I'm pissed off when there's no 'monster's den' like this one. the team excel at sorting good from bad - but with the added public service of recommending films so bad, they are reeeal entertaining. Chris Alo is pissed off, you witness a new kind of poetry woven into film criticism. Chris loves to vent, and we love his venting. Where did Pete find these blokes? Magic. Loved this! 👍👍✔✔

Evil Dead the original film is a Hell of a lot scarier than Dead By Dawn for sure, but alongside the former I don’t agree with that statement about it being the same movie. Army Of Darkness was totally different and more like a Monty Python type of genre a.k.a: medieval horror fantasy. A Nightmare On Elm Street remake however? I agree ☝️ 1980’s Don’t Go In The House scared the shite outta Me til the point where I had to sleep with my mom at age 13! Maniac kinda ripped this flick off a few years later when Joe Spinell’s character is surrounded by the dead women who he’s tortured and dressed in his mother’s clothes and the only thing that isn’t added; is that they’ve not been burned alive. Definitely worth seeking out though Pete and nothing like the usual low budget horror flicks of this period. Great addition with Jamie being added to your cast of characters btw! Sincerely, DJP Anal Cunt;Postmortem and Kilslug Sony; Earache 🇬🇧 Columbia and TAANG!! Records @ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Greetings 🖖 😅from Boston, Massachusetts Amerikkka quite naturally.. @@nealandrus6666They actually sort of gave the backstory in the original with the extra scenes that were included for the network television release. Zombie should've never messed with a classic. Men in Black: International (2019) My wife and I are very easily pleased. We love Matthew Broderick in "Godzilla". My wife calls it "a pizza on a rainy afternoon movie". We love the last Star Wars trilogy. Daisy Ridley is great. The trilogy (for us) is the journey of her character. We love all of the Star Trek movies. I cannot remember an episode of Dr Who that we both did not like. Enjoying things you watch has improved the quality of our life and we enjoy most things. However....we went to see "Men in Black: International" in a movie theater in southern Thailand. We really love the original Men in Black trilogy. What could go wrong? After watching the movie we walked out of the cinema in silence and my wife turned to me and said, "What was that?"

@DavysFlicks
@DavysFlicks Жыл бұрын
Some eps could be longer - I don't think we did any service to Hammer's Draculas in one hour because of people's schedules. But overall...YT algorithms tell you when people tune out, so an hour to 90 for a panel is pretty optimum. Solo? 20mins tops, bit longer if there's stuff to show. Kinda sad it operates like that but if you don't meet the algorithm, it doesn't promote you, your growth slows etc etc. I've done plenty of vids on my channel I want to keep talking on, but YT almost punish you for it. THey don't take die-hard cult fans into account!

Love this show. It might be difficult for Monsters Den as horror fans tend to be quite open-minded, but a cool topic (if it hasn't been done) could be "Films I love/respect but are a difficult sell to other people" so films like Last House on the Left.. another one would be "Local Hero," which isn't horror but is 40 years old today, and I will never pass up the opportunity to praise that film.

Great show as usual - always excited for a new Monster's Den! You guys are spot on with the Marvel stuff lately ... it's just too much. They took what was a cool idea of linking those first few films with the Avengers movie, and just drove it into the ground. It was getting difficult enough to make sure you saw all of the movies to stay up to date, but then they introduced the TV shows into the mix ... then came the movies that took place prior to the first few (i.e. Capt Marvel, Black Widow) and then this multi-verse BS... I'm at the point of just throwing in the towel on the whole thing. As far as the topic of the show - the only one that came to mind that none of you mentioned was the Lost In Space film from 1998. I had grown up watching the reruns of the original show and just loving it. When they announced the movie with the usually reliable likes of Gary Oldman & William Hurt (not to mention the foxy Heather Graham), I was all in. But sakes alive, it was completely awful. And funnily enough it seems to have been erased from existence .. unlike many of the ones you guys discussed, I literally NEVER randomly encounter it on TV. And for the best, I'd say.

Wanted to add another point to Davy saying Aliens is the same movie as Alien in that Alien is not entirely original itself. It's just a riff on the 50's sci-fi movie, It Came From Outer Space and Jaws (I believe they even pitched it as Jaws in space during production). It was the direction, cast, script, execution of the story and H.R. Giger designs that helped give it a new spin and made it a classic. As I mentioned in my other comments, Aliens does a lot of things new as we see the themes of motherhood (Ripley and the Queen Alien defending their "daughters" be it Newt or the Hive), her distrust of Bishop and the commentary on Vietnam. The alien creatures themselves are given a new biology update and they're still the same dangerous intelligent creatures from the original (see: the scene where they sneak from the ceiling or when the Queen silently tells her soldiers to stand down during the standoff with Ripley), so I'm not seeing how it's a simple mindless action fest. If anything it's Alien 3 that's just a retread of the original as it's doing the same setup - a bunch of people getting picked off by the creature in a enclosed setting - only this time we don't care about the supporting cast as much since they're all one-dimensional criminals and murderers. And they don't do anything new with the creature this time either!

I also remember going to that same Woolworth weeks later and getting a bunch of packs of Moonraker trading cards. I grew up on the Roger Moore movies,so he's always been my favorite Bond. Too Bad Timothy Dalton didn't stick around. And no Davy,I didn't like Die Another Day.I did like the idea of 007 being imprisoned and M not being able to help. Don't think I was EVER more pissed than after seeing "Alien 3". "Blair Witch": I couldn't believe it was a theatrical release! Regarding Superhero Movie fatigue: It's more CRAP superhero movie fatigue! There has not been good superhero content since "Endgame".

Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" Let me explain. You are talking about leaving the theater feeling angry. This movie is fantastic and the ending that Terry Gilliam wanted was perfect. However, when I saw it first, I thought that it was going to be a happy ending. It just broke my heart. In fact I seem to remember that I shouted "No" in the cinema. So much so that even though this is an absolute gem of a movie I have never been able to watch this again. So I got angry because of the movie ending I needed, not the ending that I wanted.

Yeah I loved Andor. At first it didn't interest me much (a show about a character from one of the movie spin-offs?) and the first 1-2 episodes were setting things up, but it won me over with it's great acting, political intrigue, character-driven drama and a good cast. While I enjoy the fun escapist fantasy of Star Wars with rebels vs empire and alien monsters, I can appreciate something different like they did here. It definitely made up for the disappointing Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi shows.

@@DavysFlicks I respect your opinion Davy, but I have to disagree here. I don't see how Aliens is a "dumb shooter" when it only features three major setpieces in the entire film and the movie takes a full hour before re-introducing the creatures. They spend time developing Ripley's trauma from the original, her chemistry with the supporting marines, her relationship with Newt and the new biology for the creatures. The way I see it is that Cameron knew that he couldn't top the surprise of seeing the Alien creature for the first time, so he went with a new approach by making an action movie. And since the good guys this time were highly-armed marines, they had to do something new with the title creatures themselves so I thought bringing in more of them and introducing a big "boss" alien (The Queen) was a genius move. I respect Alien 3 for what it tries to do and it has its moments (Weaver's performance and a great cast of British actors), but for me, it ultimately falls short of the first two because I just don't care much about any of the supporting characters (they're played by great actors, but the characters have no depth to them), the overbearing nihilism and they don't do anything new with the creature itself. I also can't get over the way they write out Hicks and Newt at the beginning because it makes no sense with what was established with the alien lifecycle in the first two.

I'm pretty selective about the movies I watch in theaters so I don't often go home angry, but I can definitely think of some that really ticked me off. The Desolation of Smaug. As soon it launched into that idiotic Scooby Doo chase through the mountain between Smaug and the Dwarves, I was done. I've never actually walked out in the middle of any movie, but that's the closest I've ever come. The Last Jedi. I grew up on Star Wars, and even through the prequel trilogy I never gave up hope of it becoming great again. I hated Last Jedi so much I haven't watched another minute of Star Wars material since. Honeymoon in Vegas. This is my earliest memory of walking out angry at the end of a movie (think I was about 13 or 14 when it came out). Everything about it felt it was specially designed to push my berserk buttons. Get Him to the Greek. This is very much not my style of comedy but my sister and brother-in-law wanted to see it and paid for my ticket, so I couldn't say no. They were laughing their heads off; I was mostly just rolling my eyes and waiting for it to be over. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Practically every change they made to the original story was a change for the worse, and don't even get me started on Depp's take on Wonka.

So David…you don’t like Aliens because you say it’s the same movie since it takes place on the same planet that a small part of the first one does, (which by the way, you could then say every movie that takes place on earth is basically the same movie now) even though there is no other similarities about them. Yet you do like Evil Dead 2…even though it is EXACTLY the same movie as the first one? Also, The Last Jedi is top tier Star Wars. Some days even better than Return of the Jedi. Jamie means Highlander 2 The Gathering. The Quickening was the subtitle given to a VHS release of the series pilot and a few other episodes spliced together. That’s what Dan was thinking of.

That Earth notion is quite the false equivalence! Distinct different though between your franchise comparisons- I'd watch Evil Dead 2 and not need to watch Evil Dead 1. I'm never not gonna watch Alien - the best of the films. So if I'm watching the best of the franchises? It's ED2 and Alien. I don't hate Aliens - I just don't get any value from it. It trades tension and atmosphere for explosions and quips. Alien 3 gets back to the grimy, depressing universe of the first film. And - this is classic sequel nonsense - "one monster was terrifying...let's have a hundred in the next!" And btw, we only have a few seconds to rebut, so it wasn't gonna be a discusion on air but surev- there's also even minutiae that are the same..if we go into the weeds:. Opens with Sigourney Weaver in cryo sleep waking up. Grunts eating is how we meet the cast. A drop ship lands on the same planet. An advance party investigates the same Engineer's wreck (Newt's family/John Hurt n co) They get a facehugger for their trouble Both have a secret plant of the company who wants a Xenomorph for the company. Both have androids who get wrecked. Ripley runs about with a flamethrower She uses it to torch one of her "friends" cocooned. Minimum safe difference must be reached by Ripley Not really dead, a Xenomorph secretly is on board the escaping ship.. Ripley suits up to defeat a xenomorph Xenomorph is blown out into space. Ripley ends both in cryosleep and with the same speech. So...yeah! Pretty similiar even in plot structure I'd say.

It is an action movie vs a horror movie which was the first one. However some of those points were going to in the movie regardless. I mean Weaver wakes up from cryo sleep in the third one too. And of course there was going to be a face hugger attaching an unsuspecting victim at the beginning. That was the whole point to establishing a colony on the planet. The company wanted an Alien to weaponized and that is how they were going to do it. Still don’t know which I would call my favorite. Probably the first. However, aside from a few similar story points that you mentioned, we are still talking about two very different styles and even genres of film. But you like what you like and we think what we think. For 29 April, 2023: Ok.. So.. I'm actually going to comment on this.. You Triggered me. Superman Returns.. I know all about it.. I Should.. I was an extra as part of the Daily Planet.. What started out as 20 days of work.. Turned in 3 months.. And I got 7 seconds of screen time.. I was hoping for 4 seconds.. And actually got 7. There is a drafting board shot.. With me leaning close into the drafting board with my long brown shoulder length hair.. There is a Whole other story to that which is ironic. So.. What should I start off with? Brian Singer is a very detached director. He is very impersonal.. The guy does not like to interact with his actors.. Which I thought was strange.. Actually the DP.. The DP was this pretty cool Hollywood guy who interacted with everyone.. Especially us extras(Background talent).. Also.. The other cinema photographer guy was very social with everyone and I spoke with him a few times.. He would actually direct us and the cinema photographers were fun to be around.. They were terrific with us. What did Brian Singer do.. Not much.. Not much at all. He didn't interact with anyone.. He would just be in a corner some where making demands.. I want this shot.. I want that shot. If someone made a suggestion for a shot.. Then it might take them 90 minutes to set up.. During which all us extras would fall asleep at out desks. What was it like to be on the set? Absolutely Amazing.. Incredible.. I was doing what I wanted to do.. On the way to it.. And the second AD was fantastic with all of us. But I'm Annoyed at the people in charge.. The producers.. But that's another story.. And I didn't realize until years later(It turns out I had a more compelling/engaging screen presence than Brandon Routh(Well Yeah.. Of course I did.. Then why didn't they give me some bloody lines? Kickstart a career for me.. As I said.. Whole other story.. Although at the time I was still somewhat immature to a degree and may not have handled fame that well.. Or as well as I thought I would.. At that time.. What do I mean by that? Ok.. I might have become quite cocky about it.. A bit arrogant about it.. Although.. I always say to myself now.. Be humble.. Be humble. It's a double edge sword). Brandon Routh.. Yeah.. Kinda quiet at the time. Respectful of everyone.. But the cinema photographers who were the real directors as Brian Singer did nothing on that set.. They had to really push Brandon to get that Superman energy out of him. James Marsden.. Good guy.. Quite sociable.. Respectful.. Considerate.. I was merely feet away from him a few times.. He is/was chilled and polite. Parker Posey.. She was interesting but didn't really interact with anyone to much.. And Unfortunately I missed the day on set.. A lot of us extras had a day off. Got to set the next day and the other extras informed us of the show down between Singer and Posey the previous day. They had had an indifference.. Then it escalated.. Then they started screaming at each other. One of us extra's the next day said.. You should have been here yesterday.. You missed it.. The big screaming match between Singer and Posey.. It was a whopper. About Kevin Spacey you ask? He was Interesting.. He had this demeanor about him.. Like a real New Yorker.. Kinda dark.. Mysterious.. Edgy. He looked a bit flustered and un interested to be on set after a 22 hour flight from New York or 12 hours from Los Angeles. I was star struck by him.. Very few other people were.. As many of the extras had no idea who he was.. But a few of my extra friends at the time did know.. And understood my reaction. I never saw him on set.. Only outside the set.. Like when you walk out from the studio door and into the other section on the studio lot. Brian Singer was walking toward us with some guys.. Spacey was standing about 20 feet away.. Looking indifferent.. I was star struck staring at Spacey but trying not to be obvious about it. I was in their way apparently.. One of my extra friends said.. Pat.. Get out of the way.. Quickly.. Then my extra friend yanked me out of the way.. And Singer bulldozed passed.. He would have knocked me flying.. Then Singer ran up and gave Spacey a huge hug. Then we got dismissed for lunch.. And I could barely eat.. All I could think about was Spacey is here.. Omg Kevin Spacey is here.. Omg. All the other extras couldn't have cared less.. They had no clue who he was.. Except for a few of my extra friends. I sat at lunch that day dumb struck. My friends there said.. Come on Pat.. Try to eat.. You need to get some food into you.. Big afternoon ahead. I've seen Superman returns a few times.. It's Ok.. Sort of.. I was so proud of it.. I actually bought it when it came out.. But I don't have that copy anymore sadly. Saw it at the cinema.. Yes.. I made a big deal out of it to everyone at the time.. Yes.. Was over the moon with my 7 seconds of screen time... Yes.. Continued on to do heaps of extra work after that in Sydney..(I should have been more aggressive at the time) And not just settled for extra work. It's ok.. Am writing my feature script at the moment.. Which I play the main character in and a bunch of short film scripts ready to go.. I play the main character in all of them. I had already done a lot of extra work before Superman Returns as my agent got me work all the time.. Albeit in some very inconvenient locations to get to. But I was annoyed and disgruntled at certain producers/people in charge on set of Superman.. But I was naive at the time of what to do about that.. Because I was just so excited to be there. This last sentence now is another EDIT abt 6 hours later.. As I have just looked up a clip from the movie.. "Clark returns to the Daily Planet" From 1 minute 18- to 1 minute 20.. I come into frame just under Brandon Routh's nose.. That is Handsome me.. I just got goosebumps watching this.

Great video. My worst theatrical experience has to be Halloween Kills. Was super hyped for it but ended up leaving the theater wondering what I had just witnessed. Terrible movie but one that I constantly try to enjoy but so far no luck.

Tremors: Shrieker Island (2020) I am easily pleased. If I like a franchise, it can do no wrong. I love, love, love the Tremors franchise. However, it is beyond belief to kill the main character. Now when I say "main" character I mean the only character that has been in all the movies. If you want to finish the franchise, fair enough, but why do it in such a mean spirited and pointless way. Who thought that this was a good idea? We need some names!!! FYI, I did not see this in the theater as I think it was not released in the cinemas (certainly not here in Thailand)

Spielberg's West Side Story... What a pointless reimagine of the original. A classic that should have been left alone.

* The most pissed off I've ever been at the cinema was while watching Last Night in Soho at a film festival, as the opening film no less. I just hated it so much, it rubbed me the wrong way in every single way. The characters were annoying, one-dimensional and sucky, I predicted the plot twist 15 minutes into the movie (during the first flashback). Usually when I predict things, something completely different happens, but here it went down the way I expected. The only saving grace for the film and the reason it got 2/10 (same as Birdemic: Shock and Terror) instead of 1/10 was Anya Taylor-Joy and some okay cinematography. During the second half of the film I was so appalled I was watching the side wall of the theater as much as I watched the actual movie. It was that unbearable. * Jurassic World also pissed me off. Friendly raptors, bland unlikeable characters, worse looking dinos than in JP. It shat all over the movie that made me a film fan, which obviously was the original. I can say the same for both JW sequels. Trash. Chris Pratt will never be even close to the actor Sam Neill is. * Red Letter Day. I watched it at the same festival as Soho, though 2 years prior, and the synopsis showed so much promise for a fun carnage-filled flick. Instead we got the most whiny, boring, shitty movie imaginable. Still better than Last Night in Soho though. * Tunnelen (The Tunnel). Norwegian disaster movie. It's basically the same as Red letter day. Whiny, boring and predictable. When movies try to force the audience to get emotionally invested in whiny obnoxious characters, it really rubs me the wrong way.
