The detail most people seem to ignore is that Penguins are clumsy on land, but graceful in the water... Which implies that they WON'T be able to speed up boats unless they're in the water. So there goes the Nether Highway idea. :/

I'm just going to guess it isn't happening at this rate and by the time it does they'll probably need updating again. It's really annoying they "updated" the swamp even though savannah and desert should have been first. It also sucks being someone who wanted savannah and desert a lot more than taiga because they both added new trees, they are both biomes I see far more often, they are better for mobs (savannah adds 2, desert adds meerkat which imo is better than fox)

The mob voting this year is just...This'll go poorly regardless of which wins. As you said, it feels like we always lose no matter which mob wins. Much rather see the mobs release over time in the order of which wins but being able to see Mob A, Mob C and Mob D get another chance would be great! Doesn't sit right that every other mob and biome hasn't had the chance but frogs were added despite still losing that vote due to the swamps being updated anyway.

i have an idea that will most likely not happen is that we have all mobs but the voting part is to add extra features in the winning mob. like armadilo scute will also upgrade sheild, crab claw can help yoou move mobs much easier, and penguins can have a cute back pack and follow you around to have extra storage ithink idk its just my opinion.

Actually pretty cool, but I think that's still gonna divide the fandom too much. For example adventurers will opt for the storage option and the min-maxers will opt for the better villager transport essentially. It's just easier if we don't have to sacrifice any mechanics, getting to choose which comes first was already good enough with the biome votes.

But yes, agree that they should have an update more focused on mobs and have the top 2 winners be added (with some little changes here and there) Plus theres not many biomes left to update, maybe give them a year break and then pick up afterwards and work on them once more

If we talk about my assessment and choice of mobs, then I had a very funny situation: right up to the release of the Penguin, I thought that the Crab would be the best option, but over time I realized a rather simple thing - "his" mechanics has a purely statistical effect. That is, yes, it would be more convenient for me to build, even if it was limited to an extension for 1-2 blocks, but I will not get any new experience and emotions other than "Well, it's more convenient". On the other hand, adding armor for dogs can generate new gameplay. Although I don't find dogs useful in combat, or even cute, however, if an armadillo and its functionality appears, then at least for the sake of experiment I would try to make a dog squad. Yes, I may be disappointed here, but at least I've tried something new for myself. With a Crab, and even to a lesser extent, with a Penguin, this will not happen. And finally, an armadillo is the safest option for voting, since the mechanics of armor for an animal have fewer pitfalls and questions than acceleration or elongation of the arm. And finally, I would like to speak about the vote. It is clear that developers are unlikely to think through everything in mobs, and it is from this that the lack of clear explanations of mechanics follows. They just throw in an early concept. But damn, well, you can at least try to throw in a version. I know that for Mojang, "concept conflict" 1.19 has become a painful experience, but to be honest, I would prefer it if during the video with the presentation of the mob we received some sketches or raw versions of mechanics (even a banal list of hypothetical ideas). This would already make everything that is happening more understandable. And in the best case, as I see it, videos with mobs should be structured like a video about the development of bees or a camel. That is, it would be 5-6 minute videos where the developers told what they were inspired by when creating a mob; how they drew and designed it; what goals and mechanics mobs should bring, etc. And for this, even the part with cartoons would not have to be cut. But, alas, this is unlikely to happen - uncertainty generates speculation, and speculation is hype and controversy.

I mean, crabs would be a nice ambient mob as well. A lot of people like making aquariums, so searching for a crab to put in the aquarium has the benefit of both giving the crab claw and a new addition to the aquarium. I love building aquariums personally and I adore fiddler crabs. I don't go out and tame dogs much in comparison, and dog armor wouldn't change that. I feel like how the mob affects a person's gameplay beyond their core function really depends on the player. Me personally, I wouldn't ever touch the armadillo or dog armor because I just don't bother with dogs in thefirst place, but would actively seek out crabs for both the utility of the claw and the mob itself. This is the problem with mob votes; there is *always* someone who loses because their gameplay experience doesn't line up with someone's who would actually use the new mob. They're not a small indie company, they could easily add all three and that's what people want.

The crab at least has a function that is always useful… extended reach could be good in nearly any situation. The others though…. The penguin is a waste of space, doing something that another very common mob already does, and the armadillos are the sort of thing where their “function” would be exciting for like 5 minutes, until the harsh reality hits that, oh yeah, the wolves don’t get any smarter from wearing it. A few points of armor is not going to make them viable. It sure will make them dead though, as players put those armor onto the wolves only to immediately see them get blown up or knocked off a cliff or something. And then everyone will just forget the armadillos exist after that. If the effect was like, okay if the wolf dies but it has the armor it’ll go respawn at your base and be waiting there for you, I could see that making sense. But this? Nah. And honestly even the crab ain’t that great. Mojang seems to have this major phobia about the idea of shaking up the balance even a bit, so it’s probably going to be like .5 blocks further distance or something that is just hard to even notice. These stupid votes just always seem to go like this. I mean, look at some of the others. The Phantom just annoys everyone and is very glitchy, it can’t even fly quite straight, the Sniffer’s “function” is to get you two entirely useless flowers, but only if you go on a big unnecessary quest just to get one of its eggs… why is it even in the game? And the glow squid is very literally just a palette swap. I can’t imagine how that idea even made it out the door. Not exactly excited about any of these options, considering all that. I’ve said it before and I’ll day it again: these votes are just a PR thing. Get people debating enough and that’s more hype for marketing.

Extended reach heavily depends on how can we even use the claw. Is it in the second slot? Does it have it's own equip system? Or do we just use it as an item like an axe?

Like maybe a necklace slot where you can equip certain items that each have their own benefits. But it'll probably just go in the totem hand, but that wouldn't make much sense. Nor does the "loading blocks into the claw" sounds hella dumb. Who knows.

I've worked as creative director and producer for a modest game development project (about 10 devs total), and it requires a LOT of careful planning and time management to hit deadlines. While fun for the community, these votes are a huge unknown variable for any producer's plans, ESPECIALLY because you can't shelve the content if it's proving more resource-intensive than initially planned since you already promised it. This can radically alter the development schedule, as we saw with Caves and Cliffs. I wouldn't be surprised if ALL the community votes remain restricted to small mob votes like this going forwards. A single mob with a very simple mechanic is far easier to plan around then some of the multilayered features promised in the past.

I dont think the wolf armor is cosmetic as its armor and will add to the gameplay incentivising your dogs to come out with you more. It also builds on an existing feature which is the wolf instead of adding something entirely new (the crab claw) which mojang has a history of doing that leads to inventory clutter and another feature to keep track of even tho itd be beneficial in some ways

Considering these mob votes are essentially once a year, I never really understood why they only picked one and permanently shelved the other 2. They should do these votes as a priority system, with the highest vote getting added in the nearest update and the other 2 added over the course of the year until the next vote. They get their publicity for MC Live and the players are happy... Eventually. I also never understood why they've only been doing passive/neutral mobs, and don't do hostile mobs or even boss mobs in these votes, or why they barely add hostile mobs to the game in the first place (Not counting reskinned varients like the endermite, piglin, husk, stray, etc.)

I feel like all three mobs are about as equally useless in the long run. Crab the least-so, since in a pure survival world its mechanic can be quite useful, but is very specific to building specific structures. Armadillo is probably the worst mob overall, but doggo armor is just something people would like as added customizability and protection for their pets. Again, very niche but still soemthing neat. Penguins are penguins, and while their ability isn't very well displayed, it could prove to be interesting. Even if a penguin has to be in water for their ability to take effect, I have a feeling there will be workarounds discovered for it to work in other ways. Still again a very niche ability. Honnestly, I'm just sick of mob votes at this point. All they do at this point is throw the community into a civil war and leaves everyone discontent after the mob is actually added. (This is coming from a GlowSquid enjoyer)

if Mojang really needs to generate attention for minecon i think what would be a million times better than the mob vote is what Pokemon go does with global challenges where you need to do things in game to unlock rewards, they could slowly reveal all the mobs and the global challenges along side them be it place 300,000,000 wooden, or stone block variants, mine 500,000 naturally generated diamond ore, kill 40,000,000 Blazes, that way it would generate hype not by getting people arguing over which is the best, but by helping each other build blaze farms beforehand, go minding and creating routes to mine all your diamonds in one go, and grinding out a stockpile of blacks for whatever you want to build, when the mob vote actually starts you can chill and do your part in game, and when your first pick wins, you can go help out with another challenge for a mob you wouldn't have originally picked, the amount of community building and hype that would cause would be unbelievable

Personally, I don't think the crab claw will be very used. It's going to be something that you have to hold, so it will be more annoying than useful, replacing a shield or totem of undying. The wolf armor is obviously not going to do much, and people still wouldn't take their dogs to battle. I like that the penguin speeds up boats. It makes ice boats crazy and they are better than dolphins since they affect the most common mode of transportation. But they are all cool.

The mob vote isn't even a democratic process, it's just a tool to generate engagement. I'm perfecly fine not having to choose, it's a proprietary game developed by a huge game company. They can show us the mobs once they're ready for a snapshot. No promises, no expectations, just show the result.

As much as like Penguins I actually like Armadillos more, but that’s just my opinion. I know Wolf armor won’t be very useful since wolves aren’t used in combat that much. I usually have 4 wolves at my base and when I venture out I breed them to make 2 babies and then take two adults with me, but I don’t expect them to survive.

Problem with releasing them all is when was the last time anyone mentioned the badlands or vulture? Mojang can say "we'll release them all eventually" all they want, but tbh, I don't think they ever intend to, they have zero interest in adding this stuff to minecraft now that it isn't part of the hype cycle. I really think they need to just stop doing mob votes, they've clearly displayed they don't have the manpower to add all three and no one has real fun with the votes. Personally, I think these just need to be done away with, maybe if they skipped voting and just designed a new mob every update they would be able to add more and not have to worry about the backlash? Mob design is one of the most intensive parts of adding them you know. That's what makes the least sense to their excuses imo, lines like "everything has to fit into minecraft's brand" make no sense because in order for the vote to happen they need to have the details of what they think the mob should be long before coding. Heck I feel like that's why people are able to add the mobs through mods so fast, because all the think work is done before they are added, at this point it's all about putting the pieces together.

Mobs don't attack dogs unless provoked. This basically does nothing... especially since thorns doesn't protect the mob from damage, meaning your wolves will eventually just die unless you continuously splash them with healing... But at that point its more effort then its worth.

The community only hates it as it was expected to come with multiple different farming plants that can only be obtained through the sniffers help. Mojang only added one new plant that has only decorative value. That’s far off the mark from what the community wanted with plants that added new foods.

Ngl, The Crab is the best choice. Especially due to the crab-claw. I mean, the crab-claw will not only make placing and removing blocks from a distance much easier, but it'll also change the combat system ( that's if it's properly applied to weapons ) allow for basically higher range. Meanwhile the Armadillo just has a feature where it can roll into a ball, and drop a scute which allows you to add armor to wolves. (Which, Gameplay-wise is quite useless because most people have their wolves/dogs or whatever you choose to call them in their bases, to better protect them. The aesthetic of it is cool, but in the grand idea of gameplay, it's not worth it. And lastly, the Penguin. Although it's an interesting idea to give you speed boost in boats, Which can help alot in different minecraft games and challenges such as manhunt and more, it also is too simple of a feature. Although it too gives more to the gameplay, it just isn't a big enough impact. And, grand gameplay wise, there's a high chance people might find an even faster way to travel in minecraft. (Thats my speculation). So, my final synopsis is: Crab: Impacts the most on Gameplay wise. Armadillo: Appears cool but isn't that much worth it. Penguin: Appears cool aswell, and impacts alot on gameplay, but ultimately not worth it. I us3d to think this but changed my mind.. Block reach is very convenient but there are not many occasions it's really nessisary. Even if crab loses the vote, block reach will inevitably make it into the game through another method, like a Potion. ARMADILLO DOG ARMOR is a concept we will never see again if armadillo loses.

Scaffolding, vines, and even water can do the crab claw’s job and possibly even better, and the penguin probably won’t give you the boost on land since mojang said that they’re slower on land which means that their boat boost ability would probably be exclusive to when they’re in the water, and the armadillo…yeah ok so you say that the armor is “useless” in gameplay, is armor for yourself useless? No, it’s not, this will actually let players bring out their dogs more, they were literally made to protect and fight with you once tamed, so armor would help the most, and plus, there are no mobs exclusive to the savanna biome, so the armadillo would make an excellent addition

I figure it would be hard to aim in certain angles and we already have scaffolding and temp blocks to help with building, the extra impact this will make could be minimal. * For Armadillo: -The feature is ok ish though idk why dev wont just add the extra recipe which use leather or iron or diamond, why need a scute specifically? I understand wanting cool aesthetics for your dog, but the practical applications of it pale in comparison to the crab’s claw. Honestly, this is the first mob vote that I’ve participated in that I truly want them to add all three. Anyway, I personally would want the crab to win. Though, I have this looming feeling that the armadillo would win, stir some hype, and then be forgotten about and then have criticism directed towards because we could’ve had the claw instead. If mojang does add wolf armor, whether or not it’s because of this here mob vote, I would want them to add other wolf upgrades that make it actually worth using. Obviously, a wolf can’t hold a sword, and something like a homing turret for its back doesn’t make sense. But I would want them to add something to the wolf to increase its attack damage. Because, as it currently stands, I don’t care to have a wolf in my base, or out on the field, and I still wouldn’t care to have one if all it gets is just armor. I just really hope mojang plays this right, because something like this could just as easily happen to the crab claw as well. I really hope that mojang implements the winner well enough to where it doesn’t feel like a disappointment

Here’s the three mobs, a PURPLE crab that will update a mob that’s pretty new as well as making you place blocks further, a cute armadillo that adds armor to wolfs so you don’t become heartbroken so easily and you have flashy wolfs maybe trims work?, or a penguin that updates a biome ALREADY UPDATED WITH THE CLIFFS UPDATE with big weird eyebrows and a useless Mechanic. I hate the idea of mob voting. It might be giving you one feature, but when you look at it, it's effectively depriving you if two other features. I switched to Terraria and never looked back. Their devs keep getting suggestions, and keep saying "Ok, we'll add that."

I think the best way Mojang can handle this is by only replacing last years pick with a new pick. So for example this year we would have to pick between the Rascal, Tuff golem, and one of the 3 new mobs. Heck, maybe at least give the 2nd place winner another shot, or last place winner doesn’t join.

I really hope we get penguins in a future update, it makes me pretty sad that we may never see it in the game because they put it in a very obviously unfair mob vote. Of course everyone's gonna go with the mobs that bring functionality like the crab or armadillo, those DESERVE to be in a vote because of what they bring to the table, on the other hand the penguin presented here feels like it shoulf have been a part of the actual update or at least have been given a better feature to come with it.

As someone who has 2 bases 15000+ blocks (= nearly 2000 in Nether) away from each other and a blue ice track highway in regular use between them, I'd say the penguin might be actually the most useful for me. The wolf armor _could_ have a functional use _if_ things other than mobs - such as lava or even water - weren't already more deadly to wolves. I might be in minority, but I don't think I've ever had too much trouble with being able to place blocks. Much bigger problem is lack of space in inventory, so if the claw would occupy a slot, I'd probably do better without.

You're assuming it would work with ice boats. In the trailer it says they are great swimmers, but clumsy on land. A more fair and logical assumption would be that they speed up your boat when pushing it from the water. But water cant be placed in the nether, so it won't help.

From a game design perspective, the penguin's "feature" is impressively useless. Not only is it absurdly niche, that exact niche has already been covered by dolphins. If I was Mojang's design lead and someone proposed this to me, my very first question would be: "why don't we just make the dolphin speed boost work on boats, too?" The exact same mechanical impact for a fraction of our development resources. And speaking of design, why attach dog armour and a reach-extender to some arbitrary mobs found in a single biome? Something as huge as reach-extension could very easily be used to incentivize the player to engage with the core gameplay loop of exploration and resource-gathering by making it a mid-game item that must be crafted using rare materials, or found in a dangerous area. Instead it's just something found on a random mob. A massive reward that demands very little player engagement. Likewise, dog-armour could be a sought-after exploration reward, like the saddle or horse-armour. Call me cynical, but this all tells me that these mob votes are here for community engagement, not game improvement, and thus whatever we vote for (regardless of how useful it sounds) won't actually be that game-changing when implemented. A good game designer wouldn't leave something that radically changes the game experience up to the whims of a vote. These mobs are here to make the community feel like they're contributing, while the actually impactful decisions continue to be made by the people who know what they're doing.

Yeah having all of them added eventually but put focus and priority on the winner makes a lot of sense. With the last one each had a completely unique mechanic that would take a lot of trial to get right but these three, and correct me if I'm wrong, have objectively far simpler additions and have very little reason to not just add all three beyond artificially injecting hype and debate into the community.

Here's the thing. Crabs should win. Why? Let me explain: You see, crab claws from the crabs are REALLY useful, in almost any situation. Like imagine how end crystal PvP and bed bombing for ancient debris would be easier? With the claw, you can do a safer usage of beds and end crystals. And most importantly, building. Instead of building stacks upon STACKS of dirt or something, you can just use only one stack or more of dirt, and the claw, and you're good to go! Here's my opinion of the other two mobs. Armadillos are good and all, and they provide scutes for well, dog armor, but almost all people know that once tamed, the dog will stay in our house 24/7. Penguins are also fine, but the boost for your boat just makes it, also fine. However, since they say that penguins are clumsy on land but graceful underwater, we can just say that penguins are just dolphins for BOATS. Now, we can agree that the crab should win. Like the many uses of the reach and stuff, I voted for the crab because of its FUNCTIONALITY. If we ended up voting for something like the armadillo and the penguin because of their design and ONLY their design, then it would become something useless. That is how we got the stupid glow squid. We voted for it because we thought that it could hypnotize/distract you. Now, we already have the stupid squid today. So, here's the comparison thing. Crab: could win for it's functionality Armadillo: pretty situational Penguin: pretty much a reskinned dolphin.

Crabs seem really useless at first, but once the extendo claw comes in there so many questions on what it will do and not, which can be very disappointing if it dosent do what we interpenetrated before. Armadillo maybe should be added, because right now the Savannah barely has anything to them compared to how much other biomes have developed over the years. They are also kind of cute and the wolf armour idea sounds great, but we dont know how much it will protect the wolf itself, so it could be pretty useless. Finally Penguin is obviously the favourite and the cutest, but damn useless. Even with the extra speed, boats go fast enough across the water, and if there is no nearby then the mechanic is useless. Boats on ice might go faster, but again they're pretty much fast enough and might make it hard to control if the effect plays in. We also dont know how much the effect will last or if they will follow us. Mob vote bad.

I theorized that the update theme for 1.21 will leave no design space to add a new mob that has a real-life counterpart. Sure, Mojang could add whatever they want whenever, but usually Overworld mobs like this are put into an update's theme. So, I believe if 1.21 will focus on... let's say an End Update, they deliberately choose this year's mobs in the mob vote to be real-life creatures, since all design focus for the theme of 1.21 might not be Overworld at all.

I'm not a huge Minecraft guy, but the mob vote makes no sense to me. They come up with three useful, highly desirable mobs which have no reason to not all be in the game. Minecraft is a game that doesn't tap out on updates after a couple years like other games. They are a studio that works exclusively on Minecraft and have all the time and money in the world to do so. Is there any reason why they wouldn't just add all three over time? Why does picking one mean they have to abandon the others if they all contribute something to the game?

Actually gameplay wise about the wolf, some players do prefer using them in combat and it’s pretty useful when attacking certain mobs without letting your dog die quickly.
