I must say that, though NO ONE will ever be able to top the energy of the original studio version of this great song, none of the covers I've found on KZbin come anywhere near this live version. Sure, they're a bit older, but they sound great! Mickey Dolenz is a very good singer and has a wonderful natural sound to his voice. I'm a musician, and I loved this song in 8th grade, and I love it to this day. Nice job, guys!

I can't tell you how instrumental (dual meaning with pun) the TV series was entertaining our entire household during the 80s. Back then the series were just reruns, but by 1989, I had purchased every MONKEYS album and cassette tape ever released.

Mickey Dolenz has one of the most underrated voices in the music industry. When you here him singing there is no question who it is.
@kenmurphy6792 Жыл бұрын
Aw come on bro. It's pretty much the same as recognizing someone's spoken voice who you've heard speak hundreds of times. Just because it sounds familiar enough to be recognized, doesn't make it/him "one of the most underrated voices in the music industry." He's no great vocalist like maybe Dimash Kudaibergen or someone similar. ------>>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4i9iYqKhbGmpaM

Great vocal Mickey! Great backing vocal, Peter!
@PlanetRockJesus7 жыл бұрын
Start at 1:18 and watch Peter singing. At one point he stops, but the vocal keeps going. Then he keeps going after the vocal stops. Either someone was singing that part from offstage (while he lip-synced), or the vocal was replaced in studio after this concert. Or, maybe his mic was just down and the other singers in the band were doing the vocals.
@MichaelTegio5 жыл бұрын
PlanetRockJesus I’d suspect his mic is just turned down on this particular song - there are other performers song backing vocals, too.

It was about saying good bye to someone who was leaving for Nam....I was a young girl when my dearest cousin left for Nam. He lived with us for several years. When he returned he was different. He had two stories I will always remember - he was the radio man and if he was captured he had a cyanide pill to take and he couldn't sleep in his bed - but under it. The Viet Cong would strike at night and shoot shrapnel right above their mattresses! I am very glad he came home.

The Monkees are god and we miss Davy Jones. Bowie changed his name so as not to interfere with Davy. This is humorous but serious music Like the Archies. Where's Riverdale from here anyway? I'm guessing it's about 30 miles east of downtown LA but after all these years still not sure. Veronica and Betty are probably still there. Vixens from pages of comic books based on real life.The Monkees and the Archies wouldn't say this if it wasn't true. Herman Munster is the greatest dad and Al Lewis is my grandpa. Car 54 where are you? NYC is about 3000 miles out east of here.

To all the posters claiming this is a war song, it is not. A simple google search will confirm this to be so.

This is what a truly talented musician would sound like BUT there's so much Auto-Tune being used in today's music era that it almost all artists use it in about 60% give or take. There's nothing wrong with using it BUT FOR ME it boils down to me being turned off by a song almost everytime I hear it in ANYONE'S songs. Am I alone in this??! 😐😢😑

Mickeys voice just isn't what it used to be A perfect example of why I don't go to concerts anymore. They change the performance from the original recording and not usually for the better. I only go to Chicago, Elton, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, and Jonny Cash, etc. because they perform like the original. I can get the original music from youtube and cd/vinyl for free or a lot less.
@chriscianciolo58232 жыл бұрын
In what universe does Elton John still sound like his classic recordings? Johnny Cash has been dead for 20 years. What point are you trying to make?
@BillHaack2 жыл бұрын
@@chriscianciolo5823 I mis-typed. My point was meant to be what I said in the last sentence, even my favorite performers (including when the Monkees and Beatles were on tour) I would never go to their concerts. Apparently, at the time (1 year ago)I was incapable of stringing together consecutive sentences to make one coherent thought. The bottom line was to be: "A perfect example of why I don't go to concerts anymore. They change the performance from the original recording and not usually for the better." It was supposed to be followed with a sentence that I no longer (or since 1972) attend live concerts of legends, because they always disappoint me, at great expense. Why did you feel so moved to reach out to me about this 365-day-old post? Did it really matter what my reply was? Were you hoping to engage in meaningless banter over something that isn't even relevant? What if in "my universe" I thought they sounded the same? Do you really even care what I replied? BTW, Cash wasn't dead when I saw him perform Have a great life, Chris. Good luck looking for others to correct or argue with. Looks like you have an average talent and potential career doing this.
