Play magic fingers!! This takes me back to my childhood and my girlfriend, Julie, who was so in love with Davy Jones! I really loved all their songs too!!

Even that wink Mike does at the end melts my heart...and I'm just a drummer. 😅

Mike had a beautiful smile, just like the other guys.

That wink at the end always puts me into 12 year old girl hysteria mode. Growing up I had the biggest crushes on Mike and Peter. When my mother told me they were “old men” (this was in the mid 80s) I cried for a week straight. Watching the show on Nickelodeon I had no idea it was an older show. But I still love them and squee every time I see that wink. 😉

Unbeknownst to most, Michael Nesmith was an accomplished guitarist prior to the Monkees era. Great video, thanks for posting.

@@presentvalleysundayarchive2668 Peter Tork was as well, Peter was also good friends with Steven Stills. (Crosby, Stills, Nash). Sad thing, Nesmith and Tork didn't like each other whatsoever, they only tolerated each other enough for the work. The Monkees has an interesting history, well worth reading about. Take care!

@@presentvalleysundayarchive2668 Yes, Nesmith feels bad about the relationship, I guess he came to terms with it now that Peter has passed. Life is a mystery, enjoy it and the one around you while you can. We can re-live the past and learn from it, but we can't learn anything about the future for we don't know if there is one.

It’s more complicated than that, I never heard Tork didn’t like Nesmith but he definitely liked his songs, when they were arguing with Don Kirshner about another bubblegum song he said “Let’s just do one of Mike’s.” Conversely I remember an interview with Nesmith in 1971 asking why he didn’t form a band with Tork after they’d both quit, and he replied ”I don’t like Peter Tork. I didn’t like playing in a band with him and I don’t like him today. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with him; Peter’s actually very intelligent and he’s also a good musician. I just don’t like him.” Yet when they were forbidden to play on their first album, Nesmith was allowed to produce his two great songs, the one above and Sweet Young Thing, and he snuck Peter into those sessions to play guitar. I don’t know why, he already had James Burton and Glen Campbell, but he did. So they certainly seemed to respect each other, but I think Nesmith was just an eccentric character as well as a brilliant songwriter. And he was great friends with Davy Jones actually, because they were both into surrealist British comedy like the Goon Show.

Why are the lips and lyrics so off from each other?

Watch some more of their videos. The Monkees often had fun with the lip-synching. Especially Mickey. Sometimes it’s downright hilarious.
