The books are so good man. Bobbie is my 2nd favorite character in the books next to Amos, especially in the last 3 books… I didn’t absorb her “show” character that much but fuck man, the book version is just so much more capable and fear inducing than show Bobbie delivered. But I know making a show involves a TON of production constraints If the genre was 9 (it could even be 3 trilogies) sets of movies, instead of a tv series, I think there would be much more similarities to the books than there are otherwise. I listened to the audiobooks so there is some performance bias there, but even Avasarala in the books is “more” than Shohreh’s adaptation. Much more.

The UN on this show isn't remotely American, other than the accents. Chinese people are already trying to learn English. Since you said to do something nerdy tonight ... I only just realized that, if they're leaving from around Ganymede at 1G, it'd only take a few hours to reach Io. Less than 6h on a straight path, but obviously moons move and Jupiter might be in the way, plus the books usually have they're default thrust around 1/3G, but it's more like a roadtrip than a cruise. The book doesn't have the same time constraints, since the show cuts a trip to Taiko. But if they didn't even leave Jupiter's heelsphere in the show, they have, like, a day to fit in everything that happens in the next few episodes, without as much breathing room. I mean, they pull it off. Travel times are a lot more handwavy in the show than the books, just due to the demands of the medium. Still, now that I'm thinking about it, the Rocinante never leaving Jupiter does feel screwy in terms of the intervening space opera shenanigans.

The problem is there is not one belt. Lots of different belt factions and stations - they are the Outer Planets Alliance for a reason. As opposed to Earth and Mars which pretty much occupy a single point in space, whereas the belt civilisation is spread out over vast distances (of mostly empty space). Distances large enough to cause light speed communication delays.

They have normal gravity. The ships usually fire their engines to accelerate at 1G until half-way to their destination then flip around and decelerate at 1G for the rest. That way they have normal gravity for the entire trip.
@squaddie67
@squaddie67 Жыл бұрын
Most of the time they accelerate at 0.3G, not necessarily for comforts sake but to conserve reaction mass. Yes the MCRN will fly at 1G so the Marines can train in the event they were ever to invade Earth but that isn’t the norm. Belters will often accelerate to speed and then coast so they are on the float until it’s time to decelerate which is born of a need to conserve reaction mass because that stuff costs and not every rockhopper can afford to burn constantly.

Hi Kids, In the Expanse, space ships are depicted as nearly always under acceleration. Somehow, they have solved the problem of being able to carry enough fuel to allow for constant thrust from the engines. This provides the crew and passengers the effect of being in gravity. Boinking, is therefore conducted under gravity-like conditions and grav boots are not in the mix. Remember, the space ship is not laid out like an airliner, but is instead a multilevel building - rather like a brownstone or town house. If seen as a cut-away view of the Roccy "in flight" the crew would seem to be standing sideways when compared to a similar view of a Boeing 727. While you are too young to remember the Apollo missions, surely (Don't call me Shirley!) you must have wondered why it took three days to travel the relatively short distance (quarter million miles) From Earth to the Moon. The reason is the lack of fuel. The Saturn rocket pushed the Apollo module into space and the module simply "coasted" for three days before getting snagged into Lunar orbit. - sj
@kirkdarling4120
@kirkdarling4120 Жыл бұрын
Thanks to the Epstein Drive, they are able to maintain acceleration most of their travel time. Thus, they've got thrust gravity most of the time for boinking. Avasarala is supposed to be Indian. The Secretary-General is Sorrento-Gillis, who may or may not be American. There's no reason to conclude Nguyen isn't Vietnamese. There are a few other non-Anglos in the room who might not be American. I had to skip over those few seconds of Errinwright lying to Sorrento-Gillis about Avasarala. I always have to skip over that part. Yep, Avasarala has the only evidence against Errinwright. I think powered armor movement _ought_ to look a little video-gamey. The movement shouldn't be perfectly fluid. Cara Gee, playing Drummer, is actually a cheerful, bubbly person in real life. In the book, Bobbie has the line, "In my armor, I'm a goddamned superhero." I think that line was too much on-the-nose Ironman for television. You find yourself liking Bobbie now. Everyone also thought in the first three episodes of season 1 that Amos was just a meathead. So, never be surprised at how characters develop in this show. Book two ends at the middle of television season 3. The last half of season 3 is the whole of book 3...it runs really fast.

"there's one belt" No, actually there's not. That's a large part of their problem. The belt is a collection of loosely connected factions separated by immense distances. You are absolutely not automatically in bed with Dawes just by being a belter. He is a leader in a powerful faction, not a leader of all of the belt.

In the books, Sadavir Errinwright is a British-born man of middle-eastern descent. So brown skin, dark hair, British accent. So the UN is less American in the books.

Considering the UN is incapable of doing it's one job of maintaining world peace (easier said than done, I know), idk if it will even be around 100 years from now. It completely let us (the US) fight an illegal war (one that I had the misfortune of being a part of), which was just another in a too long list of precedent setting military campaigns that encourages other powerful nations to do the same. As we see currently. I could see the UN either going the way of the League of Nations *or* maybe even BRICS+ nations going their own way to act as a counter balance to the west by starting their own diplomatic alliance since our current route isn't working obviously. As far as seeing these other actors in other stuff, this cast is so phenomenal, I too would love that. I wanted that for _Breaking Bad,_ but for whatever reason we rarely see that. Outside of Cranston getting some main roles, _Community_ having some BB cameos and Aaron Paul popping up in random things periodically, we don't really see much of the BB cast. Do they even have to work again ever? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Chinese and Asian representation is higher in the belt and on Mars, specifically. The reasoning (as well as Alex's Texan accent) is that a lot of land was reclaimed by the UN in the climate emergency and the people who most felt that decided to take their chances on Mars and in the belt.

No behind-the-scenes stories from me except to say I used to have some wicked shots of the Razorback set. …and then I spilled beer on my phone, did all the wrong things to resurrect it, and that phone is now bricked. So, those shots are gone forever (no cloud backup to prevent leaks in case there was a data breach). Anyway, always back-up your files somewhere, kids. Don’t be me!

The Drummer character is not actually in the books. She is an amalgamation of a few different characters that exist in the books but not in the series. Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham who wrote the books under the pen name James SA Corey both participated in the writing of the series with Ty actually being in the writers' room for all seasons. In interviews, they discussed how they saw the series as an opportunity to change a few things that they thought they could have done better in the books but by in large the story you see on the screen is the story you read in the pages. So you don't get that jarring shift in storytelling as you did in Game of Thrones when the series passed the George RR Martin source material.

Alex has always wanted to be a pilot and more importantly a combat pilot. And as much as he loves his family he loves being a pilot more. It’s similar to Soldiers that do constant deployments overseas because it feels “normal” to them. It’s sad in a way.

I think the suit movement being a bit "videogame-y" and jarring, is because it's not like human smooth movement, it is pistons and joints and stuff moving in a robot way that respond to Bobbie's actual movements.
