RIP DAVY JONES --- you're going to be missed ... I will never forget you - not ever! You were my first 'celebrity' crush! May you ride the skies on beautiful white horses :)

Despite contrary belief, all of them are very capable musicians/songwriters. While The Monkees was a tv show set up well in advance with songs being submitted by and featuring many soon to be famous musicians behind the scenes (Boyce & Hart, Glen Campbell, Carole King, Neil Diamond, etc.), the Monkees themselves were the key to the band's sound thanks to Mickey's fantastic vocals. Even on the 1st album, Mike wrote/produced Sweet Young Thing & Papa Gene's Blues & Peter played guitar on them.

These guys should have been inducted way back into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Davey and the Monkees were very important to pop culture in the late 60's and had great success. Made so many of us happy with the great work they did. We will always love Davey Jones!

This clip came out in March 1967 and later got a lot of radio play as "an exclusive" since it wasn't released as a single. In 1968,a polished version of this song was released to the public (I liked the "unpolished" version better.) THANKS FOR THE GREAT POST!

The guitar solo was actually played by Louis Shelton who was in the original Monkees backing band The Candy Store Prophets which was a Boyce & Hart produced group. Nesmith had to fake playing this in early videos and the closeups were edited in with Sheldon actually playing. When the Monkees popularity boomed, they took over creative control and played their own instruments with some session musicians supporting.

Our generation was blessed having this big titans of music: Beatles, Monkees, Rolling Stones, and many more at the time were they conquer the music world..Many years will pass before such musical impact will be here...Probably we won't be around by the time that'll happen and to see how a little of our youth die, hurts. Harrison, Lennon, Jones...Few of those titans...RIP Davy Jones.

This recording and film of "Valleri" was made in *1966* and appeared on the TV show's first season. The version released on the '68 album "The Birds & The Bees & The Monkees" is a re-recording with added horns and a more intricate guitar solo. Personally, I prefer this early, "rougher" version.

Oh yes!When Davy arrived the U.S. the first time he was in the Ed Sullivan Show and this was the show the Beatles had their first apperance in the U.S.too.From this moment they where friends.There are many many stories of them together,one for example that they took drugs together in Hyde Park and did loose Mickey :)The Beatles never would have said that the Monkees weren't a real Band! On the evening Davy died Paul MC Cartney did a moment of silence for him in his own concert.What a sad day:(

On this date in 1968 {Mar. 9th} "Valleri" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #3 & spent 10 weeks in the Top 100. Reached #12 on the U.K. Singles chart Was the last of the Monkee's six Top 10 records... Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart The flip side of this record also charted; "Tapioca Tundra" peaked at #34 and was written by Monkee Mike Nesmith...

Original version here. Recorded in1966. It was re-recorded in 1968 and horns were added too. Now.. you can take out the horns as they are in just one of the channels. (can't remember if it is the Left or Right).. I removed the "Horn" channel then added the other channel to that side making it a 1968 version with NO horns! Sounds great too! Also separated the channels just a tad bit to give it a "Stereo" effect..

@Hope2009pc There are at least 4 versions I know of, two of which used the Monkees themselves playing all instruments. The difference between these two is in how much Mickey's singing was mixed in with Davy's. Frankly, these versions are my favorites of them, demonstrating how good Mike was with the guitar, something not often demonstrated.
@elfhermie12 жыл бұрын
@MechoMadness Sure, all it takes is one song and this is it. A fantastic love song, featuring Davy playing very capable acoustic rhythm guitar to a song that he penned. It may not be your cup of tea, but I think many would say this is a wonderful song (and that's coming from a Maiden fan!). It's been performed with several different guitar and sax solos throughout the years depending on his bandmates, bet rest assured that Davy has total control of this song and how it's performed.
