10) Strawbs - Ghosts I first discovered the Strawbs when I heard their brilliant 1971 album From The Witchwood. I read in a music magazine that Rick Wakeman, whom I knew from Yes, had once been a member of the band, so I decided to give them a listen. What I heard on that record made me a fan for life. And for quite some time now I've been of the opinion that the Strawbs are one of the most underrated, and underappreciated Prog bands of the '70s. Ghosts from 1975 maintains the same attitude and atmosphere as the band's previous record Hero & Heroine, keeping up the symphonic Folk arrangements throughout the entire album. Song for song, it is possibly the strongest Strawbs album. The title track, an eight-minute-plus masterpiece of Symphonic Prog, that features one of Dave Cousins' most evocative vocal performances, is undoubtedly one of the finest moments of the band's career, and one of my all-time favorite Strawbs tracks. There is also a pair of extended Prog cuts in "Starshine/Angel Wine" and "The Life Auction", as well as two absolutely gorgeous ballads in "You And I (When We Were Young)" and "Grace Darling". The album's tracks alternate (at times literally every other track) between carefully constructed progressive pieces and shorter, extremely catchy melody-based artful Rock tunes, like "Lemon Pie", "Don't Try To Change Me" and "Changes Arrange Us". Alongside Grave New World, Hero & Heroine, Bursting At The Seams, and the previously mentioned From The Witchwood, Ghosts is required listening for any lover of '70s Progressive Rock. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights 7) Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise 8) Neil Young - Zuma 9) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! 10) Strawbs - Ghosts

Richie Blackmore's Rainbow Self Portrait became my favorite track
@jerryattwooll486415 күн бұрын
Today's choice is one I picked only a few weeks ago in the Favourite Debut Albums month, RITCHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. Ritchie's first collaboration with Ronnie sees most of Elf providing the remainder of the band here, before Ritchie decided to step things up for Rising the following year. It features two of Rainbow's most popular and stellar tracks in opener Man on The Silver Mountain and 16th Century Greensleeves. If the remaining tracks arnt quite up to that standard, the likes of Snake Charmer and even the Elf like boogie of If You Don't Like RocknRoll are enjoyable to listen to, being performed by some great musicians and the likes of Temple Of The King point the direction that Ritchie will eventually take and perhaps where his musical heart always truly lay. I do find Martin Birch's production to be a little polite and muted here in contrast to the huge sound he would get on Rising. Still, at the time a very promising debut and one that at least brought Ronnie into the metal limelight.

Day 10 is from a band that were successful pretty much everywhere except in The US. On The Level by Status Quo. The legendary "Frantic Four" line up; Francis Rossi on lead guitar and vocals, Rick Parfitt on rhythm guitar and vocal, Alan Lancaster on bass and vocals and John "Spud" Coghlan on drums. This was in the middle of a run of albums from Piledriver in 1972 to the magnificent live double Quo Live in 1977. Dismissed by critics as "heads down, no nonsense, mindless boogie", at that time, Quo were one of the most consistent bands on the planet. Number 1 in the UK, Top 15 everywhere else except America, who seemed strangely resistant to their charms. Opener 'Little Lady' sets the tone for some rollicking 12 bar blues. The album features Quo classic Down Down (a number 1 hit single in the UK) and the barnstorming cover of Chuck Berry's Bye Bye Johnny - a live favourite. A couple of miles from where I live, there's an apartment block on the site of what used to be a pub called The Wellcome Inn. There's a plaque on the wall announcing that in that very pub, Status Quo played their first ever gig with the above line up in 1967.

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is (obscene spoonerism alert) CUNNING STUNTS by CARAVAN. A British prog band from the Canterbury scene, and a favourite of another college friend of mine, Alan, although I think he played In The Land of Grey And Pink more than this one. As gadget has said, it was produced simultaneously with Renaissance's Schererezade (also coming up soon) by David Hitchcock. The two bands were under the same management at this time, and toured together in 1975. Alan and I saw them at Manchester's Palace Theatre. Terrific show by both bands, although Alan, who was less of a Renaissance fan, snoozed during that set! Shame! Favourite tracks The Show of Our Lives and one of their trademark long songs The Dabsong Conshirtoe.

Then Rock and Rollers a great rocker that I just love a whole lot. Then Broken Dreams another great rocker that kicks you in the you no what. Then Mariner a very wonderful ballad that love with that great piano and keys and singing . Sunday Morning with its hard rock heaviness and keyboards so brilliant and great. And singing and all the track I love. Then On & On and great rocker and such great of rock and keyboards guitars singing drums bass. All so great love it. Such great guitar playing and great soloing. 22. Roxy Music - Siren Is it possible for a Roxy album to be underrated? If it is, this would be it, as it's overlooked in favor of the admittedly superior first four albums. But it's still better than the more universally celebrated Avalon (1982). Rather than going overboard with sophisti-pop camp, this is a consolidation of their strengths, from radio friendly pop rock ("Love is the Drug," "She Sells"), art rock complexity ("End of the Line," "Just Another High") and rockin' glam ("Whirlwind"). In a bit of an off year for their peers, with Bowie and T. Rex dabbling in soul and funk, Roxy applied that proto-disco funk styling most successfully with "Love is the Drug." Day10-Robin Trower-For Earth Below. Great bluesy rock guitar playing by Trower. A lot of this album has a Hendrix vibe to it which I like. It’s only Money and Alethea are two of my favorites on this album. This on some days is my favorite Trower album.That’s my pick number 10.

Hi everyone, soon be the weekend, thank goodness... My pick for day 10 is, I think, the last of the fairly obscure ones for this month, depending on your point of view I suppose! We're actually off Down Under, to check out a band that, unfairly imho, is only really well-known outside their native Australia because of a single-only release of a cover version of one of their songs by a band that would go on to world domination. At home, they were huge: this album stayed at #1 in Oz for 11 weeks SKYHOOKS "Ego is Not A Dirty Word" Taking their name from 50s B-Movie Earth Vs The Flying Saucers, they were fronted by the charismatic singer Graeme Strachan (pron. "Strawn"), known as Shirley professionally, aided and abetted by guitarists Red Symons and Bob "Bongo" Starkie, drummer Imants Strauks (that isn't a typo!) and bassist/main songwriter Greg McAinsh. The band specialised in what I can only describe as a theatrical blend of 70s glam, pop, new wave and hard rock with lyrics that mixed social comment with tongue in cheek eccentricity. This can be heard on the likes of the title track, Smartarse Songwriters and All My Friends Are Getting Married, while more straightforward fare ups the rock ante with tracks like Love On The Radio, Saturday Night and Mercedes Ladies. It would be another 3 years, however, on the album Guilty Until Proven Insane in 1978 before they put out the song that provided them with slightly wider recognition when "Women In Uniform" was covered in 1980 by Iron Maiden for release as a standalone single, although it was added to the Australian version of Killers - as a nod to Skyhooks of course. PS I noticed yesterday that a few of my replies to people under my own article had vanished. Apologies if that was you, but I did reply, honest!

Hey Iain. first off, I'm delighted that this is your last obscure pick for this series. Maybe I can say something intellegent on your post for tomorrow. Second, I know as well as you that, "He who shall not be named" is out there joyfully plundering our comments.

Somewhere here in one of my desk drawers, I have a tattered, faded, folded-up old piece of note paper, upon which were scribbled various band names / albums, and which included "Skyhooks"....I suspect that may have been one of your recommendations from a couple of years ago Iain.....I dutifully carried that list of various obscure bands to the used shops...but never had a Eureka moment. But take heart!!.....i still have that paper, so will transcribe the contents of it, including Skyhooks, onto a new list!

Hi Iain, a band of whom I've heard if only because of the Maiden connection. Not really know much of their music or much about them, so I found your article interesting and informative. I guess they're a bit like The Angels, Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes and Little River Band, hugely popular down under but never made it much beyond cult status in most other countries.

#22 UFO - Force It I saved this for today which is Michael Schenker’s 70th birthday. 🎉 🥳🎸!! I hope it’s a good one !! It’s hard to believe that he was that great on this album at 20. But he certainly was. I have stated many times that I never heard of him or UFO until a few years ago when I started viewing Sea of Tranquility. When I hear an album as great as Force It; I wonder how it would have affected me back then. That I will never know…but I will try to review this album with as little hyperbole as possible…but that is impossible because it is so good that I can’t dial my joy down at all. Here goes… think of Jimi and Axis Bold as Love…Page on Led Zeppelin ll…Richie Blackmore on In Rock with Deep Purple…that is genius to me. Schenker’s solos are so varied and incredible as only the work of genius can produce. Using a Gibson Flying V with half a Wah petal and Marshall amps and a remarkable tone; each song has a shimmering beauty all its own. Going song by song : “Let It Roll” is a great lead off tune with a magical guitar sound. “Shoot Shoot” has a Leslie West guitar style to it. And it’s one of UFO’s signature tunes. “High Flyer” starts out as a ballad and here comes a stunning guitar solo. “Love Lost Love” has an awesome riff…crunchy and distorted with a lethal solo on top. “Out in the Street” is an epic rocker with a great lead vocal from Phil Mogg. Oh yes …and bass player Pete Way & drummer Andy Parker are here in full force. But this is essentially a guitar album. Michael simply dominates nearly everywhere. Guest stars include Chick Churchill on keyboards and James Dewar on backing vocals. It was produced by Churchill’s bandmate in Ten Years After …Leo Lyons. On side two…starts with “Mother Mary” with a Tony Iommi heavy metal style. Parts of side two leans toward heavy metal apart from the hard rock of side one. This tune has brutal bluesy aggressive guitars with overdub upon overdub. Mind blowing 🤯 “Too Much of Nothing” sounds like Pete Townshend on Live at Leeds…powerful and aggressive with A sweet solo with sustain reminiscent of Rory Gallagher. Great bass and drums on this song. “Dance Your Life Away” has a twin guitar sound that’s indescribable. I am starting to run out of comparisons and superlatives at this point. “The Kid’s(including Between the Walls written by Schenker)” is a very nice rocker with pretty keyboard flourishes. Michael plays a fast outro with beautiful tone. “A Million Miles” is previously unreleased. It’s a showcase for Phil’s powerful voice. Michael plays a pretty guitar solo here. On this 2007 remastered version I also have five live cuts that are excellent. I am so impressed with this guitar player. Michael Schenker deserves all the recognition he has received since he first came on the scene. I am late to the party…but I know greatness when I hear it !!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Another fine SoT selection. Personal pick today? The sixth studio album by this English progressive rock band released in July 1975 on various labels around the globe, the magnificently beautiful Scheherazade and Other Stories by Renaissance. This is the third year in a row this band has been on my list of 50-year-old favorites and, as mentioned in those prior posts, never really paid much attention to this band until finding the SoT KZbin channel almost 5 years ago now. This was one of the first bands you discussed that piqued an interest and for which I ordered an album. That was quickly followed by several more. Don't remember whether this was the first album ordered or not but this band just produces beautiful music and its singer, Annie Haslam, has an unforgettable voice perfect for their music. Four songs - three on side 1 and the 9 part "Songs Of Scheherazade on side 2. The entire album is a great listen and though it may not be my favorite of the band, it is one listened to quite a lot in the past five years and will remain so going forward, Likely won't live to have owned this album 50 years like many being picked this month, but this one deserves a spot on the personal list. Thanks, Pete. Not just for the daily shows but for constantly bringing bands and music to the attention of the viewers. Not the only band discovered by watching you and SoT. But certainly one of, if the not the actual, first bands discussed on the channel that grabbed the attention of this viewer. Looking forward to your next selection.

My Day 10 pick is an album released on March 24, 1975 and recorded on August - September 1974 at Caribou Ranch, Nederland, Colorado and produced by James William Guercio I'm talking about the seventh studio album by American rock band Chicago Chicago VIII.After five consecutive years of constant activity, the members of Chicago were feeling drained as they came to record Chicago VIII at producer James William Guercio's Caribou Ranch in Colorado in the summer of 1974. While the variety in styles explored on Chicago VIII were reminiscent of Chicago VI, this particular album had a more distinct rock feel, as exemplified on Peter Cetera's "Anyway You Want" (later covered by Canadian singer Charity Brown) and "Hideaway", as well as Terry Kath's Hendrix tribute "Oh, Thank You Great Spirit" and James Pankow's hit "Old Days" (#5). The ballad "Brand New Love Affair, Part I & II" charted at #61. Preceded by Lamm's "Harry Truman" (#13) as lead single, Chicago VIII was held over for release until March 1975 as Chicago VII was still riding high in the charts. While it easily reached #1 in the US, the album had a lukewarm critical reception - still commonly considered, by some, as one of their weakest albums from the original lineup, resulting in the briefest chart stay of any Chicago album thus far. It was also the first album to feature session percussionist Laudir de Oliveira as a full-fledged band member rather than merely a sideman, the first addition to the original lineup. Inside the original LP package was an iron-on t-shirt decal of the album cover and a poster of the band in a station wagon being pulled over by a policeman. On the RPM Canada charts, confusion endured when the LP was mis-identified during its chart run as Chicago VII; the catalog number listed proved it was really VIII. This album was mixed and released in both stereo and quadraphonic. In 2002, Chicago VIII was remastered and reissued by Rhino Records with two unreleased songs: "Sixth Sense" (an instrumental, or possibly a backing track) by Kath and "Bright Eyes" by Lamm, as well as a version of "Satin Doll" recorded for a Dick Clark's "Rockin' New Year's Eve" special - all as bonus tracks.
