I have a mid 90s 2 channel Triple Rectifier Solo Head. The most unbelievable head ever made! For pure rock though I use my JCM2000.
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
JCM2000 has a particularly nice rock tone... many knock that amp, but IMO they don't quite 'get it'. And yes for the metal stuff the triple rectifier is really great. To be honest (and I did not mention this in the video) - that road king II in the video on channel 3 Vintage mode has just about one of the best lead guitar channels for rock I know of. Scarily the triple rectifier set just right can do that too. One of the reasons I bought this amp recently. And to this day Mesa Boogie are still selling rectifier derived amps. Quite incredible invention back in the early 90's. I don't really think the 'Badlands' amp is quite as good sounding really from what I see, somehow they let the 'IR' boys in to the scene :) But that's OK. The Suhr amp I looked at a while back had almost the same features as the Badlands - even to removing the speaker cable etc. it all makes me wonder who really did come up with that stuff 'first'. Stay safe.

Hi Tony. I have the Triple Rectifier myself. A real beast of an amp that I've still not quite got to grips with yet but I love it. A little heads up! The popping noise when switching channels is due to a relay in the switching. Unfortunately the footswitch won't resolve it. Not sure what can be done about the relay but I found keeping the amp on stand by, then changing through the channels will reduce the popping significantly. Hope this helps!
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
:) Great news... while they can be 'difficult' honestly... I know, they can also be a brilliant amp if a bit loud. But I'll be covering all of that in other videos. If you watch my video again you will see when I talk about the 'popping' a quick picture of what looks like transistors all in a row. I also know as you say there are relays... but as I understand it currently those little 'transistors' (which they actually are not) are contributors with the popping. You could well be right - I have to find a schematic with my engineer guy so we can solve all of that. Thanks for the info and I'm sure it's all going to be interesting for sure. The truth is, that the 'popping' for me personally won't be a problem, but there are probably loads of guys out there that it might. So I 'threw that in' as a point to cover if I can solve it. Thanks again for the info. Stay safe.

I know, some guys think that the simulations are a 'triple rectifier' but if you have really never experienced one of these the sim would be great. OMG... great to hear. Website is still there and STILL has that stuff re the TriAxis. The pre-sets are still there and can be downloaded etc. as they always were. Great to know you liked it all then. Triaxis was a brilliant product in the 90's and beyond and the 2:90 made it really be hard to beat. I remember going in to a GC in the early 90's and saw a rectifier amp for the first time. I had MK III, MK IV etc. so I was intrigued. I plugged in to that amp and honestly that sound at that time was a revelation (or revolution) to hear and I could not turn it off. Today they take it all for granted, but as you and I know that rectifier idea changed everything forever and it's been copied ever since. There is more on this amp to come - I have a 'fix' for the popping when you change channels that solves it once and for all, and also a close analysis of the foot switch circuit, which on this amp does not work... Thanks for watching, and stay safe!

My 2000s Triple pops as well when switching channels. I also have an issue when I use the spongy setting sometimes the channel switching will malfunction and it will get stuck between channel 2 and 3. Making a horrendous noise. Full power will resolve this issue. Also, if my amp sits for over a week without being used when I do turn it on, it hums badly on every channel for about 30 mins or so or I toggle the power on and off quickly it might go away. It's not a tube issue as it will do it with a new set in it. But, if I use it daily it sounds just fine! I guess she gets finicky if I don't give her attention! 😁

The reason some people do the bias mod, other than maybe wanting to use other tubes other than boogie tubes is because when you use the stock Boogie tubes(especially 6L6's) is because they are biased very cold. The EL34 setting is higher, and some people even run the 6L6's on the EL34 setting because it's biased hotter. I'm not advocating anyone to do that, but just saying that's what some people have done! But anyway, I agree that using the stock boogie tubes are totally fine, but I understand why some people do the bias mod, and I dont think it's a bad thing even just to be able to double check or make slight adjustments if needed. If yours has a bias pot already, that's not a bad thing IMO, and only gives you more flexibility in the end. But is it neccesary, no, not at all!
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
Well maybe they want different tubes brand and want to get the 'ultimate' thing going on Bias... I have heard about too hot and too cold in all Mesa amps of course but where are these? honestly I don't yet know, but a great subject because these triple rectifiers are getting on and while many guys literally never change tubes until they frazzle out, it's worth taking a look I reckon. I almost bought TAD (tube amp doctor) tubes, but I wanted to get the tubes that Mesa 'condone' if you will and that means their tubes. Who knows the maker? even maybe Chinese or whatever, but this way I just thought for this video might be the best way to look. Thanks for the info James... and make no mistake I'm listening :). Hang in there Tony, your my favorite reviewer and all your efforts are much appreciated! I'm so glad that your making this video 'cause the Dual or Triple Rec. has been on my bucket-list for over twenty years; and this is the year. I've narrowed it down to a Rev. G Dual or Triple or the first gen. Dual three channel. I'm not a fan of the multi-watt because it seems too fizzy to my ears. Also, I have one quick question: What are your impressions between the dual and the triple? I ask because it seems to me that a Triple cuts through the mix slightly better. Thank again! I'm already subscribed but I'll definitely like this video as well.
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Also for me seemingly the newer rectifiers seem a different tone and the Badlands is (just an opinion) plain different. Back in the day (early 90's) everyone was on the dual rec and I'm sure that continued as sales show - a very common amp. I was very tempted but at the time I was Triaxis and 2:90 amp. So I passed on the dual rec. Later (as I said in the video) I bought a triple rec in Daytona and shipped that to sunny (not) UK. The dual rec IMO is easier to get particular tones from, but the triple was a bit harder to get great lead guitar tones. Sure the rectifier 'sound' is there in both, but it was always harder to achieve the ultimate sound IMO from the triple rec. Here is what I thought back then when I bought it: tonymckenzie.com/triple_rectifier.htm and that was a pretty good reflection of the triple rectifier. This: tonymckenzie.com/triple_rectifier_in_use.htm covers the triple in use... and this: tonymckenzie.com/triple_rectifier_in_use.htm advises about power output and control thereof. This: tonymckenzie.com/triple_rectifier_loops.htm talks about the Mesa loops and what a pain they can be on the triple (or many other Mesa stuff) and this: tonymckenzie.com/triple_rectifier_bias.htm shows something about a mod for the bias that I worked on at the time. When you get the triple right it offers better headroom, but also a slightly different tone IMO and I combatted that with a pedal (read the sections of the time from the links). But to be honest I don't think you would go far wrong with either - but remember that 150 output... but you CAN remove tubes to reduce the output if you wanted to. Hope all of this helps. BTW this one is rev D if I remember correctly. Stay safe.
@thebostonguitarist78863 жыл бұрын
@@tonymckenzieofficial Thanks for the reply. Yeah I second the notion that a triple is harder to get a good lead tone out of; to me the top end seems nasally when I've demoed it at times. I also thought about the Badlander too, it seems decent in it's own regard but too different for me to think of it as a quintessential "Rectifier". I'm thinking of an older two or three channel Dual, once the corona price index comes down. I'm sure you'll be absolutely stoked to play the triple once it's up and running. Also, here is an interesting factoid that I just recently found out: the entire preamp section of a rectifier is a complete rip-off of a Soldano SLO100 even though it sounds nothing like one to me. It puzzles me how similar but so different they really are. Interesting fuel for thought! But again, thanks so much for your help Tony and good luck getting the beast up and running.
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
Do you think the prices are increased re corona? Personally I think there will be a reset of the music business of over supply of much gear - simply because guys need the money more than they need the amp. Here in the UK it's pretty hard work right now they have most of the pubs and bars either at half swing or closed... very sad situation. Somehow I really do think pricing will take a massive tumble in most music gear, but in guitarists stuff there is already a lot out there and I'm sure trends will be downwards on price. I have not heard that one before about the Soldano being 'ripped off in design' by Mesa? It sounds very different. I'm sure most companies look closely at the leading products and operate according to their needs though. And on pedals in general.. ha they're all 'similar' :) - Transformer arrived today and that from what I see currently is easy for us to do. They supplied the power transformer of the Multi-Watt because the original 240v PT's are long gone and not available. However the MW PT is a direct replacement so to speak. I also have the tubes now. Trouble is of course that the cost overall added around £650.00 to the amp price. I'm not bothered personally because I wanted to have a 'project' to work on and what nicer than an older triple rectifier Mesa as a choice. I'm looking for a few more bits but I'll fit the transformer first and show that but not too much detail as its pretty similar in most ways to the road king II that I did and that's online. Then the tubes and a look at that bias, then maybe the pops and then just aesthetics as I have maybe a few ideas for that which might work out. Anyway it will hit the channel here so maybe worth a look. For me its all great fun.

@@tonymckenzieofficial Yeah, in the States prices have gone up at least temporarily. 'I've been eyeing Rectifiers on Reverb.com for some time and older ones from little over a year ago were down to about a grand U.S for mint condition ones. Recently, the prices have gone up due to stimulus checks and a huge swath of people impulse buying. I imagine that a lot of excess gear will start to emerge down the road and like you mentioned there are people who will need quick cash in emergencies. So it's quite possible that once the lockdowns are over the market may shift. As far as the Soldano tidbit, yeah that totally shocked me too. I got it right from the horses mouth, check out this podcast: right at 2:17:00 you'll hear Mike Soldano chat with Dave Friedman on his podcast about it link@ kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zn_ChqOFmr56jNE. I received the recent guitar and amp price book just yesterday and in that book most guitars and amps have dropped in value. For example I owned a PRS Dragon III (completely unused since new in around 1994 and boxed) and was concerned to see that guitar had dropped in value dramatically. A year or so ago it was listed mint at $20k... and I think now its down to between $7500 to $10k. Guys talk about investment but its nothing but bull sh*t if the truth is known. The PRS Dragon III was $30k new and it levelled at $20k for many years... but now 1/3 the price. I'm sure PRS would not really like to see that in the headlines any time soon. Even the Dragon I is down to (maximum) $18k. From what I see currently 18K is the MAXIMUM of any PRS out there. But it's sort of all across the board. There are some exceptions. My Gibson Jimmy Page Les Paul of 1995 is held at $6500. Recto solo dual and triple between $1150 and $1400 (they say)... which seems about right as I paid £995.00 ($1300) but many are asking more. Thanks for the link re Soldano. I'm not really a fan of Friedman - I think his promotion is better than his gear from what I have seen (but that's just an opinion) but I tend to believe Soldano.

No! I don't have a dual rec! The top one is a triple rectifier and the bottom one is a Road King II. The Triple has the bad loop :( as they all are until the newest stuff. But there is a mod for it out there. The triple rectifier I had originally many years ago (maybe 2010 or so) - I later sold it but should not have. I like the road king II also because the channel 3 vintage tone is an excellent lead guitar tone in particular. But the triple can be coaxed to do lots. If you use a 'clean boost' in the loop it can make a substantial difference to the overall tone check it out. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

Hi Tony, The jury's out on the bias mod here. They are biased hot at the expense of valve life and Mesa tube sales profits 😉. I'd definitely leave it until you work out whether the fixed biased resistors are in spec, bias switch works and you can be bothered removing the board to replace them properly. Using colour coded valves to suit the bias voltage is an arse about method IMO. The fact it's had the mod done hints it was a valve eater and likely not got the original coloured valves in anyway.

Great point. And thanks for running through that. I certainly will be looking at that... on this refurb though I will be refitting the Mesa tubes simply because I want it spick and span :) and that bias setting (I don't know where it is currently) should be also worth the look as you say. KZbin's comments to me, were to 'suggest' that I should rewrite the title from something like 'Be shocked - the worst guitar... etc.' to something like 'How I made a guitar better...' or something like that. What that really said to me was that they wanted me to change the title maybe for their own reasons or HB reasons because it was getting loads of hits and showing just how bad that guitar really was. And you know what, I changed it and down went it's ratings. I changed it back again and guess what? it stayed low. My personal view is that the video did not violate anything (it really was the truth) but somehow it seemed like a form of carefully applied editing via the user channel from 'advice' they gave. When I look at channel XXX that might get 400k views on a particular (and really cr*p) video you have to consider how that is done. I can tell you the answer! Take every penny you make on your channel (and if there is little or no income then add some more money out of your pocket) and re-spend it right back to Google with 'promoting your video' and then it will be shown to viewers that would otherwise NEVER get to see your video. Monetize the video, then plough ALL earnings from that back in to promotion of more videos and so on and so forth. Who wins? Google or Google. The channel gains 'subscribers' and Google under its many names gains financially. Now sit back, take in exactly what I said, and realize that no one gives a monkeys whether someone views ANY video that is firstly monetized, secondly is not promoted as I said, and worst of all, creators can run around like fools at the beck and call of the paymasters. Over time, I am sure that you would gain subscribers as some I could name have with those 'massive' viewer counts, but ultimately it all boils down to whether that's the life or not for you (or indeed me). I cannot see ANY other factors involved in any of it. And if you really do go and watch 'I bought this guitar for $75 and its great' well best of luck with that because it probably was promoted to hell and back. You would have no problem finding it! It just shows that someone could create a really rubbish and misleading content and promote it so it all looks very different than the reality of things. And right there is the story of the internet! Of course that's just an opinion and it could be incorrect. Think about it. :) Stay safe.

@@tonymckenzieofficial I console my unknown self with the thought that both Ludwig and Vincent were basically unknown as well. Maybe in 100 years my channel will have 100 subscribers.

this is the bloody why non performing ''artists'' cant afford to justify tubes toys
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
Ha I don't quite understand really. But I think that non performing artists CAN afford tube amps... check my channel I have reviewed tube amps costing as low as £108.00 or $140 brand new. ANYONE that can't afford that and is at working age is clearly not in a job or in the wrong job IMO. Justifying the tube prices on this monster might be another story though! The UK price of the tube set from Mesa Boogie was around £380.00 or around $500 in the UK. I did note that the tubes fitted apart from one pair appeared to be the originals from 2002! Scary really. Merry Christmas and stay safe.

Not Mesa boogie Mesa engineering?? The studio 22+ combo was the shittiest amp I ever owned even a katana is far better
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
:) You're right... hey blame my English - we often call it 'messer boogie' which sounds almost rude... I trained (really) to say 'mayssah' (if you can guess what I mean). I never had a studio 22+ but most the stuff I have had was and is pretty cool. Triaxis and 2:90 were astonishing back in the day as was MK IV. Stay safe.... and thanks for the info
