I totally agree with your assessment of the Mora Garberg. I have the carbon version and all I can say is that Mora hit it out of park with this one. Value for the money it can’t be beat.

@TheDavewatts
@TheDavewatts 10 ай бұрын
@@wolfpacak47 If it helps I bought both as in England we get a lot of rain, my thinking was to use the SS version in winter and Carbon summer but to be honest I continued to use the SS version continuously as I love thee knife so much, for me it's perfect. If you live in wet conditions I think it's the way to go, I personally never use my knife to strike flint and never have had to. It holds a great edge and sharpens up great.

@@TheDavewatts I've heard that in the UK it's illegal to carry knives at all? Or is it possible in certain circumstances? I'm just curious.
@TheDavewatts
@TheDavewatts 9 күн бұрын
@JugerGaijin It's legal if you have a good reason for carrying it, your safer to carry one on private land were you have permission to be on. It's ridiculous here to be honest I think most people who practice bushcraft or survival take the chance of going to the woods hoping not to get caught in possession of one. Not good. Legally you can carry a none locking knife that's under 3 inches, technically it's illegal to carry a bacho folding saw because it's classed as a locking blade if I'm not wrong.

Hi. I must say your reviews are very thorough and reliable. There's one thing I tend to disagree though, and this is the mentioned low/medium edge retention. If you compare it to the powder steels, it's of course true, but comparing to the standard ingot casted steels, this is one of the most premium ones in terms of edge retention and easiness of sharpening. It gets sharpen almost as easily as mora's carbon, but holds an edge much much longer. I have also compared this steel to my custom knife made of the tool steel 80CrV2 (rope cutting), and sandvik was slightly better even than this.

@@AlaskanFrontier1 My opinion is that it's very well balanced in terms of edge retention and ease od sharpening. I had for example Cold Steel Master Hunter in San Mai III with VG-1 (little brother of VG-10) and Garberg keeps an edge significantly longer. Besides as you said, ergonomics, robustness (PA glass fiber filled handle is simply indestructible) and versitality is great. In this knife you can really see decades of knife using experience gained at Mora and put into this blade.

Excellent essential review, precise, advice and arguments that I find very accurate. I have the same feeling after using the Garberg very often in the forest. Some people on KZbin unfortunately tend to repeat the same thing about the Garberg. Finally here a review which gives a fair enough opinion compared to my experience. Or what has long been thinking about this excellent knife. An opinion that is not afraid to tell the truth. Very good review. Thumbs up.

Nice review. I originally wanted one with the leather sheath but the issue you highlighted put me right off that idea. So I just ordered a garberg but with the plastic sheath. I also opted for that one because I plan on getting the 'survival kit' with the sharpener (which I doubt I'll ever use) and the firesteel (which I very likely will use). It looks like a really solid piece of kit when that's included. The mora firesteels are also really good quality... as good as the light my fire ones IMO. I'm not a bushcrafter or survivalist... I'm just a hiker/backpacker and I only need to use a knife quite infrequently, but it's nice to know I have the option if ever needed and with the add on kit I'll know that I'm always going to be able to sort a fire out if I need to. So all in all the perfect option for my needs.

@Darrenski
@Darrenski 6 ай бұрын
I went with the basic slim plastic sheath because it can squeeze into almost any space in your pack. That isn't much of an issue in the states where knives are no big deal, but here in the uk it's always a much better idea to not display a knife period. Of course that's dumb but such is the nature of the situation here.

My Garberg is a year old and has seen little use. The reason is that I don't feel comfortable with the handle (shaped like a piece of soap), I might try to build my own someday (hopefully my scales will be better). What I really like about it is the simplicity. In that it reminds my of Fällkniven's F1. But the Garberg comes at a reasonable price, the F1 is good, but priced way too high.

Maybe you should try puting a piece of inner tube around the handle. I've heard a few garberg owners saying they have done this and that as well as providing more grip it apparently keeps it in the (plastic) sheath more securely.
@alexandergutfeldt1144
@alexandergutfeldt1144 3 жыл бұрын
@@darrenlamb5640 Solid tip, I agree! I've applied inner tube to the handles of some of my too slick, and thus IMO dangerous knives. My beef with the Garberg's handle is its soap bar shape, not the finish. It is round in places where my hand needs it to be flat and therefore develops a hot spot when I use it for feather sticking ...

If you ask me, it really is. I've never seen a mora break, even cheaper moras were able to handle batoning and hard abuse. If you are willing to spend the money on the garberg, it's certainly worth it. If not, a cheaper alternative would be the bushcraft black. It's a carbon blade so it needs more attention than a stainless. Hope you find this useful!

The plastic sheath also has the option of fitting what mora calls their 'survival kit' (around £/$20 at this time) which is basically a firesteel holder and a diamond sharpener. The sharpener is probably a bit naff but the firesteel is a definite win. A great piece of kit with that included IMO.

great video. there will always be better knives, but that doesn't make this knife BAD. i hear people complain a lot about how over-hyped this thing is, but i think that's coming from steel snobs that have multi-thousand dollar collections. as far as survival and bushcrafting goes, this thing is cheap enough that if i find myself needing to use this thing, i won't have to cringe whenever it get scratched or beat up. i heard someone say that a 1911 is better than a glock, but they still carry the glock for self defense. reason being, if they actually have to use it in self defense, it's going to get confiscated, and who wants a $2,500 1911 to get taken away???? kind of similar philosophy with this knife. ohhh there's other knives that are better!!! ya, but that's always going to be the case. but this knife 100% can get the job done, perfectly fine, without breaking the bank.

Most dedicated bushcraft knives don't have guards. Guards tend to hinder using them in certain grips. Bushcraft knives more usually follow the pukko style handles so that they are more versatile and usable in a variety of different grips. Plus it is very unlikely that it will ever be used for stabbing so a guard is unnecessary really.

John, the Garberg is a little heavier duty and, imho, has a little more versatile (although admittedly a hair less comfortable, in certain positions) handle. To be honest, it’s a backup knife I carry to my cheap Moras. To me, they are more usable when doing any fine wood work, as they are more nimble and cut a little better. If the lighter weight cheapo would happen to break (I’ve only snapped a tip off once), I have a the stronger, heavier Garberg as a backup. Just my 2cents. I’d get the Garberg, compare how you like it, and gift/sell the other or use it as a lender.

Terrible sheath on this otherwise very decent knife. Makes no sense. I would go out and spend $30 for a nice leather Condor sheath. And, and .... there are other bushcraft knives out there in the $80 range. Aforementioned Condor (many to choose from), Joker Tamparo, or maybe spend a little more and get a Castrom or LT Wright and get a really good sheath along with the knife. Mora is not the only game in town. Except for super affordable stuff, for which they are unsurpassed.
