A two-part series on cleaning and organizing Lego CCBS parts, I conclude with a basic outline on how to prepare your own storage and organization systems followed by an extremely long and detailed look at my personal organization system for my Lego collection.
Part One: Sorting a Lego CCBS Mess
• The Mocitorium: Sortin...
BINS AND CONTAINERS USED IN THIS VIDEO:
Most were bought from Target or Walmart.
On my desk are four Sterilite Small 3 Drawer Units stacked into two towers (www.sterilite.com/SelectProduc.... The link is essentially the same item just in a different color. These are great drawers but suffer from lack of removability. The each drawer is fixed into the frame and cannot be removed. I purchased mine from Walmart.
The center unit on my desk is a 40 Bin Organizer with Full Length Drawer (www.harborfreight.com/40-bin-o.... I purchased mine from Harbor Freight, but it can also be found on Amazon. Each drawer is removable and the overall unit is pretty great for the price.
Below my desk I have four Sterilite Wide 3 Drawer Units stacked into two towers, with two additional units off to the side of my desk (www.sterilite.com/SelectProduc.... These stack very well and can easily stack 3 or 4 on top of each other. Be careful not to leave the higher drawers wide open as they can fall over if they have a lot of heavy parts in them. I purchased mine from Walmart but I know Target carries virtually identical ones as well (the ones I've seen aren't perfectly see-through like the Walmart ones though).
The bins inside the drawers below my desk are Sterilite Divided Cases (www.sterilite.com/SelectProduc...) I use both the dividers in the drawers as well as the clear rectangular containers for storage inside each drawer for easy removal (I break the lids off of the clear rectangular containers). I purchased mine from Target.
In addition, I use standard thin Tupperware containers as well as square flat Tupperware containers.I do not have links for these containers but they were purchased at Walmart and grocery stores.

Stippling, these have been so helpful to me. I used to have to rummage around my parts bin to just find a piece that was in front of me the whole time. Now I have sorted my parts bin and it's so easy! Thank you so much! I also really like the idea of having unopened sets that you can build if you're bored.

When I first saw this video I new I wanted to start properly sorting my LEGO parts, something I had never really bothered with in the past. Now I've finally done it, after over a decade of all my parts being randomly thrown into giant bins or strewn across my floor, I actually have them all organized in a system very similar to yours. I hope now to create MOCs much more efficiently, and have more fun while doing it. So thanks, Stippling, for the inspiration.

I like this organization style, and the only thing I'd add are little pieces of tape or sticky paper that have what each drawer contains written on them along with a certain color, with bones being green, shells being orange, axels being red, pins being blue, axel-pin hybrids being purple, beams being yellow, and everything else being white. I like color-coding(the only way I didn't forget to do my homework was to have sticky notes on both the paper and the corresponding spot on my agenda), and I think that would be even see at a glance.

I think those trans-orange/lime green heads are called Av-Matoran heads. Don't quote me on that though. Also, this was SO helpful, I've now started my own 30 MM challenges. It's either challenges I've thought of, or comments which I wished to see you do. But there are a few of your challenges. The blindfold one was HELL, but I made something I'm proud of! Thanks!

The filming studio? That I'm a bit less eager to do since it's not all that beneficial to the building side of things. Could we possibly get a MOCitorium video about your technique for doing a 30MinMOC? Like, what's your process? How do you decide how to handle a prompt? What suggestions can you give to people who want to do their own personal 30MinMOC challenges?
@PlayStippling
@PlayStippling 8 жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting suggestion and one I will definitely have to consider. I'd have to think about how I would want to handle that though, as that might be a very niche audience of people interested in building things in 30 minutes. I can say that I usually pause before I start. You'll notice I change the camera position just before I begin building (to get a better angle). Once that camera is in the proper position, I usually take a minute or two, breathe, maybe get a drink, and just think where I want to go with it. That being said, I intentionally give myself as little time as possible to mentally prepare so that it's as genuine of an experience as is portrayed in the videos. One big thing for me is I do not rummage through my bins or even open them once the challenge is selected. I typically try to frame a general idea of what I want to do (frequently I spend some time thinking about it when the challenge is picked weeks prior so I have some idea of where I would go with it anyways), and where I want to start in the build. Sometimes I want to get the framework of the body done, while other times I may start with the head. I also try to keep the build with what I imagine the expectations of the ideas creator was, so for example in the last video the full idea was: "30 minute Moc idea! Make Okoto's boogie man! A truly terrifying moc that makes young protectors wake up in a cold sweat and could possibly rival a Toa! Make it as scary as you can!" So I knew that it would have to be as big or bigger than a Toa, it would have to play upon the innate fears of the Okotan culture (in particular children), and it would probably not be a humanoid. From there I knew it would probably be a darker color scheme, so initially I went with Black, Dark Blue, and trans-red. I ended up omitting the Dark Blue since I changed the mask to be the Lava Beast mask and it was complicating things more than it needed to be. That's just a little taste of my mindset and how it all works. I could probably go on and on about it to those interested, but like I said I'm not sure that many people would be interested. Maybe a more general video on how to conceptualize and build something would be a better approach. If you have any specific questions about 30 minute moc building I would love to discuss it further with you though!

What happens to your Bionicle sets after you review them, do they get disassembled and sorted into those containers or are they put on display?
@PlayStippling
@PlayStippling 8 жыл бұрын
All official sets are put on display. Most custom creations are also put on display other than 30MM creations which are either kept aside to be fixed up or disassembled. I have one of every official Generation 2 set on display (and every CCBS Star Wars set) in addition to the parts in those bins. The only "official" things that I do not keep together are combiner models, as they generally aren't all that appealing to be and that would require me to buy at least 3 of each set to have parts to spare.

MOCATORIUM for Ekimu 2016! Also get working on the Makuta MOC Contest! You can win all of the 2015 and 2016 sets!
@PlayStippling
@PlayStippling 8 жыл бұрын
Ekimu is definitely planned but I don't have anything definitive yet. He was the closest to perfect in my eyes, mostly because Lego took very few risks on him outside of his color scheme. Makuta contest I will be entering in something assuming I make something worth submitting. The extra parts could be cool. *IF* I did win I would probably consider donating the prize or at least some of it. Or maybe a giveaway? Or maybe I'll take all that back and be greedy and keep it all mwahahahaha! Just kidding, I doubt I'll win. I'm too traditionalist in my build style. Someone will make a 100ft tall Makuta with 20,000 parts and complex mechanisms and I'll just go =O

+Play Stippling Yeah thats one problem with MOC Contest, there is always someone that's gonna make a Giant Godzilla and will win! I hope you win because you are making awesome mocs! I dunno how you are getting the money to buy pieces and sets, but I still hope for you winning! I will lost definitely! I had a request for something: can you review the Bionicle Monthly Magazines (the scorpion and the falcon of Ekimu)! I said what I had to say so have a nice day/night and be cool as you are!
@PlayStippling
@PlayStippling 8 жыл бұрын
+Zanton Ivanov I'll definitely do reviews of those if I can get my hands on the official versions. I have an identical falcon but without the magazine it just feels dishonest to review it. Plus it's so small that without the magazine it wouldn't be a very exciting video.

Hey, Stippling! I have a question? are you going to be entering in the Makuta building contest! well, you probably are? and I really want to order off bricklink but I can't figure out how to order all my items in my cart at once? if ya know please tell me! and great video! =D
@PlayStippling
@PlayStippling 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Avohkii, yeah I will most likely enter something in unless I totally hit a dry spell build-wise. As for bricklink, each cart is store specific, so you can't combine them. You'll have to order everything you want from one store, and then place a separate order from the next store.

@PlayStippling
@PlayStippling 8 жыл бұрын
I collected the majority of those pieces just by going to the store and buying Bionicle and Star Wars sets. That's typically the cheapest and fastest way to get a lot of pieces. Once you have a solid collection, you'll want to get your specific needed pieces from Bricklink or another website.
