Drag Race has a history of expecting more from alternative queens, and Charity Kase on Drag Race UK3 is no exception. In one of the most blatantly unfair treatments of a queen in the competition in years, I thought now would be a good time to discuss her run, some of the unfair expectations and comments from the judges, and break down episode-by-episode the Mistreatment of Charity Kase.
What are your thoughts? Comment below what you think was the most unfair moment with Charity this season!

Why are the “ quirky “ queens always told to switch their makeup up but the beauty girls who do the same mug never get told that
@murcymurc6573
@murcymurc6573 3 жыл бұрын
I dont think charity was ever told to switch up her makeup in the same way other queens have been before. They didnt really say much abt her makeup other than its stunning and a work of art. This ep it was just saying that a different kind of makeup wouldve fit better with her outfit. Cuz theyve seen she is versatile with her makeup so i think knowing that fact is what brought the suggestion on.

Maybe because the makeup this week made no sense with the look at all 🤷🏻‍♂️ just because something is new and unexpected and edgy and different doesnt mean the queen should get a free pass in my opinion.

Scarlet-Rebo Sorry but I have to disagree, her make-up during the maxi challenge was vastly different to the runway and she has switched it up several times. Moreover there is a clear hypocricy with the judges. They never ask the “fish” queens to switch up their makeup.

@@jeffrey6625 her makeup in the Mini Challenge was the same as her runway, and the reason they never ask the queens to change is because they dont present that to the judges, they dont make it known their mug is versatile, Charity did that. the queen that they always have which is more “out of the box” in comparison to the classic supermodel/feminine persona almost always seems to be judged a lot harsher, if not unfairly. A lot of the time it feels like they’re only invited on just to get brownie points. It’s like when Victoria got on the show and ru was gushing over the fact that she was breaking boundaries, as if ru isn’t the one that is literally involved in the casting. They rarely last long.

The editing in the UK seasons isn’t allowed to be as fake/spliced and edited as the US seasons. There is some kind of legal requirement in British reality TV that it can’t tell a completely misleading story that didnt really happen. Not sure exactly, but I think it’s why the UK seasons generally feel a lot more real and raw than US seasons. Of course that doesn’t include the whack judging and riggery- that’s always going to be there.

I’m pretty sure Charity has said before that the brief for the challenge was “inspired by the spice girls” and not “impersonate the spice girls”. Charity’s look was very on the brief and they made it their own rather than taking an exact replica of a look from one of the spice girls and taking it to the main stage. I think charity was robbed of this challenge and I throughly enjoyed their take and they didn’t make it boring! This just goes on to show rupauls drag race doesn’t endorse people who have different drag perspectives than Rupaul does and they are pushed down and their potential is not seen :( but I would love to see charity on dragula or something where charity will be appreciated

Drag race is infamously known for being closed minded when it comes to different drag. As soon as I saw that Charity was on drag race I could feel that she was going to be mistreated, especially since Crystal Versace is essentially what the producers want. And for people who think “just because she does spooky things doesn’t mean she should be on dragula”. Charity hits ALL of the pillars of dragula: filth, horror and glamour.

I wish that this was made more clear as a disclaimer. I know Ru says the ultimate decisions are up to her, but I especially dislike how Michelle gives critiques like she’s being helpful and knowledgeable, when she’s really being biased and hypocritical. More queens look like each other in that they look “normal”. I wish Michelle would lay off her critiques of atypical makeup styles. I hated how Daya Betty (S14) kept getting compared to Crystal Methyd too. Most queens have more standard makeup, but if your makeup resembles 1other queen, it’s not original? And then what if Daya and Crystal created that makeup style together? Why should Daya have to change?

I have no doubt it’s a thing, but Latrice was one of the most beloved queens out there until she got that ‘entitled’ edit on AS4. Kandy, Silky, Eureka and Ginger all had bad attitudes on their seasons and their looks were pretty consistently bad (well, Eureka looked pretty good for the most part, and has really stepped her pussy up now). Silky had a comeback story like no other on AS6, so some big girls do get Rudemptions. Overall, I would say you are right, that they are judged more harshly overall, but some of the queens you brought up weren’t liked because of their attitudes (whether that’s the ‘edit’ or all on them) not solely because they’re big.

It's not like she comes out in half finished garments that are ugly, every single one of her looks is so incredibly detailed, literally no one can ever reach her level because it's so her. Everything is so thought out and meticulously planned, which is what makes her final looks being "dirty or grungy" so much better because you KNOW it's on purpose

When it came to outfit-centric challenges she was good. Her bunny outfit was the worst thing she's worn on the runway but it still was okay. But in all the other challenges she was the second worst (After Elektra in Dragaton and after Scarlett in the 2 latest episode). So she never was the worst, but considering the fact that she wasn't good at choreo, making cohesive styling choices and acting, it would be safe to say that she would not become the next drag superstar based on shock value of her outfits alone. She's a great instagram picture, but I don't see her winning drag race.

To be honest I don’t think they ever criticized her that harshly, for the spice girls runway they literally called her a walking piece of art, and in my opinion she clearly was the worst in that group after Scarlet. And in episode 5 they reiterate over and over that her outfit was spectacular but the makeup was a bit distracting. While I do think it’s unfair for alternative queens to be expected to change their drag, I also think sometimes weird queens get a pass from the fan base just because they’re weird even if they didn’t do well on the challenges.
@whomfst
@whomfst 3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. The fanbase really gives Charity free passes, not that I disagree with some of the choices like not including her in the top in episode one, but the fanbase trying to defend her makeup this week… a choice really. I think the fanbase is too used to the judges giving weird critiques to queens that when they’re finally fair to the fan favorites, the fans get mad that the judges are “overlooking” the favorites and not giving them praise. Like you said, the judges still called her a walking piece if art, if they were truly against charity they wouldnt have thrown that comment in. I agree that queens like Krystal and Scarlet are unfairly pushed but I’m not gonna sit here and cherry pick and pretend that Charity would have placed any higher than she did. It’s a competition reality show and in the end it really doesn’t matter who wins. Charity got enough exposure and is definitely a fan favorite of the season to not need the title at all.

No but you’re not getting the point. She has been in the bottom or safe for most/all challenges, even when she genuinely deserved to be in the top. Meanwhile more traditionally “pretty” queens are placed in a spot that actually matches up with the critiques they’re given. The other queens mentioned were not cooky in every challenge like Charity is. She got AMAZING critiques most of the time, and it's all up to the opinions of the individual. Personally I agree with her being safe in the first challenge, but I think Choriza should have been in the top. I also personally think Charity should have been the bottom 2 in the next episode over Vanity, and safe episode 3. Drag is an art form. There is no right or wrong decisions. I do agree that Charity wasn't treated fairly all the time, but I still don't think she was ever going to win the season, or even make it to the top 3/4. She was consistently sub-par in performance-based challenges and overall I think her looks, while interesting, were her only real asset. Even if you do alternative drag, you also have to realize that you're going on Drag Race, and that you will unfortunately need to adapt in certain areas in order to do that and succeed in challenges. Previous alt queens have done that with great success. Sharon Needles and Yvie Oddly won their seasons, and Crystal Methyd made top 3. Charity doesn't seem like the type that could adapt in that way. One more thing that I think Charity lacked was a clear storyline or connection with Ru. Part of this is the fact that UK3's cast as a whole lacks chemistry, but every successful drag race contestant needs an arc of some kind, which Charity wasn't getting. Whether that's her lack of connection with the cast/Ru, or if the producers just didn't see any potential for drama there, we'll never really know.
