The casualness with which he opened up one of those boxes when it's believed that an exploding cigar box killed the victim (who's to say that there weren't multiple exploding cigar boxes, to catch him wherever), and the swiftness of his ability to come up with a list of culprits would have put him high on my list of suspects, too

Columbo missed a key question. I would've asked "what movie was it? I haven't seen a movie in a long time and was thinking of seeing one" he could've caught her in a lie. 😅

He could have also confirmed that the cleaning lady indeed handed her the cigar case.
@Maninawig
@Maninawig 2 жыл бұрын
Columbo is high in insight and read the young lady. He asked the bare minimum questions and even directed his more pointed Intel towards the nefew because he could see how emotional she was. Unlike the killer, he was doing his best to keep her in a driven state: had she gotten more upset she might have closed up, or had she gotten too relax she might be forgetful. Both of those questions would have made her feel like he was accusing her and lead her to close up and possibly hit him.
@polishfinnish3066
@polishfinnish3066 2 жыл бұрын
@@Maninawig Actually my question would've been a natural follow up designed to ease into the question. But the killer redirected the nature of the questioning before Colombo could ask, a move that makes him more suspicious. Colombo could've asked her later. If he asked what movie there were 2 tests he could've done independently after her answer; 1) what theaters were showing the movie? He could've just followed up once again with what one did she go to. 2) what times were they being shown? Pretty much her delayed response for what movie she saw yesterday would hint she didn't actually see one or is hiding something. If there is no showing for that movie or it's not out it would've been a lie. But he could ask further to get more information; " I've been meaning to see that movie but the times don't work for my schedule, could you spoil the ending for me?" At that point he would have better odds to know if she's lying. 1) she gets the ending correct 2) Colombo sees the movie and it doesn't match 3) she could lie further and say I don't remember/ I wasn't watching the movie. Then he would ask why? Then she would say she was on a date but why didn't she say that before? (This question would lead to more doubt about her story) 4) she could correct her statement and say I left early because I wasn't feeling too well / wasn't enjoying the movie This line of questioning would highlight the delay to her responses which can be verified when he saw the movie. But she could wiggle out if she's a fast thinker. But the answers would point to a lie or a meeting with someone she wants to cover up. If he pressed her he would've found out she was on a date with the suspected killer where he could've asked more questions about the killers actions that night and gotten more details. Like was he looking at the watch for long periods of time/ frequently. I doubt she would slap him because these are non intimate interactions and he's not outright accusing her.
@Maninawig
@Maninawig 2 жыл бұрын
@@polishfinnish3066 I understand your point and it is actually a trick Columbo does quite often. From asking where someone gets their suit as he has a dance to go to, to anecdotes about his wife. So the question becomes "why didn't he ask?" And the answer is because that line of questioning only works when the person is in a responsive state. It requires you to maintain control of the conversation, and between her defensiveness and the killer's intrusion, a wrong question like "are you sure" (which is how the question of what movie would be turned) would have been turned into an accusation of "you think cause I handle the cigars, I killed my boss?" There is also the fact that she might have seen a movie with the killer and used that to wiggle out, which also brings up a lawyer saying "never ask your witness a question of which you don't know the answer." Also, her affair was supposed to be a secret so there is moral ambiguity at play, which tends to make people thinking their moral sins will be treated like legal sins. In other words, her guilt will make her think the cop thinks she is lying to cover up her ties to the murder. However, there was another convo going on that Columbo was entertaining: body language. I double checked and when he asked where she was, subconsciously she stole a glance towards the killer answering "with him." When she was confused or trying to validate herself, she would do the same seeking apoval. Yet she kept the timidness of innocence. As the killer was already suspected by Columbo, this added up to "he used this girl as a scandalous alibi so that he can have a trump card if ever he was caught." So knowing that figuring how the bomb got into the car became the only question to ask.

Roddys outfits in this episode are outrageous. Those pants sure are a tight fit. Although, when I think about it, it seems perfectly consistent with his personality. In the first part of the episode he is all easy-going and somewhat wild and crazy. When he takes over the murdered mans duties he totally changes his appearence. He goes totally insane in the tram in the very end though.

Dawn of the Dad Well, maybe you are right. It just seems to me that Roger (Roddy) is a megolamaniac with no regards to other peoples feelings. Columbos and Logans reaction to Rogers laughter is that of disgust and repulsion imo. They finally see Roger as the very sick man he is.
