My high-school chorale teacher took us to hear this chorale because we sang "Elijah Rock" for competition. What an amazing treasure. Moses came out shook our hands and personally spoke to me. It was like I was speaking with a great uncle. A wondrous soul. This song is ingrained into my bones and DNA

I wish I had the tape to show you that my high school choir sang it better! And in not starting this because of my talents (or lack there of) but because we had one of the most talented instructors of all time!!! Mrs Lloyd taught two generations of the Winnans! If you don’t know who they are google them. Not only Grammy award winning artist but many say angelic voices straight from God. #gifted PS My high win awards around the globe and a few actually perform operas currently across continents

Moses' passion, musicality & arrangements ignited the re-engagement with the Negro Spiritual in the wider musical community. It was thrilling to see it happen, from the first CD in the late '80s through the singularly brilliant performance at ACDA in 1995. Even if "Elijah Rock" had been his only arrangement he would stand as the heir to Hall Johnson, both premiere exemplars of conveying the sweeping expression of humanity that is the Negro Spiritual.

I believe that any means of keeping the spirit of Moses Hogan and his music alive is a blessing. Spirituals are a way of story telling and in many ways, we are offered a glempse into the lives of those who suffered through slavery. The main theme behind the spiritual is sufferage and the love of God. That being said, if we can touch and inform more lives through the singing of spirituals, then I think that is wonderful.

Much youth of the day has no idea or appreciation of this art or where it stemmed from. Spirituals are unique to the past lives of Africans, African Americans, and blacks; however, Art is Art and it is here for us to appreciate and learn from; white, black, etc.

A reunion concert was planned for this year (2007) Moses' 50th birthday. However, many of the members were unwilling to cooperate. It was a very unfortunate time. There were a FEW who tried very hard to make it happen.

@ajcooper2008 he's probably singing the alto 2 part, actually. i sing A2 in our school's chamber choir with this song and the part goes quote low. most likely he's a T1 who was put on A2 just for that section.

It speaks a lot to the human race we sing at all. We took a valve (the larynx)designed to close to allow food to slide to the esophagus and open to allow air into the lungs. We close the vocal cords and force a steady stream of air through it keeping the vocal cords at very precise tension. This causes flapping of the vocal folds, starting the sound in motion. Vibrato comes about from this mechanism, while the rate regulation comes of the electrical impulses from the brain to the muscle.

I heart this song. Those T1's better sing "Hallelujah Jesus"!!! 4:22 You see their heads moves down with the notes?????? #LoveIt. And is it just me or the A2's are slowing every1 down with their "Rock Elijah" and/or the Sopranos' "Comin Up, Lordy" is being rushed. the end started getting a lil crazy as far as timing with the women's parts.

No, you can't. You might not be particularly sensitive to the tension, and may not understand the subtle differences unless you're a voice teacher or high level singer. However, vibrato from the human voice is simply a byproduct of what is known as the "Bernoulli Effect", which allows humans to sing in the first place. Simple physics and biomechanics.
@SuperDaveOkie
@SuperDaveOkie 16 жыл бұрын
I couldn't disagree with you more. It would be totally inappropriate to have sung this without vibrato, and would not properly tune with a straight tone. The vibrato is a natural occurring phenomenon in a voice free of tension. Tension has to be added to take it away, and it screws up the overtone series and resonance.
