apparently food eating is huge when it comes to levelling up in this game, so eating rations all the time actually sets you back from what i hear. Im kind of put off by that since it would require a lot of micro managing when it comes to farming/ cooking and stuff, which i wouldn't mind but it's kind of a hassle for me.

and rations are used for fast travel... good for a emergency but.. not the best solution

I haven't played elona but it has a lot more in the housing department and settlement management + a very crafting deep crafting system, overall its a step up from the original elona. You may not like the settlement management but there's no reason to get too involed in it and you can just play it as you play elona. Its removes some of the weird stuff but some of the things are still there and it is also really fucking crazy good
