Wow!!!! Your analysis is so spot on and quite frankly has me in tears….happy tears as I reflect on my Moses Hogan Chorale family. We’ve lost so many members over the years but you have honored us all by your appreciation for the attention to detail and the brilliance of our Artistic Director. Thank you from one of baritones in the video!!

What a phenomenal and influential group and legacy you were blessed to be a part of and share your gift with the world. The musical precision and technical skill you all executed in your presentation is nothing short of amazing and inspiring. One of my favorite arrangements the late Mr. Hogan created. Continued success and blessings in all you do, kind sir.

Yes. One of my favorite choral arrangements from the late Moses Hogan. The harmonic and rhythmic complexity Mr. Hogan constructed with this arrangement is a testament to why it still is an exciting piece for choral groups to sing perform nearly 30 years since it was first arranged and released.

This video is a classic. My undergrad choral director is singing tenor in the Chorale in this video, S. Carver Davenport (Dillard University Concert Choir). So glad you analyzed this. What a treat!

Hogan was a legend this piece..I did Battle of Jericho and My Soul Been Anchored Also the altos with the low E don’t get enough credit in this piece
@WilliamDobbs-se8wu8 ай бұрын
I agree. One of my favorite sections in the arrangement (the "bridge" section), with them singing "if I could I surely would stand on the rock where Moses stood..." sustaining those low notes the way they do. The Alto II's/contraltos really bring out that section and towards the end of it, as you mentioned...of them being stretched to the low E, hitting baritone-esque notes there to round out the four to five part harmony for the rest of the sopranos and altos in the line "where Moses stood", culminating that section in a haunting doubled octave unison as the Bass II's lead in the next section for everyone to carry out the remainder of the arrangement to its bombastic conclusion.

When I tell you this is a choral classic I LOVE THIS SONG! Then we sped it up!! And sung it a key higher. I was 1st tenor the first year we sung it . By 12 grade I was baritone.

Yes. Most definitely love how this arrangement stretches the Alto II's/contraltos into the baritone register. I love the darkness, color and haunting nature those low notes give to the 2nd altos.
