The determination and perseverance of the teacher is prime discipline. The getting up and setting them back down repeatedly and making them pick up after themselves is something I have done firsthand with my son and it is so tiring but it pays off in the end. Kids are smart, they just need a firm hand to guide them in the right direction.

But as this child is blind and deaf, why can't she eat with her hands? Just cause it's "proper"? She can't feel the food with a utensil. Someone has to physically handle her like a doll so she would know where the food was and put it in her mouth. Eating with her hands gives her the ability to eat the food on her own by feeling it.
@lockycay
@lockycay 2 ай бұрын
@ yeah okay, she could feel where the food is with the utensil. Most blind people don’t eat with their hands. She just had to learn the same way the rest of us did even with her disabilities. Her teacher treated her like a normal person and taught her etiquette and language. Helen Keller was a real person this was her story.
@kpoppy9635
@kpoppy9635 2 ай бұрын
@lockycay how do you feel it with the utensil? You can't feel it. Put on a blindfold and try to put food in your mouth using a spoon without sight and without touching the food with your hands. And no one can tell you where it is (as she can't hear either.) Its not "as the rest of us" cause we are born with sight and hearing and most of us are taught to handle a spoon in infancy...because we have those senses that she's missing. I don't believe she used utensils without assistance. I dont get why people insist on making it harder for people with disabilities just cause it's a social norm. As long as she isn't throwing food around or stepping on it, I think its fine for her to eat with her hands if that's easier for her. Just make sure she washes her hands after.
@lockycay
@lockycay 2 ай бұрын
@@kpoppy9635 you clearly have never worked with disabled people. They want to be treated equally. You literally haven’t the slightest idea what you’re talking about. You would rather coddle someone with disabilities rather than help them learn. And you think Helen Keller or any blind person for that matter could never learn how to eat with proper utensils. Well she did, as well as read, write and speak. Her teacher treated her as an equal and Helen Keller loved and respected her until the day she died. For f**** sake if you knew anything about Keller you would know that. Quit wasting my time and go watch the damn movie for yourself. It will prove you wrong before you’ve finished it.

@alsinakiria

Not scary if it's all you've ever known. People who are born deaf sometimes refuse implants that allow them to hear because they find hearing to be overwhelming and a distraction. I myself was born legally blind. The idea of being able to see floors and walls was completely foreign to me. The first time I could see I refused to walk. I couldn't comprehend walking on a surface I could see. My mom had to carry me out of the optometrists' office because I just couldn't process it all. People who are completely blind perceive the world in a slight different way but they aren't scared. It's all they've ever known. They simply can't imagine a world of sight. I myself have a chance of randomly waking up blind. It is a reality that I live with every day. I can actually drive now but there's always the chance that I could wake up one morning and it's all gone. That scares me because I don't really remember being a blind child. Learning how to navigation a completely different world is the scary thing. Not a high chance though, luckily for me.

@@jennyblue42 you've definitely been "normal" you're whole life. You're right that you can't imagine it but people who are deaf and or blind can't imagine living in a world where these things exist. Around the 2:48 mark- little Helen was feeling out the food with her feet to understand where she was exactly. She knew the dishes of food by smell. Thus where the end of the table would be, where it would be open enough to TEST her _miracle worker_ , with a "Trust Fall". Something I dont remember from the other two movies, maybe something unique to this one. Well done.

People shouldn't compare this version to the 1962 version. This one was in color, it was for a new generation of children and family, it was more subtle and age-appropriate. I'm a 90s kid and grew up with this version. Both were for different audiences. It really taught me about Helen Keller and her life. I really think Alison Elliott did great playing Annie Sullivan. She has the Victorian-era look, too

The Greek Pianist That wasn’t Alison Elliott, that was Patty Duke herself. She played as Helen Keller in the 1962 version and now in this TV movie she plays as Anne Sullivan,. She won an Oscar for her performance in the 1962 version of The Miracle Worker and she won an Emmy award for her performance as Anne in the 1979 TV movie version. Isn’t that great? She won awards for playing as both characters.

This girl has clearly been thinking more about really playing someone who's blind, deaf and mute. You can tell how young as she is, she already was a professional actress. Melissa Gilbert had less acting professionalism, but way more experience. And of course Patty Duke was a natural talent. So they all were great.

The music in this is gorgeous. So wonderfully expressive, like the score of a silent film. I love it. Also, I know I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this, but Hallie Eisenberg was a much better Helen than Patty Duke, and I say this as someone who is visually impaired myself. Duke's performance, while I'm sure it was groundbreaking for its time, now comes across as someone pretending at not being able to see and hear. Eisenberg, meanwhile, seems to be truly embodying what it would be like to be blind and deaf. Her gestures are much more natural, not as over-the-top and mugging for the camera as Duke's (yes, I know the '62 film was heavily based on the stage show, which requires different, broader acting for the people in the back).

It's interesting how she matches her slaps and such. I would normally believe this is wrong but you can see that it is almost a from of showing her respect in that she does not baby her or treat her as a child that is beneath her but rather as an equal. She is meeting her where she is at and validating her resistance by fighting back accordingly rather than playing a punishment game. She does not think she is too good for Helen but rather makes it clear she is her match. Very interesting.

@NoriMori1992

Agreed. In 99.9% of cases I'm completely against corporal punishment, but Helen had _never_ been shown that her behaviour hurts people, and she had never been told her behaviour was wrong, and at this juncture it's not like she can be told in words. I also totally agree about the respect thing. Annie respects her enough to actually communicate with her in the only way she can understand, instead of not bothering just because she can't understand words.

This is a wonderfully moving film. I know this scene wasn't intentionally funny but I involuntarily laughed at the slapping part. I just thought that the girl must be pretty strong to make someone's head fly back like that when slapping.That teacher should learn to block... But then I realized how scary it must've been for the girl to not see or hear anything and yet be grabbed and restrained like that.

Helen Keller was 6, and a sturdy strong little girl. Annie Sullivan was short. The fights were epic as Annie began to train her. What you saw in Patty Duke's performance was Helen's blazing intelligence trying to break through. The reality of life in the South in the early 1870s (when Annie started her work) was poor, dilapidated for most who had lost the work hands for home and plantations and farms that had limited labor. Helen's family had few servants and lived modestly in a small town. The costumes and setting were a little much for the reality of it.

The hitting back is interesting, because normally you would not want to lose control and hit children as a response to being hit. It would teach them that the bigger person is justified in hitting, and not thinking that hitting is wrong. However, in this instance, the typical responses that would show the child hitting is wrong aren't available. For example, in toddler years, when a child hits you, they can look at your face and see that you are unhappy; you can tell them "ouch", you can even feign sadness to help the child understand that other people feel pain, too. With Helen, she hit her exactly the same way that Helen hits to help her make the connection that othet people have emotions and feelings of pain like her.
