Great movie, but the actual event was even greater. Not just because of the sport, but what it meant to us as a country. Things were pretty bleak back then. Rampant inflation, our people held hostage in Iran, the building Soviet threat and just a general malaise throughout the land. But this one game, this one team of kids, started to turn it around. It gave Americans hope, something we sorely needed back then.

Yep -- very true. Most amazing part was the way we had to keep coming back from each Soviet goal. Most upsets happen when the dog leads end to end. Perfectly said, Guardian. As a country, we were at about our lowest. That was way more than a hockey win. That energized us as a nation. Raised spirits. Made us proud to be Americans. There was no way they should come away with the gold and they did. There are lots of guys that if you give them an excuse to lose they will take it and accept the outcome. There was no gold medal game. It was a round robin tournament so there was only games based on ground series seedings. Soviets-USA was A1-B2, and Sweden - Finland was B1-A2. Last day it was A2-B2, Finland-USA and A1-B1, Soviets-Sweden. Schedule was done in advance so there was no way knowing which teams would qualify for medal round and who were eliminated. The final four games schedules was known only after ground pool games were finished.

@KevAng0393 жыл бұрын
That was a difference maker in the game. Johnson not giving up on the dump in shot at the end of the 1st stunned the Soviets and possibly the 2nd biggest mistake only behind pulling Tretiak was not pulling the goalie at the end to get to overtime. Tikonov didn’t know how to play being down and figured they’d just tie it up at some point when the Americans got tired but as we know, the Americans never got gassed and the Soviets were just absolutely done and could barely do anything.

@@pietrm1 they lost. How was that the right move? You have one of the best goalies of all time in your net and as a coach you make an emotional decision. The mistakes were made and taking Tretiak didn't fix them. If anything he would've been even more locked in for the rest of the game. Would you take Gretzky out for a few mistakes? Absolutely not. The Soviets hadn't been tested in a long time and their coach panicked. He chose a scapegoat and showed his players that everyone on the team could get guillotined. That coach was hated by his players (as they mentioned in that team's documentary) and other coaches were just as successful. He just managed the politics of the Soviet Union better and had friends in high places.

I was 11 years old. Lived in Tampa Florida. Barely knew what Hockey was. Did not even know the game was being played. (I thought it was being played later in the evening) But, I do remember watching a re run of Star Trek on local station when they interrupted, mid scene, of Matt Decker flying a shuttle craft into the mouth of the Doomsday Machine, to announce that Team USA had just defeated the Soviet Union in Olympic Ice Hockey. I did not know all the background behind Hockey History, or how many years in a row, the Soviets had one Olympic Gold. But, I knew about the Soviet Union and Olympic Competition. I had watched many Olympic Competitions that seemed 'rigged' in favor of the Soviet's. I felt there was something special and extraordinary about this moment. I started yelling this out to the entire house. My Dad came out of the Kitchen and did not believe what I was saying. He had not seen the report. But, he understood enough about this matchup to realize I was most likely mistaken. My Mom even chimed in on this. Neither believed me. But, I kept insisting, and it caught their interest enough to call the local TV Station and ask. Neither were Hockey Fans. We were all Floridians. (Dad was from WVA, but had been here since his late teens) We were also a fiercely Patriotic Family. And we always watched the Olympics together back then. We had planned to watch the game when it was delayed broadcast at 8pm that evening. (and we did). But, despite not knowing much about Hockey back then, we all realized, this was something special.
