Jon - the fundamental issue with champions going for double champ status immediately without clearing out their respective divisions first is that it clogs up divisions for ages. Volk was afforded the opportunity because he went through Max multiple times, Yair, Ortega, TKZ, etc, so there was no legitimate contender in line. It’s simply not fair to the rest of the division if Sean gets to challenge for it immediately after 1 defense against a guy who really didn’t deserve it - simply because he’s UFC’s little darling. It’s not fair to Merab, Sandhagen, Umar, etc. Come on now - what happened to the UFC being “largely a meritocracy”?

You should be a dominant champ in your division before you jump the line in other divisions. It slows down 2 divisions and punishes the guys working their way through the ranks. Connor might have 2 belts but he isn't the greatest in either division and I think it hurt his legacy. Also, no instant rematches in Title fights unless it ends in a no contest. There is no way Izzy should get a shot at the title without fighting up.
