The most ADVANCED Leica M EVER? - RED35 Review - Leica M-P Typ 240

Thanks for a great shout-out to the M-P 240. One additional feature of this camera, which I discovered recently, is its ability to apply a Contrast Filter (a yellow, orange, red, green or blue colour filter) and a Tone (Neutral, Vintage or Blue) to the Black-and-White Film Mode, i.e.,straight-out-of-the-camera JPEGs. You don’t get this feature on the later digital M’s. In my opinion, this rivals the image quality of the Monochrom Leica cameras, without the need for lens filters.

Thanks for this review. My M-P is on the way. I sold my M8 and M9 to get it. Cheers. Update 8 Oct 2022: This July marked my 50th year as a working photographer. After I received my M-P 240 I sold my M8 and M9 which more than paid for the 240. The size works well for me as I have gorilla hands. The shutter doesn't sound like somebody trying to kick start an old motorcycle. Battery life is incredible. I later acquired the EVF and being able to use some of my legacy lenses as well as my R lenses like my 35-50 Vario Elmarit is a joy. The camera had less than 300 shutter actuations when I received it. The film look of this camera is breathtaking and the shortcomings (few) of the sensor are easily corrected in post. Keep in mind I spent decades shooting with Kodachrome 25 so seeing the results at iso 800 I feel like I'm getting away something. Black and white at iso 800 is a magic spot for low light. I love this camara and everytime I pick it up I get a case of perma grin.

Great video. This was my first leica and I absolutely loved it. Upgraded to a M10 for the dynamic range and low light performance but couldn't quite get back the rendering of the 35FLE paired with the M240P. It's a look I couldn't get out of the SL or M10. So after four years of missing this baby I have just decided to buy it back. Managed to get a used M240P Safari at a reasonable price and had been loving every minute with it since!

The MP240 is my second Leica, my first being the M8. I’ve shot the MP240 daily since it was released and love it. The only thing I’d wish for is the better optical rangefinder on the M10. But I don’t buy into all the upgraditis surrounding camera gear. Shoot the tool you have as often as possible and enjoy capturing moments in time. Great long term review.

I feel like the 240 is still the best choice for people who shoot street/travel in daylight only. It can't even remotely keep up for indoors/night. But image quality is essentially identical during daytime street shooting with the m10- and the battery life is a more desirable upgrade with image parity present.

This is true. I honestly don’t see much difference between the m240 and an m10 in image quality. I only see a difference in colors and I have to say the m240 looks much more appealing to me. A certain look to it that isn’t replicated by the m10.

Yesterday, I went into my local camera store just to check things out. The next thing I knew is I've already bought a used MP240 safari edition with Summicron 35 f2. It was a pretty good deal that I have to grab it. Rangefinder is always my favorite form factor ever since my dad gave me his Canon QL17. I don't shoot much film any more, so I was waiting for other camera company to make and affordable digital FF rangefinder, but forget it, I'd just bough my dream camera.

DarkRami Likewise mate. Unless you need to see in dark or be a paparazzi photographer, rather than an artist in photography, you won’t need to shoot ultra high ISO :)

I upgraded to the M10 - from the M240 - over a year ago. I, too, liked the idea of the bronze vs magnesium body of the M10, but my reason for going to the M10 was the increased image processing speed of the M10, the advanced electronics of the M10. I think the M10 is simply faster to respond to a shutter click. I DID notice the effects of the smaller battery of the M10 right away.

I am using a Sony A7IV but I use an old Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.4 MD manual lens, more than my Sony digital lenses... It's my dream to have a Leica camera for my Portraits works and be that 1 camera 1 lens photographer. Some people might not understand but the feeling & experience using a manual lens that produces imperfect images is just different...

Thanks for watching. Well, M and CL are two very different cameras. One is manual and one is auto. If I am to use Leica, I go all the way to use it the old fashion manual way. So the M for me.

I have the M240. For that true Leica experience it must be married to Leica glass. The 50 Lux asph or the 35 lux steel rim reissue would be ideal.

noah wood Thanks Noah for watching. Well, CCD M has a very different tones and rendition due to its design and also the input (and build) by Kodak! I do use medium format gears and they are all different too. I wouldn’t say which is better because you can never compare formats because they are different and aim for different purposes. Hence I never say anything bad about any format, including my current workhorse Olympus M43 cameras. Larger format does give you a more natural compression if you shoot portrait and definitely more resolution, especially so on films. BTW, I love the CCD Monochrom!

Thanks for watching mate. I love the Monochrome, whether it's the first one or 246. They are just beautiful. I particularly like the tonality it produces and that ultra high sensitivity for hyper focusing on the street is just too good.

Also as a side note, I was wondering if you could share the name of the audio track with the ambient best and the piano piece. It was also incredible! Bene C Wow thank you my friend. Cameras are tools and that’s true. Who doesn’t want the latest and the best but as a Photographer, you don’t need that. I do replace my cameras simply because they will die eventually and my mileage is high and I tend to replace them every two years to improve reliability. Shame that this is really what’s happening in the digital photography world, unlike the good old mechanical cameras where you can properly service the camera and it will last for life.... shame.

Only a specific Olympus EVF works on the M Typ 240 (VF-2, I think, not the latest version). And while you are technically right, I would prefer the M10 (and its siblings) for its slimmer body (and for video I would ressort to my iPhone ;)). But, who knows, I might end up with an M Typ 240 in the end due to budget constraints ... ;)

Christian Augustin hahaha I like both for different things. VF-2 is the one that’s compatible with M240. VF1 and VF3 use different ports! Either cameras is fine actually.

The only thing I don't like about the M240 is the extra body thickness compared to the M10 and the film bodies. Other than that, it's a superb machine.

I do love the M10, feels more a film M but as said, some modern M lenses got fatter too so to me, if you use a bigger summilux like the 24mm or Noctilux, the M240 actually fits and feels better! M10 works best, balance wise, summicron!

I wonder if Leica will make another M with video, or if this will stay with their others like the SL, Q, CL etc. This uncertainty is tempting me to get a M240, as I shoot a lot of video as well as stills, and I'd like to have a M with video capabilities. As it is, I switch to another camera when I want video, which can be fiddly.

Ad 2 No because I always think people over exaggerating colors. Yes, CCD sensors has higher contrast and slightly more saturated in general and resulting a more ‘Kodak Chrome’ looking. But between the M240 and M10, I don’t think the colors are that different. Only the dynamic range is better on the latter sensor. But either won’t disappoint people. I use both and they are fine.

Lee Townsley “International Standard Organisation”, an international standard that currently used to represent sensor sensitivity levels and analogue film speed. In the old days, there are other standards such as ASA, DIN, GE..... and they all faded and disappeared and now only ISO is represented and used.

How to Pronounce ISO Film speed was rated by using the ASA number, American Standards Association (now named ANSI). Film speed use to be referred to by the acronym A.S.A.; It is now referred to by the ISO rating. ISO is pronounced (eye-so) not I.S.O, it is not an acronym. ISO is the name of a company. Is this mispronunciation now a permanent mistake that will never be corrected? “Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal.” ISO is pronounced “eye-so” not I.S.O. it is not an acronym. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. Founded on 23 February 1947, the organization promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and as of March 2017 works in 162 countries. DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung ... the very popular Agfa Color CT18 was a DIN 18 or ASA 50 reverse film. I use my M240 as my daily shooter, but plan to buy a Q as back up or instead of buying a 28/1.4 lens. Would be a nice combo to the M and a 50 mm.

Man, I’ve been hearing this “never go beyond 1600” thing for YEARS. When a camera gets dated, all of a sudden it loses its dynamic range beyond that number iso, 1600. When new, the camera was described as being usable at 6400. It doesn’t add up.
