A really great video, worth the watch. Might add that this period coincided with a dark moment in Kenya's athletic management team history. Some athletes retired in frustration and others relocated to other countries. Needless to say, if Bernand Lagat hadn't gone to U.S. ,he would have been forgotten an year or two later. The depth of Kenyan talent is deep. That's why most athlete's spans are very short unless one is too good or relocates to other countries.

To simply put it, Kenyan officials are corrupt. Noah Ng'eny's talent is unmatched in kenya ♥ The best middle distance run of all time.
@freedomm2 жыл бұрын
There was no corruption involved there. Athletics Kenya was quite explicit that athletes wanting to compete at the world championships should return to camp in Kenya and Noah Ngeny's agent, at the time in power struggle with AK over control of Kenyan athletes instructed him to ignore the call and stay in the UK, so AK (rightly in my opinion) dropped him. The thing about Kenya, no athlete gets special treatment. Remember Daniel Komen missed the Olympics in his strongest year, 1996 after he lost the Kenyan trials. Most other countries would've found a way to get such a gifted athlete in the team, but not Kenya.
@MrBond-km7dq2 жыл бұрын
@@freedomm it's this bully attitude and in-house battling that has lost great talent to Bahrain and other countries. Uganda gives their athletes the opportunity to train anywhere,,, just watch Uganda eat kenya's lunch on track. Have you seen who won steeplechase at world's this year? @@MrBond-km7dq None of the talent that switches Bahrain, Qatar and other countries ever leaves Kenya to live and train in their new countries so your point is irrelevant. And the depth in Kenya is such that they can provide global medalists for Bahrain, Qatar, Turkey, Kazakhstan and even the USA and still be competitive. There's grand total of two Ugandan athletes worth talking about versus hundreds and hundreds of Kenyans. The fact is: Noah Ngeny's agent used him as a pawn in a power play against the Kenyan federation and lost, not only costing his athlete, but made things harder for other foreign agents.

I'm a Kiwi but acknowledge great talent from wherever it comes) He lost a mile race when he was about 15 but from then on was NEVER BEATEN at one Mile nor 1500m. Set the world record in the 1500m when winning gold at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. This was back in the amateur days and he needed to earn a living, so retired undefeated and went to University. I think he was 23. The whole world hoped for the big clash with him and Peter Snell from New Zealand but, sadly, it never took place after each won Gold at 1960 Olympics. Snell 800m, Elliot 1500m..
