Edey's college coach, Matt Painter, confidently said in an interview that Edey would have gotten a guaranteed contract if he stayed in the draft after his junior season, despite those "late 2nd round" draft projections. Painter is one of the most honest and straight shooting college coaches out there. He wouldn't have just said that if he didn't have a legitimate reason to believe it.

4 weeks later, but you can thank his time in baseball and hockey for that. In baseball, you have to run the right way if you want to have a chance at even making it to first base, even at a high school level. Hockey's even better for running in that aspect; doing it wrong ends in you falling on your face. To even make it to that level, you have to be far more coordinated than the average person, and as long as you're active that coordination never leaves you.

Edy is a victim of the NBA's over shift to the 3 offensively. that combined with scouts not giving him credit for being relatively new to basketball and thus having a higher ceiling than other Bigs that had been playing. Edy wasn't a one and done type because he didn't start playing until like his sophomore year of high school, so he had to develop more in college as a basketball player. Kind of like Tim Duncan switching from swimming to basketball as a teenager then doing 4 years of increasing his statistical output in college. and when you play 4 years of college ball you tend to fall out of the lottery, because teams feel like you're basically done developing...him and Knecht had a similar fall in the draft, and I thought both would be good because Knecht is new to his 6'5 size and Edy is new to basketball. If Knecht is a 6'5 freshman in college instead of 6'3, he's 1 and done. If Edy had played basketball his whole life coming into college, he would have been 1 and done too.

Purdue Fans knew somethings the "experts" overlooked. Edey was WAY more athletic than the experts gave credit for. Edey started playing basketball about 6 years ago. Most NBA players are in the third grade when they are playing their 6th year of basketball. Edey was overlooked coming into college as well, and came in behind an all Big Ten center, yet earned immediate playing time and took over from the All Star as starter because of his work ethic. Not many players work as hard. Because Edey didn't grow up as a pampered super star, he's super humble and willing to do whatever the organization asks. He's not going to demand anything, minutes, points, starting, nothing. He will start, he will come off the bench. He will learn new skills. He missed ZERO hours to injury in college, so these ankle things are probably a fluke. He played 40 minutes during Purdue run to the National Championship game, his cardio is amazing. He's already shown he'll be able to be a competent three point shooter, despite shooting a grand total of 2 three point attempts in college ( finishing with an AMAZING 50 % from 3😂). Although he isn't as quick as some of the flashes in the NBA, he is MUCH faster than most people realized but ONE "Edey Stride " is worth about 3 normal NBA player steps. This guy makes 7 footers look tiny, I hope everyone gets to see him in person someday. His game absolutely positively will translate. The question is, how high is his ceiling? IMHO the ceiling is All Star and Olympian. The fabulous players surrounding Edey on the Grizzlies only make his successful transition to the big time much easier than it could have been. I say, sit back and enjoy the ride, and maybe put in a small futures bet on the Grizzlies winning it all.

Rik Smits. The man started playing basketball as late as possible. He is now basically the best center in Indiana Pacers history. Why? Because you can teach a tall person how to play baskteball, and the less he knows, the more you can teach him. But you can't teach a short person to be tall.

I feel like I remember Edey seeming like he had the potential to be a player like this while he was in college but the system Purdue was running basically didn't need him to utilize more of his mobility. I feel like you could tell that Edey had more than just a big man post game but he was just rarely ever put in a situation to further develop or showcase that.

I’m sure that painter had something in place where Edie wouldn’t contest a lot of shots down low just so he didn’t pick up fouls because he was more needed on office which is why he’s picking up more fouls now in the NBA because he’s not as needed and they’ve released him as far as that goes

While true. What's more important than height is mobility especially in the NBA. A big that can defend the rim very well but struggles to move laterally will get exploited. What's the use of being a great shotblocker when you can't even stay in the paint. As teams will force you to move your feet and pull you out the paint.

IMO The biggest assets Edey has , is that even though he is 7ft4 he is proportional , and his very coordinated and seems to understand that he can't get too heavy and has already done work on that , unlike Zion or Shaq lol . With Wemby , my first opinion of him was he looked brittle , but in the year he has been in the league his has worked his arse off to increase his size and to take care of his flexibility. I had the same opinion with Chet as i did with Wemby , unfortunately I don't think that Che is going to be able to change much with his body , and he is now out with a hip fracture because he has no meat to protect those bones when they hit that wood floor

i'm a spurs fan and watched the ncaa finals to have a look at stephon castle. while uconn won the game, it was quite showing that edey was the player doing the most in the game. basically carrying purdue the whole game until he couldn't anymore. meanwhile, castle didn't even break a sweat because uconn was much more evenly spread in terms of talent. after watching the game, i was quite sure that edey was correctly picked at the end of the lottery. i didn't know that media would say he's not even worth a second round pick. geez. i honestly think that a lot of nba scouts aren't doing their jobs right. normally i don't say this because i've grown out of the 'arm chair coach' phase of watching sports long ago. but between brunson, edey and luka, i honestly feel that way. these guys has played for multiple years against high competition, producing multiple years of results as their teams' best player. what more do you want to see from a player? just because they don't have super high athletism, or are a couple years older that you won't be picking them? basketball is a skill sport. them coming into the league with high skill means that you are not wasting time to teach them about stuff. but nba scouts still routinely choose players who are a couple of years younger, thinking they can realize the players natural talents, while the teams fail to give the players the chance to learn and play simultaneously. isn't it basic logic that the dangerous gamble should be choosing a player who has not played many games, but has out of the world numbers? talking about teams though, edey might not have gotten such praises if he was drafted by another team. grizzies are almost the perfect fit for edey. they have a hole on their roster that edey filled, but they don't need him to do much, while he can still produce enough for them to let him play. not a lot of teams with a hole in their roster can afford a rookie a chance to do so.

I still don’t think his ceiling is much higher than what we see, he has proven me wrong in college (didn’t think he could take them as far as he did in the tournament) and now the NBA, and I’m sure he could do it again if I’m honest. Likable guy, I hope he does to be honest.

Two things that always impressed me about Edey: his constant movement, setting picks and positioning himself in the lane, and his excellent free-throw stroke. Lots of seven-footers are terrible free-throw shooters, but not Zach. And he shot a LOT of free throws, often fouling out two or three players who tried to guard him!

As a Spurs fan, I was worried when the Grizzlies picked up Edey. Sure, he may not have as many tools as Wemby, but I feel he'll give Wemby some headaches whenever the Spurs play the Grizzlies. Nice to see a low post big doing alright in the modern NBA regardless.

He's not quite that type of shot blocker yet. Clingan is a better shot blocker and was drafted before him. But we'll see if he can develop that side of his game to be an elite blocker. Something people aren't talking about is his shooting. In his 4 year college career he attempted two 3's, both in his final season. Now, in the NBA, he's already shot 10 of them and made.. SIX of them. He's shooting 60% from 3. His free throw percentage has also dramatically improved from his first stretch of games to his last. I guarantee you he will have a 3pt shot like brook lopez but likely better. This is the development you see with players who started playing basketball late and who have high athletic potential (dude was playing hockey and baseball at the same time and was nationally ranked in both).

@@niki8280 I think it was more a bet on the Timberwolves falling apart and eventually losing Ant based on the chaos with their ownership. Hell maybe even put the Spurs in a position to trade for him by giving Minnesota control of their drafts back so they can properly tank. Keldon's not gonna get another big money contract so he's no worry and Wemby won't be eligible for significant money until 27-28 at the earliest. No idea what kind of money Sochan will be able to pull in 26-27 when he's eligible for his first big extension.

One of the main reasons why people doubt Edey is because of the favoritism shown to him in terms of fouls. The Big 10 ref crew had no idea on how to ref games with Edey in them and it basically became the wild west and he was able to get away with a lot and also draw insane foul and free throw totals which allowed him to heavily inflate his stats. As soon as they played in the Tournament or out of conference games, his foul numbers skyrocketed and he wasn't drawing as many fouls for free throws

According to ChatGPT -- which confirmed my own beliefs 😀... What is the bias called when comparing an NBA player only to the past and ignoring his actual current and potential abilities? Answer: This bias is often referred to as anchoring bias or status quo bias. Anchoring Bias: This occurs when someone fixates on initial information (e.g., past performance) and fails to adjust their assessment adequately based on new or current information. In this case, the player’s past performance overly influences how they are judged, rather than considering their current abilities and potential growth. Status Quo Bias: This reflects a preference for the current or historical state of things, resisting change or reevaluation, which could result in ignoring the player's evolution or potential. Both biases could lead to undervaluing or overvaluing a player's true abilities.

I was a freshman at Purdue the same year as Edey he was honestly awful as a freshman. Came back his sophomore season and played a solid contributing role under all big 101 teamer Trevion Williams. His development from sophomore to junior year and then again the jump from junior to senior proved everything to me he has only been paying competitive basketball since his junior year of high school, and if he continues to develop, we will remember him as one of the best NBA centers of all time.

Multi sport players translate because it is about being competitive and a love to win, it's about the game, after "the bag" was introduced players stopped wanting to play for the game. They played for money and fame, no one really has heart anymore. Kobe was part of a dying breed of players who loved the game, this modern era has no heart and that's what it truly misses.

I think the reason successful college stars struggle in the NBA is their mentality. They get intimidated, back down, and don’t live up to their potential. I don’t believe it’s usually because their talent was evaluated wrongly.
