The sound is actually the main reason I've always preferred Squad to Arma - the stress that a humvee with a .50 can induce in Squad just from sound alone doesn't compare to anything in Arma where all the guns just sound like aggressive snaps. Glad to see that there's a mod that improves that.

After watching the heist scene in the movie ‘Heat’, I became obsessed with good sound design. I was just in awe at how immense the gunfire sounded, and how it perfectly encapsulates the chaos of a firefight in an otherwise civil environment. When people talk about immersion in video games, they often refer to flashy effects and realistic visuals. For me, good sound design is the only thing that makes me say “wow”

Game sound designer here (15 years of almost exclusively first person shooters). There are reasons why we don't turn everything up to 11 when it comes to gunplay. In short: It's exhausting. It's cool AF for a half hour, but it becomes overbearing pretty quickly, and it can literally hurt the player if done incorrectly. Kudos to the folks who put this sound mod together, don't get me wrong. It sounds fantastic. But, we could never ship something like this right out of the box. We record a ton of different weapons in different environments, bullet whizbys, impacts, and even incoming fire (though shooting at $4,000 microphones makes for a stressful day). A lot of sound designers also shoot recreationally and/or hunt. Point being, we do know what it actually does sound like IRL; it's thrilling and it overwhelms the senses. But, we just can't do that to people. So, our job becomes figuring out how to retain the power and ferocity of a gunfight, without throttling the players' eardrums. And it's a lot of fun to find the signature aspects of a weapon's sound, and emphasize, augment, and styalize that. Love the Reforger content of late. Rock on. Pew pew pew.

I can appreciate what you're saying. I think, for a AAA game, Insurgency Sandstorm does a great job of sound design that trades some of the sheer saturating volume of gunfire in order to accentuate the differences in weapon report of each of the guns. The AK-74s and M4s for example sound very distinctly different in that game, as if you can hear actual differences in the way the sound propagates through the receiver because of the different mechanical assembly tolerances (I don't know if that's what it actually is, feel free to correct me), and the difference matters because it quickly gives the unexperienced player useful information. It would take a real person a few hours of repeated exposure to the real sounds to learn and audibly identify the difference between the report of an AK and an M4, just because you have to acclimate to the sound level.

Damn I love a Drewski Reforger video! I think the problem with this sound mod is that once you experience it, you can’t go back to “normal” sound. War Tapes sound mod needs to do helicopters next. Issue is KZbin compression absolutely destroys the quality making it unwatchable. I've watched gameplay videos of games that feature dark nights, and I won't be able to see a darn thing, yet when I play the game myself I can clearly see when it's dark when I couldn't in the gameplay videos that were on the same situation.

I love Hunt: Showdown. They updated their tinnitus system so your friend firing a Nitro Express rifle right next to you will defean you too. It's no longer just your own gun shots. Which means you can theoretically, use suppressive close range fire to deafen your enemies so they don't hear your nade or push...

I think Tarkov was the first game that made gunshots truly scare me, specifically the Toz when I was learning the game. Not because of scavs reputation with it but because it was so damn loud that I thought it was some other huge gun.

Why did you choose to do X, what did you observe, and what prompted the decision. Why did you flank left as opposed to pushing up. Why did you fall back instead of staying put. That kind of stuff. Short 15min videos of strategically interesting situations.

Sound is one of the biggest things for me. First time i played squad, i did the tutorial with volume maxed out without noticing, and at the time they make you crawl under fire i almost shat myself from the loudness

here in the netherlands civilians dont really have guns etc, however every 31st of December our entire country sounds like a warzone, fireworks everywhere, insane explosions from people who took the law as a sidequeest and I love it. there is just something about the violence that just gets me addicted to it😂

I love how the wildlife instantly starts to chirp the instant a firefight ends. Ain't not chance that would happen in real life, they'd be fleeing or staying quiet. I know it's not a big deal at all but it would be cool to see a milsim with that type of depth.

I love reforger and that's still a very hard no from me. Not only is it definitely not for everybody, even if it's for you, it has so many glaring issue and a severe lack of content there's no chance it could be considered.

I hate assumptions but I'm gonna go on a leaf here and assume you're young and impressionable. You don't think things with full logic (not a cut down. You'll gain logic with experience). That "Game of the year" feeling is Drewski's skill, knowledge and talent for making these videos so well done and having played this games so much he knows every ins and outs. So it would naturally make this game very appealing. Same goes for many games that are good not great but Shroud makes them popular. Tarkov is unique but it sucks ass for many more reasons than it being unique. Unique or novel doesn't always make things good. The reason it got so popular was because of the content creators or as I like to call them. KZbin/Twitch actors. I hope you take this as just my opinion and not a harp on your intellect or character. I just feel you might have trend mind and not logic mind on stating this game should be GOTY.

About the radio comms, I think the way they have squad comms set up is pretty good. Anyone who joins the same in-game squad will get put on the same secondary frequency, which in practice works the same as Squad but also allows people who aren't in the squad to join the frequency of you want them to. Not enough people coordinate radio channels, taking a few minutes to get everyone on the same secondary channel seriously helps coordination

A recent example of capturing the chaotic symphony of war that I was impressed with was a mod for the Master Chief Collection called "Trooper - Firefight 2024". It basically overhauls the game to where you are not a spartan, but a regular ole grunt in green. With additions to custom weapons, 3rd person camera, and movement changes; the soundscape is really impressive. With NPCS shouting over comm systems to the reverb of distant weapons firing, it feels like an old school SOCOM game with a Halo theme.

in response to your comment about intermediate cartridges at 41:00 - maybe they should add an "intermediate" (TM) downed state that you *cannot* eventually wake up from; The idea is that you're recoverable, but only through the medical efforts of your teammates. And then rework the downed / "super-downed" / dead status system accordingly. And make it so all medical actions can be performed while prone. Also, damn the pixelated-ish effect in the reticle from the laser emitter inside the Eotech at 1:00:25 is perfect.
