The Monkees had some great composers at their disposal. This was composed by Mike Nesmith - with Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

I love this song. It actually has more soul than it's given credit for.

it really kicked ass for a song that wasn't even 2 minutes long , should have been at least 4 minutes

Greatest Mike Monkee song ever!! So freaking ignored it makes me crazy! R.I.P. Davey, we'll no doubt all miss him! Has anyone noticed how strong his background voice is in this song?! Sadly unnoticed classic!

Sweet young thing was one of this black Detroit chick's favorite monkees songs! Loved Mike's vocals and although davy was my favorite monkee I loved Mary Mary, you just may be the one, the door into summer and all the songs Mike Nesbitt did with his soulful country rock style. Monkees forever!

Mike co wrote this with the legendary Carole King but he wrote great songs. He wrote different drum which Monkees producers did not want but the song became a huge hit for Linda Rondstadt. My opinion, he was also the most handsome of the Monkees. All four were adorable but Mike is...awesome. He still has a sly smile at 70 something.

Yes, "Different Drum" was a hit for The Stone Poneys Featuring Linda Ronstadt in early 1968. They released a couple of follow-up singles but neither one was a hit like "DIfferent Drum'. You can also find the song on one of Linda Ronstadt's Greatest Hits albums in the 1970's on the Asylum label. The Stone Poneys hit is on the Capitol label, where Linda Ronstadt later recorded her #1 solo album "Heart Like a Wheel" album which featured the splendid cover versions of "You're No Good" and "When Will I Be Loved'' in 1975.

What a fine-ass song this is. Holy crap, where's this one been all my life?!

It's been on side 2 of The Monkees' splendid first LP since it's release in October of 1966, right before the very funny "Gonna Buy Me a Dog". These two songs were two reasons why this record was #1 on the LP chart for 13 weeks!

@Onneff69 Could be. I seem to recall it was transmitted pre-digital - thus in Britain, it'd've (my favourite contraction) been run at 25 f.p.s. rather than its original 24, to avoid strobing with the 50Hz power supply. Thus it'd've run around 4% FAST (translating to about a full tone [one note] high). Sorry it took 8 months to get to you. I only recently discovered YT only alerts one to the LATEST comment on a piece!

Please slow the playing speed down. The soundtrack is going much too fast. SYT is a great piece of vintage garage rock Monkees and it just kills at its normal speed. Thanks.

I bet there are no convincing live-performances of this band - in 1967 they had Jimi Hendrix as opening act though...
