One of the best scenes from the movie 'The Mission' (Palme d'Or '1986') with Robert De Nero, Jeremy Irons & Liam Neeson in breathtaking interpretations ... With the music of Ennio Morricone!
A sumptuous, grandiose music that sets a sublime setting for this wild jungle, one of his most beautiful soundtracks. It also brings immense joy by what his characters manage to accomplish.
Just read the smiles on the faces of the Indians and this fragile harmony that will hold good until the end, despite the evil, inexorable approaching.
Just admire this sublime conversion of Robert de Niro - what an incredible actor! monstrous and bloodthirsty trader who will redeem himself by climbing this steep and slippery cliff and weighted by his armor that symbolize his sins and fall into the arms of the Indians he had so many martyrs.
And those Indians who laugh to see him cry, and who absolve him, like saints blessed by God, who take him in their arms, who kiss him, rock him, cajole him like one of theirs, forgive him all , even the worst horrors.
And this touch of hope is enough to clear the film of all expectations ...
A masterpiece on all levels !!!

Arguably the most powerful scene of forgiveness ever captured on film. The man who attacked and captured men for enslavement being forgiven by the tribe he hurt. The embrace he receives overwhelms him, as he knows he doesn't deserve it. By their acceptance of him, he is no longer their enemy, but is their friend. A beautiful picture of the gospel.

I think it also serves a symbolic reflection as the slaves were chained and roped by him, while the Guarani free him of the rope. Also the moment he killed his brother escalated as another man was mistaken for laughing at him, now the Guarani laugh to show him reconciliation. Outstanding script writing ✨

@Lukas G. What you say is correct...there is something greater, full of love and joy!! Not only is there a God, but he deigned to put himself in human form, Jesus, so that He might live among us. I'm so excited at your understanding that "there is something more." First step!! Are there any people in your life that are believers? Someone here said, don't rely on your feelings, use your mind instead. Faith is both! Here on youtube are two outstanding men of both degreed intellect and deep love for God. Dallas Willard (now deceased) was/is a philosopher, minister and writer. His lessons and talks are deep and will strike a resonant chord in you. John Lennox, a Scottish physicist, speaks well for the truth of Christ. Also, you might enjoy, and be thrilled inwardly, to the music of Michael W. Smith. I especially like his first album from the beginning of his career. kzbin.info/aero/PLbcE2oLnrwBZcJnx9UJ2s-MANYEbu8a4X instrumentals...God reaches His children (us) in many different ways. He is the ultimate good Father, unlike the terrible ones so many of us have had on earth. God is present now, right next to you. That's a miracle worth consideration. He will hear your voice of seeking, if you dare ask. And, respond, of course, in many different ways. A voice inside you, a friend, something notable around you, in the Bible, etc. You'd be surprised how many people find a "relationship" with God by reading the Bible. His Holy Spirit will respond to you whenever you seek Him. One does not need to believe before asking God to reveal Himself to you...just seek in earnest. He will accept you the way you are...don't wait a day longer.👍❤ I also really like the music of Steven Curtis Chapman. I find energy and inspiration by reading biographies and hearing of some tragic events in their lives ... which, with the grace of God, they weather and keep on living. Their interviews are on KZbin as well. I hope to hear good news from you!! I believe youtube might institute a way listeners may contact other listeners. With all due respect, messrtwinky. You can always contact me on Facebook, under "Marcy Stemm." "Mere Christianity" is a wonderful book written by an atheist-turned-Christian. Addresses the intellect first. Ya' know, buddy, you now have many Christians praying for you --- having read your excellent comment.

One of the most moving and powerful scenes the film industry ever produced, in my judgment (I've seen a few movies in my 74 years). Hollywood needs to reconsider films such as these that packed such emotional punch and gave examples of values and sacrifice and honor---and try to figure out how to make some more like it.

It's truly a great movie and a genuine "Epic" as good as anything produced by the likes of David Lean and Stanley Kubrick. It was a big risk putting two powerhouses like Jeremy Irons and Robert Deniro in the same movie, but it paid off. Both of them are at their peak playing difficult roles and do a superb job. The role that Irons plays as the priest is probably the harder one, and that of the conquistador played by Deniro is probably the more colorful one - a transformative piece with Mendes having killed his brother and seeking redemption, only to be saved by the tribe he once hunted and enslaved. A great, great movie. And the role of of Morricone's music should not be understated either - it elevates a great movie to that of the sublime.

This glorious scene gives me chills every time I watch it. It is about an essential question of life: How does a man cope with overbearing guilt? Also look at Father Gabriel here. He will not lift a finger to help Mendoza carry his burden, but he watches him closely and won't let him fall. He really cares for Mendoza like a wise father, although he is probably the younger one of those two (actually, Irons is five years younger than de Niro). Also nice to see Liam Neeson in a minor role a couple of years before he rose to stardom.

One of the most powerful scenes in all of movies. I saw this in the theater. And this has stayed with me so powerfully for 33 years. It is as powerful today as it was when I first saw it. It is perfect, not just the performance but the lesson . We carry with us the burden of sin and we do not know how we punish ourselves for that weight. In this instance he chose to carry the weight and the punishment for the sin of killing his brother. And then after he had punished himself enough he allowed the weight of that sin to be relieved from him. And the relief and self-forgiveness was wonderfully powerful.

And what was really touching is that the very people who Mendoza had terrorized as a slave trader, the Guarani, forgave his sins. I think Mendoza was willing to accept execution at the hands of the Guarani. Instead, they symbolically cut his throat and then cut the rope carrying his armor and weapons. The old Mendoza died and he was reborn.

I have always wondered at the pastors and ,one priest, have actually appeared on public T.V. and You Tube --- and boasted, as well as itemized their multiple transgressions their personal sins, as well as the many crimes which they committed and laws which they broke, before coming to a personal relationship with Jesus, over an institutionalized knowledge and understanding of Christianity and morality, which they were raised with. I have often wondered why there never seemed to be a sense of sorrow over their transgressions, no personal repentance and humility, in the light of the freeing forgiveness of God, by the sacrifice on the Cross of our precious Savior and Lord. This scene truly illustrates this perfectly, as well as his commitment to these natives and his vocation. I have never gone into the things that I was involved in, as well as my multiple transgressions and sins, unless the Holy Spirit has moved me to share this information, one on one, with one person, alone, whom the Holy Spirit has impressed upon me, is caught up in secret sin or involved in great transgressions, and needs to be freed. Few could have ever know my personal pain, sorrow, helplessness, and hopelessness which I carried inside, as well as the repentance I experienced, and the powerful inner healing and transformation I experienced, when I was forgiven. I will always say, " Who am I , to argue against the forgiveness of God, at the great cost it took, and the grace that He has given me to be His disciple and servant? " This is why this movie is one the greatest movies.

@Tracchofyre You are free to your own disrespectful, uneloquent criticisms of individuals' personal inner spiritual journeys and inner transformations. You actually write about human having " giant souls capable of layers and nuance, full of strength, compassion, , but also horror That is in itself ( is) cause for celebration and awe." Other than a distaste for highly organized religious institutions which regulate and judge, you seem to be writing about an belief in the existance of human souls. Scientists postulate that there are ten dimensions to the universe. That is actually mentioned in the sacred Vedas of the Hindu religion and also in ancient Jewish texts of the Kabbalah. Even Hindus believe that the universe came into being by the utterance of a sound. The more scientists look into the structure of DNA, and other discoveries, they are starting to believe that there was an actual Designer. Sorrow of conscience is actually necessary for repentance and transformation in any spiritual journey, and is mentioned in every .religion. I have many friends of other faiths and alternate lifestyles. I don't criticize others of my own faith or of others' faith, or alternate lifestyles, unless they hurt others, wound others, and victimize others in any way. Have an insightful day.

DEP.

One of thee most pivotal moments in cinematic history. All emotions experienced in a mere few minutes; hate, love, acceptance, fear, joy, despair, loss, forgiveness and more as defined by each viewer. DeNiro's acting here is amazing as always. You can see his face feel many of these emotions. Only when we let go of our worldly possessions can we really begin to feel God's grace. How Maestro Morricone can create such musical masterpieces is beyond the talents of mere mortals. This piece highlights every single instrument in the orchestra and voice singing out as harmoniously as humanly possible. I cannot imagine how complex the score sheet must be and with Morricone conducting this. Truly amazing

A broken man was climbing the water fall, broken in his heart after killing his brother on a jealous attack. The man who was doing penitance, who prefer dying before releasing his load... The same weapons which he used to fight and enslave these natives, the same weapons that killed his brother... He doesn't even try to defender himself against the native warrior, so when he received the forgiveness of the tribe while they released him from the load of his sins... he can not help himself and burst into tears ... He understood he has been given a second chance, he's still suffering all his losses, but he has been forgiven and is free to live again. Beautiful scene, marvelous music...all together a master piece.

This scene made me weep. when I saw it fresh, way back in 1986... when I was but 20 years old. It still impacts me, to this day, at 53. Seriously, I am weeping like you wouldn't believe. This man, who has just spent all these hours and days, dragging the remnants of his past - those things which his society said, "You are a Man,"... He dragged all of that useless baggage with him, only to be freed of it at the very end of his trek... If this scene doesn't hit you, you have never been in "that place" where it needs to hit you. I am not sure if I envy you, or pity you.

Mine too I had forgotten it somewhat but just starting the Ignatian inspired Forty Weeks journey I remembered and came to watch. My life and situations in it recently led me in a way, not as outwardly emotional but inwardly as profound as this scene. In trying to explain it to someone without wanting to sound new agey or like a 'Jesus freak' I sent them the link to this. It's the best summation of my feelings around the sort of transformative insight I was given to my life.

That's fine, however "TIME" as a noun is inherently plural - so adding an "s" is grammatically improper ("of all time" = "time" being the plural noun and "all" representing the placement of a thing as its plural pronoun). The addition of an "s" implies it is an adjective modifer helping to discribe multiple seperate periods delineated in their own nouns ("of all times of peace and struggle" = "peace" and "struggle" being the placeable nouns). Don't get offended, get amended. 👍
