potions

When you said "Herobrine" is canon I immediately started thinking. My first thought is that he is obviously and ancient builder, but he is one who devoted his life to becoming God (kinda like Sa if you're obsessed with Honkai Impact like I am). Because I made this connection to Sa, I think it might be related to fighting the apocalypse and/or restoring his civilisation. The player might be created from genetic material that Herobrine saved.

There’s something so human about Minecraft horror with how we come up with these things to explain phenomena. Back then we’d blame unexplainable things on witches or demons and we really haven’t changed. Oh you see weird structures in the world? That’s just Herobrine trying to scare you. This multiplayer server is buggy? That’s just the spirit of a former developer haunting the servers. It’s basically a primal way to explain fear but in a modern setting.

My world is cursed. Giant holes in the water, trees flattening, I thought I saw Steve in my house at one point but my friend from Zerik Media told me that was probably because I have mob heads in my house and I tend to believe him. This makes me realize that the real reason these became so huge was because of the whole misunderstanding between how code actually works and this might sound weird but seeing as how many people don't understand how AI works, I want to see a revival of creepypastas including any sort of program that involves AI. (TLDR, KZbinr Eystreem has been proven to scam/trick his audience for like 6 years as he struggles to prove a series he created revolving a Minecraft Creepypasta as genuine.) Here is one some may remember but I couldn't find any outside information on. Several years ago, youtuber 'Eystreem' claimed to ask his community about a supposed banned seed he somehow managed to find (and still don't know how he found it). This seed allegedly had an in-game scientist doing experiments and Eystreem made a whole series to it with 80 Episodes, and a Season 2 with an additional 40 Episodes. I stopped watching him after season 2 ended as that's when he diverted to cringy content and If there is a season 3, I would like to binge that. Id say the original series was the most convincing, as season 2 appeared on more of a roleplay, which I am fine with and It's a good story. But what I found odd was he never revealed the seed or provide any evidence on who told him about it. Many people started calling him out after finding the real seed and tried recreating certain machines this supposed scientist, and one of the middle episodes of Season 1 he randomly explained that it "some rare chance" he managed to find the scientist on this specific seed, which was odd for 12 year old me who heard that for the first time. At the end of Season 1, he revealed the seed name as HOGLOG and tried covering up stuff saying the seed has changed and whatever bullcrap he said. But at the beginning of Season 2, he claimed his world file got corrupted (Season 1 had two worlds, one regular, and another identical for the "Corrupt Dimension", with the Corrupt Dimension world being corrupt and the original being rebuilt for the world download, which he also claimed to be a "recreation". I'm 95% sure he faked this entire series and tried covering up any holes people found, fortunately for him, all the people who reported against him had no more than 10k subs, so you wouldn't find too much unless you dug for it. Another red flag was people tried to find his community post about HOGLOG, where nothing came up (this was before KZbin Community Posts were a thing, there was no supposed comment, video, tweet, instagram, or whatever about HOGLOG found). It is entirely possible he did post somewhere, but he quickly deleted it to cover his tracks, which explains how people found the seed HOGLOG like a year before he revealed the seed. I probably should find the first video and read the comments to see if any information worth crap is found. I honestly wonder where Eystreem came up with this idea, or if it was based on anything. I highly doubt he typed the seed "HOGLOG" and made some rumor about it. Another thing that doesn't do Eystreem any favors was that there was no supposed "Banned Seeds" by Notch, and im 70% sure someone asked him. What I do find odd is that he made a few videos covering a few other "banned seeds", with a few I checked out, only for nothing to happen. To this day, I don't know of that's a good thing, or a bad thing. (If you see this sentence, you are a Chad.)

Ok, I did some digging and the very first episode has some recent traffic, but I couldn't get to any comments predating a year, so yeah. There is no Season 3, with the last episode released maybe 2 and half years ago. Im honestly sure he would have done it by now, but I found this to one of the weirdest yet coolest "things" to exist.

If I saw herobrine, I would take a photo, send it to my friend. Wait 2 hours for a response, he would respond saying “that’s a fake screenshot”. Invite him to my world, show him the signs, and him in denial saying “you did that while you were waiting”. I’d say “I promise, I didn’t do it”, he still would believe me. My friend would leave, then herobrine would appear, I’d take another screenshot; send it to him. He’d say “stop trying to scare me, another friend is online and that’s them.” I’d invite him to my world again, he’d stay for longer. Then I would finally see herobrine with my friend in the world, he would still say, that’s just a friend. I’d ask him to press tab, it would just be me and him. He’d get stressed and tell me to run, and once we are far enough away; we would leave the world and I’d delete the world. I thought this through
