I have read the meeting between the the narrator and Strickland in the bar hundreds of times. It always makes me smile!!!

An excellent narration. Possibly, the best I've ever heard. I intend to search for other audio books by the same narrator.

Thanks very much. This appears to be a LibraVox recording by a real human reader, who is very good, and not AI. The image also appears to not be AI, which is a nice change. Very well read,!

So amusing that WSM gets the Van Gogh character quite wrong. At the time of writing the Paul Gauguin character was perceived to be more important because the critics at the time were French. To now own one of those bad paintings by Van Gogh. The story is wonderful.

This description of Strickland leads to the question. Can one produce profound art if one is not in the least capable of profound thought or ideas?
@cacambo589 Жыл бұрын
Since "profound art" is a matter of taste or opinion, the answer must be yes.
@granthurlburt4062Ай бұрын
If he produces profound paintings, he has profound ideas. He doenst express them in words, that's all. And I imagine there are great writers who arent good conversationists too.

Thank you. Presently I’m re-reading my battered old much-loved copy, and Termin Dayan’s voice, after savouring this poignant narration enriches every nuance that Maugham conveyed. Miss Jenny

I don’t think Strickland’s life was worth this much narrative. Not Maugham’s best tale. 😢
@granthurlburt4062Ай бұрын
It is for millions, including me, among his best. You do know this is an adaptation of the life of Paul Gaugain., Also an excellent rendition of the life of someone who breaks from convention to follow his star, and at a time when it was much rarer more risky. No welfare or unemployment insurance then! He provides accurate portraits of the people around him and their mistaken assumptions about why Strickland left his middle-class life. He didnt care that his fellow students thought little of his work. The bold mind of an original artist who abandones a safe life to risk being a painter.
