Are you planning on doing an videos on the Land Pattern "Brown Bess" musket? I have a Short Land Pattern and discovered some interesting things from reading the Scottish and English manuals for them. Projectiles vary from .690 to .730 and powder weights started with the 1722 English Tower load at 75 grains of FFF, eventually evolving up to a frightening 120 grain loads in some of the Scottish manuals I have read. Not sure how much of that was for priming the pan, but still scary hot. I had to convert Drams to Grains, and there may be something lost in translation there. When actually shooting, the stout powder loads produce better accuracy, which is my theory on why the load evolved upwards and the ball evolved downwards to .690 for increased muzzle velocity to achieve a higher point blank range and ease of ramming after the bore became fowled. Later manuals said that hits were expected by trained British Infantry at 75 yards. My 100 grain FFF load behind a .730 round ball, ramming then entire packaging paper cartridge as sabot wadding produced 2" groups at 25 yards. I only shoot 10 rounds at a time, although if I fired a combat load of 60 rounds I am sure that I would see the value of ramming a .690 ball. I have tried FF loads, but have trouble getting them to burn, so I will be working a mixed FF and FFF load in the future. I plagiarized your printer paper wrapping technique for the 10 cartridge battle pack tied with twine, if for no other reason than it is really cool. I use supermarket paper bags cut to fit my printer.

Hi Rob, great video. Must have been cold s hell. I also want to let you know that I'm so close to getting my British Snider MK III I can taste it. My first choice is a 3 band but a sweet carbine was just listed, so that if I dont get the rifle I may find myself compelled to purchase the carbine. I lost out on a Canadian Snider by napping this after noon. Yep a real nap. That was dumb. But I have to give you the credit for this bug that has bitten me. Thanks my friend, again excellent video, loved the cat at the end.

Either way, you'll end up with both so it really doesn't matter... :-) The Snider is a great rifle to shoot,..... a bit temperamental, but easy to load for and there will be a good deal of work up so you'll have a great project to last a while!.. Cheers.

Watching those drills, and such, I cannot help but be reminded of my own military service (U.S. Army, 1971-1974), and be aware of the difference in drills. One of the biggest differences being the fact that in many of the evolutions you illustrated you used just a single hand, whereas most U.S. Army evolutions involved two hands on the rifle whenever moving it. Have you made/could you make a similar video talking about the modern British/Canadian drills? Also, I have recently become aware of the Rudyerd Kipling poem "Route Marching", talking about marching across the Grand Trunk Road in India on relief. Could you talk about that sort of thing, and what the British Soldier would have gone through while on march?

I have not made Drill Videos of modern weapons. I don't own any. The whole drill bit is included simply to round out the "military application" of the rifles in use on the Channel,.... you know, to put things in a certain context. Hey Britishmuzzleloaders, have you ever been to the Halifax Citadel and seen any of the drill and uniforms? If so what do you think of the quality of drill and neatness of the uniforms?

I have. They do a good job. There are some things that I believe are embellishments and deviations over the historical but in general a solid representation of garrison life of the mid 1800s. They use the command "Fire" though... wasn't in use at that time... and they march at the Advance everywhere, which wasn't the case so much... The Slope would have been the most common to cover distance.

I never realised how micro managed nearly every aspect of a soldiers actions was. There seems to be a drill for absolutely everything in and out of combat. I wonder how much of these drill are variations of military drill handed down through the years and adapted from melee weaponry to rifles?

I stopped counting hours a long time ago, Bryan. There are that many. Brainstorming, scripting for certain parts, filming, editing as well as travelling, ammo production (where applicable), making or adjusting kit (as in this video) and other details make each project a colossal time-sink.... happy to do it of course!.. :-) The information is out there on the internet, in manuals and books. The minutia of Historical Shooting!

Brilliant videos. I own s snider Enfield I brought back from Afghanistan... it’s a conversion from the short Enfield musket. I really am not getting any real accuracy out of it. Did you try different bullet weights and powder amounts to get to your accurate load? Please keep these videos going.

yep. The different drill books do things differently... but at the same time they are very much the same. And that make sense considering that they are for similar weapons and the human body is the same. And when one remember that this is for use during combat and that every movement should be done with a minimum of effort... then it all make sense... and is generally well thought out and an effective system. (and if something don't make sense, Iam very likely not doing it correct or some other thing is an issue. like using an enfield for danish drill...)

At first, I thought this was an English racist epithet against the Irish, but looking further I discovered they were a band of guerrilla militants (terrorist/freedom fighter depending on your view) in the United States that raided into Canada after the American Civil War in order to force the UK to free Ireland. I was a bit embarrassed not knowing of this, but discovered that many Canadians don't know about the Fenian raids that helped unify Canada. Between 1866 and 1871, the Fenian raids of the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish Republican organization based in the United States, on British army forts, customs posts and other targets in Canada, were fought to bring pressure on the UK to withdraw from Ireland. Close to 100 in a Company by the book... Realistically, 20 men to a section with four sections in a Company for about 80 men.... 8 companies in a battalion for about 650 700 men in the Battalion. These numbers were never exact.
