There's a subtle character arc with Miller. He's never really been a Belter. He's live in the belt all his life but all he's been was a city cop on Ceres, not trueltly a Belter. Then he sees Julie, this snot-nosed, rich bitch who literally put her life on the line for the belt, being more of a Belter than he ever was. The scene of him infront of the mirror was him reevaluating his priorities in contrast to Julie, and deciding to become a better Belter.

You guys nailed a lot of what makes this series so great in this episode - how well fleshed out and real characters feel, even minor ones, and how the show never talks down to the audience. It trusts you to put things together without feeling the need to hit you over the head, or mix in petty drama for the sake of ticking boxes. It's the intelligent, adult, well written scifi show I waited 50 years for. I hope we see its like again some day.

18:22 Great point. I feel like too many show writers these days interpret "adult" or "mature" as their shows having lots profanity, nudity, and sex. They forget that adult/mature can also mean tackling issues and themes in a grown up manner, presenting the audience with serious questions and moral dilemmas. Maybe these questions and dilemmas aren't given a straightforward answer, but left with the audience as food for thought.

Not just Holden puts his trust to Amos. There is more important thing about Amos, even if it was briefly mentioned. When he talks to Miller, it's clearly that Amos trust to Holden. And that's the way he trusted to Naomi earlier. Amos doesn't trust himself to do morally good thing, so he looks for somebody who will tell him. Now it's Holden.

20:54 Well, it wasn't only that she was telling a civilian/terrorist/foreign head of state (depending on who you ask) that her government was lying to the public, but mostly that she, as a member of government was contacting this person in a way that could not be traced and was not known to the security apparatus. Imagine if it was revealed today that the Associate Minister of National Defence (although according to Wikipedia that spot is vacant at the moment?) was just trying to covertly contact Vladimir Putin personally without it being known to any other members of the government or the Security Services, to talk about a topic that could lead to war between Canada (afaik you're canadian?) and Russia. People would be calling for them to be removed from office and charged with treason. Now put all of that in the context of an interplanetary three-way cold war cranked to 11 and you have people hanging for stuff like this.

The writing in this show is SO so good. Every character is distinct and evolves not only with the situation but also with the interactions with others. Even with someone that has as complex a backstory as Amos, you never get it as a simple flashback. You have to piece it together and puzzle it out. Is not something you will get from Disney.

One of the reasons why the Characters are so interesting is obviously the books, but the books themselves are based on the tabletop RPG the author created with his friends, Season 1's Shed, the Cant crew member that lost his head was apparently a player that left the group and well... A constantly recurring theme in this show is how people always make stupid decisions when they act without thinking. People are quick to respond with fear and violence when facing a situation we don't understand or can't control. And there are many clashing ideologies in the world of The Expanse, fighting to be heard. The philosophy and day-to-day concerns of an Earther, a Martian, and a Belter are so different that they have a hard time understanding one-anothers' life experiences. And that kind of division leads to more fear and distrust, which leads to the 'othering' of people of the out-group. When in reality, we're all part of one enormous tribe, and we should all be on each others' side. Also, you guys are gonna hear this a lot from me on your upcoming videos, but Bobbie Draper AKA "Gunny" is a literal war goddess. Like, she is the divine essence of the perfect warrior. I simp hard for Bobbie Draper. Your guys' reaction to Amos' line "You ever talk to a pedophile?" was pretty priceless too.

Another part of why the show works as a translation of the books is that the book writers are in large part the ones writing the scripts for the show. And they are willing to make changes to things they wish they would have done different in hindsight in the books but didn't. There is a lack of ego where they realize oh shit, we can do better with this part or this part. Drummer is one of those changes. She wasn't as prominent in the books, but when the writers saw how good Cara Gee was portraying her and how cool she could be,, they were like, 'we gotta find a ways to use her more.'

Love how you explained the adult relationships and interactions on this show. So true. Yes, having to spend more time with Diogo would be a LOT too much. Having to listen to that "music" would drive me crazy...and it is a really weird way to understand that it is the moaning of dead people being killed little by little by the Protomolecule. Yuck! Cara Gee who plays Camina Drummer, is so good as Drummer. Marie and I love her Belter accent. If you ever hear her real accent, you'd be even MORE impressed with what she is giving to THIS character. This is why all the Star Trek reboots are so terrible. Your watching people that look like adults in highly critical military positions handling their problems like 12 year olds.

So if Cumberbatch's Sherlock was a 'high functioning sociopath' does that make Amos a 'medium functioning sociopath'? Don't get me wrong, I love Amos as much as anyone; just wondering.

Neither are sociopaths. If you go through a list of sociopath traits you'll find Amos only fits a few and is the exact opposite of several.

Nerdy you should go and read or even listen to "The Churn" its "Amos" back story. No spoilers for the show at all as it takes place 10-15 years prior.

Uh, no. Part of the fun of Amos' character is peeling the onion of his backstory layer by layer. It's an experience new viewers find compelling. You're suggesting they make it into a glass onion...

Love this show, but the way they treat "marine" and "soldier" as interchangeable is infuriating.
@AngeloBarovierSD
@AngeloBarovierSD Жыл бұрын
This is an American issue which is not universal. "Soldier" has long been a catchall term for someone who serves in the military (giving rise to euphemisms and adages throughout the ages). Historically, the first distinctions from that came with naval service ("sailor" or "mariner") and then air service ("pilot" or "airman"). With the advent of naval doctrines, the notion of armed fighters assigned to ship and shore duties became standard and those eventually became "marines". Largely, though, marine elements were either navy or army regiments. Relatively few nations carved out a marine column or a Marine Corps. In fact, the various names assigned were translated as "naval _infantry"_ or "naval _soldier"_ across history. The fact is, the majority of the planet view military people with guns as soldiers, regardless of their branch of service, unless they are specific famous roles (aircraft pilot, ship's captain, etc.). And, in the most general definition, people are right. A soldier is a professional member of a state military, in it's broader definition. Alas, American culture deifies military service and y'all get yer panties in a bunch when people don't use the "correct" American appellation. But in the end, a Marine is a soldier even if they're not a Soldier (note the capitalization). Eg.: "Be a good soldier" is not a phrase which only applies to members of the Army. TLDR: Regimental titles are fine to police but using "soldier" as a catch-all term, especially in colloquial expressions, is widely-accepted by civilians worldwide.

And you also brought up something that bugs me a little. I don’t get the impression that Naomi and Drummer are / were sexually intimate. I took it as a friendship that was quick to evolve due to their shared background as Belters who have risen above their humble backgrounds. This seems like a popular interpretation, as in they were bumping uglies, but it didn’t land for me. Anyone else?
@tonycamas9747
@tonycamas9747 Жыл бұрын
I don't think from this episode you can see much but a budding friendship. Is it possible more went on than what we saw? I suppose, but I think if they wanted to show those two falling in love, or even lust, I think they would have shown it. Regardless of the cultural norms in place, the likelihood that Naomi and Drummer would have done anything other than dance together at *this* point seems slim to me. But I don't think people who see something between the two characters are saying it based on this first encounter. As to whether something like that develops later on, I don't think it's possible to predict at this point; we don't even know if they'll ever see each other again. There may or may not be something to discuss about this later, but not right now (at least, not without spoilers).
@Erithacus
@Erithacus Жыл бұрын
It was clearly only a friendship (and it was like that in the books but with a different character). One thing I love about this show is that it doesn't sexualize everything everyone everywhere. The writing is too good for that. Even the main romantic story is not in the foreground, but somewhere in the background. And people are crazy with shipping everyone. I've seen people who shipped Moomin and Snufkin (if you know Moomins). As for later events which are spoilers it's still very subtle.
