CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When The Monster (Boris Karloff) realizes that his Bride (Elsa Lanchester) hates him like everyone else, he blows up the castle.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This greatest of all Frankenstein movies begins during a raging thunderstorm. Warm and cozy inside their palatial villa, Lord Byron (Gavin Gordon), Percy Shelley (Douglas Walton), and Shelley's wife Mary (Elsa Lanchester) engage in morbidly sparkling conversation. The wicked Byron mockingly chastises Mary for frightening the literary world with her recent novel Frankenstein, but Mary insists that her horror tale preached a valuable moral, that man was not meant to dabble in the works of God. Moreover, Mary adds that her story did not end with the death of Frankenstein's monster, whereupon she tells the enthralled Byron and Shelley what happened next. Surviving the windmill fire that brought the original 1931 Frankenstein to a close, the Monster (Boris Karloff) quickly revives and goes on another rampage of death and destruction. Meanwhile, his ailing creator Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) discovers that his former mentor, the demented Doctor Praetorius (Ernst Thesiger), plans to create another life-sized monster -- this time a woman! After a wild and wooly "creation" sequence, the bandages are unwrapped, and the Bride of the Monster (Elsa Lanchester again) emerges. Alas, the Monster's tender efforts to connect with his new Mate are rewarded only by her revulsion and hoarse screams. "She hate me," he growls, "Just like others!" Wonderfully acted and directed, The Bride of Frankenstein is further enhanced by the vivid Franz Waxman musical score; even the film's occasional lapses in logic and continuity (it was trimmed from 90 to 75 minutes after the first preview) are oddly endearing. Director James Whale was memorably embodied by Ian McKellen in the Oscar-winning 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters.

I think a lot of people miss the context. She is like a newborn in an adult body, like her intended companion was before her; but he has not had time to grow and mature, while she is being bombarded by sensations she doesn't yet know how to register. So she reacts the way any newborn reacts: she SCREAMS!

I'm surprised that more people don't find this movie to be incredibly sad; all the monster wanted was companionship - it wasn't his choice to return to life as the thing that he did, it was thrust upon him. When he did finally meet one of his own kind, so to speak, she hated and feared him, finally pushing him over the line to ending it all. A real tragedy, if you ask me

I think what is so amazing about Elsa Lanchester's performance is that it is so unbelievably brief -- just a tiny bit of screen time -- and yet is so classic and iconic and memorable. Her performance seers itself on to the brain and you can never forget it.

Rewatching "Bride of Frankenstein" for the first time in many many years, it truly is amazing how Elsa Lancaster was able to totally stole the entire film as a very minor character who only appears in literally only one scene. The only other example I can think of off the top of my head of an actor/actress being able to do that is Tami Stronach's performance as The Childlike Empress in "The Neverending Story." And even though it's technically a horror film, both "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein" really transcended their intended genre and have almost a fairy tale-like quality to them.

I think one of the more fascinating exchanges in this scene takes place when Frankenstein tells Elizabeth "No I can't leave them! I can't!" and the monster, with almost an affectionate disposition says "No, go! You live!". I always wonder if the monster empathizes with them because he's projecting his own desire for companionship onto the couple and he doesn't want to rob them of that gift, if he simply feels some sort of connection with his creator in spite of everything, if the monster's perceived Henry's reluctance to re-animate the dead and now appreciates this discrepancy between him in Pretorius, or if Henry's unwillingness to abandon his creations to certain doom changes the way the monster perceives him.
@jahimjauh-hey5653
@jahimjauh-hey5653 4 жыл бұрын
Probably the best explanation/justification for it. Originally they filmed it so everyone dies but the test audience hated the ending so they reshot it so Henry and Elizabeth live. I definitely prefer seeing the monster spare Henry since it brings closure to the monsters character arc and he gets to have one final moment of redemption.

The monster was just a little too eager to grab that lever. First dates are always awkward and initial impressions can be very misleading. Invite her for lunch, a little talk, who knows. If anyone one is interested, Universal did a Haunted house this year titled "The Bride of Frankenstein Lives". It's an Alternative universe where The Bride realizes that she loves Frankenstein but it does not change the ending, the explosion still happens one way or another. But in the explosion Frank dies but the Bride does not. Over grief, she decides to bring him back any means Necessary. I won't spoil what happens in the house as I only gave you the set up. The Bride of Frankenstein belongs to a small group of movies in which the titular character is on screen for only a few minutes but leaves an unforgettable impression (Dr. Strangelove is another). Elsa Lanchester does a brilliant job here. Her birdlike movements and reptilian hiss are particularly memorable and suggest that the Bride's higher brain centers may not have survived the "operation" fully intact.

One of the greatest horror films of all time. Sure, it's not terrifying today, but that's beside the point. Never was there a monster movie so tragic like this. I hope future filmmakers get inspired by this classic. Eat your heart out, Tim Burton.
@StevieStitches

+Lucas Davis I'm sure this wasn't meant to be terrifying in 1935, either, or the monster wouldn't be sympathetic and saying softly "Friend? Friend?" It was meant to be tragic, German expressionistic, Gothic, macabre, creepy, sure, but I don't believe it was really meant to be terrifying.

Yeah. As Marlyn Monroe said in The Seven Year Itch (1955) after seeing The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), she said, "I felt so sorry for the creature at the end. He was kind of scary looking, but he wasn't really all bad. I think he just craved a little affection. A sense of being loved and needed and wanted." Marilyn Monroe perfectly described the difference of the Golden Age horror films with the sympathetic monsters. Those films are more a horror for the characters themselves, the monsters being feared, rejected, hated, that's their horror. Rather than sadistic slasher horror, grotesque torture horror with purely evil sadistic demonic spirits, cannibalistic zombies, sadistic torturers. Vomit bag movies just trying to scare and gross you out, and feed into some sickos sadistic fantasies..

I like An American Werewolf in London by John Landis, which has a variety of humor and horror, The Thing by John Carpenter, which is also gory and was called a vomit bag movie, but I see that as more of a science fiction film, along with Alien by Ridley Scott.

The first " Man" she saw (other than the Dr.) was the Handsome Ast. she was instantly "wooed" by his good looks. Then she sees who she meant for, and it's not who shes chosen, or naturally drawn to. She screams in fear of the "monster" and looks for comfort/reassurance in the handsome ast. whom She is smitten by. A tragedy all its own, yet isn't that the way love goes...

Mike Salvucci Yeah, Tiffany basically watched all of the bride’s scene. Having watched “Bride of Chucky” many times growing up and just now taking the time to watch “Bride of Frankenstein,” I was a little sad that there was not much more to leave to my imagination when it came to seeing and experiencing more of the bride’s character. However, I still love “Bride of Frankenstein” and think it is a true work of art!

Frigging operatic! I love James Whale's direction in this climax--the camera swoops and tracks throughout the sequence, reflecting all the emotions of the characters. But, naturally, the dipshit Academy didn't give him a Best Director nod since 'Bride of Frankenstein' was considered just a low-grade "horror" film (a low-grade film that was one of the HIGHEST-grossing films of 1935.) Idiots.

One thing I find that doesn't get brought up enough with this scene is the musical score. From 0:53 to 1:12, the music is nothing short of mesmerizing. It gives you this eerie and haunting yet serene feeling. A genuinely beautiful snippet of music even if it's less than 30 seconds.

This movie was also sad for both the Monster and the Bride. The Monster wanted a companion - someone like him who could love him as he was and when he did meet the bride she hated him. From the POV of the Bride, it was all new to her - she’d just been brought back to life and had a new look and she needed time to adjust to being dead and things before they sprung Monster on her and it was no wonder she reacted like that.

i watched this for the first time just the other night, and gosh - the monster just wants to be loved and have a friend to give his life meaning, he just wants to know that he is capable of inspiring more than fear and horror, he’s given up hope of this from humanity - so he pins all his hopes on the bride, he believes that if she loves him he will no longer be alone, if she loves him he will not be such a monster because he will be with another monster - and then he tries to touch her, and she is horrified! she fears him, she rejects him! and this isn’t even her fault, she’s just been created, she doesn’t know anything, she doesn’t know him, she has no reason to love him - but he takes it as the final proof that he is unlovable, that he is a monster, and he decides that to live as an abomination without even getting to be loved is a fate worse than death! this movie’s so sad
