This problem is just AUR and arch related NOT a overall linux problem. Anki-bin is perfectly working for me same AUR package. Try changing the mirror of pacman and cleaning the pacamn cache and update the system. It should work. If not use flatpak.

I'm guessing some python library that anki is trying to access got updated and some usage in the library changed. It is trying to import from 'attr'?

I share this frustration. I have been plauged with this type of thing before, but this is not a Linux thing per se. It's a problem with the AUR and how some programs gets installed.

this is why I switched to nix and nixos. once you get it working, you can update and roll back atomically. you don't have to worry about updates, because you can always roll back to working version

@@kodiwalls7678 I agree. It is definitely a different world, but I truly think it is worth the benefits. Like, you can search other peoples dotfiles, and actually use them. I feel like other ppls dotfiles are just their .config, which is cool, but not even the half of the whole picture.

Automatic testing would catch such errors, right? So... Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora... pick a distro that tests that packages can be built/installed/updated without dependency errors. Of course bugs will appear from time to time, but at least you will not feel like a beta tester.
@xorlop Жыл бұрын
idk how you can auto test package updates. especially when you have more than 20 or so packages. It just becomes unwieldy. There have been more than a couple times I apply arch update and my system just won't boot 😭
@tumescent Жыл бұрын
@@xorlopit’s not you doing the automatic testing, distros such as openSUSE have infrastructure in place to automatically test packages in virtual environments before shipping them to the end-user. Such infrastructure is too costly to maintain for community distros like arch

bro why do you have attr installed under ~/.local/lib ? if you delete that it'll just fall back to the system python package in /usr/lib. did you randomly install shit from pip without a virtual environment? it's clearly looking in two different places, it's so obvious, you trashed your python with mismatched dependencies. just use a venv or pipx next time you want something from pip
@swagathnaik Жыл бұрын
correct bro, anki is working fine. he should remove or uninstall local pip packages.

@@swagathnaik exactly. just delete everything from .local/lib/python3.11. reinstall in a venv if you need. imagine getting filtered by python.

At least most things that don't work on Linux will throw you an error message but on Windows, it will just say something generic like, "Something went wrong...". So frustrating. Just tell me what happened!

based on never having used anki and limited knowledge of python, error appears to indicate a broken log file parsed from DownloadLogEntry addon could be a log format change between the old version and new version? and dont claim "stuff randomly breaks" after you intentionally uninstalled a working version

I never have this problem. Of course, I'm not using a rolling release. Supporting Windows users with MS365 subscriptions has permanently soured me on rolling release anything. I stick with LTS versions. Maybe I don't have the cutting edge versions, but everything always works.

should consider rethinking the title - it is not a linux issue, and much more a consequence of using arch with aur...

I have my Ubuntu Desktop for several years now and everything works If you want to have stable things use LTS releases if you want to tinker around with the latest stuff use Arch .. Your complaint is kinda misguided ... dunno maybe you expected arch to be stable but honestly I think it's not even that big of a deal because you get stuff for free

for me what is make me angry as hell are: some mouse settings and cursor are in different places in the settings in different distros, no easy way to make smb server by gui. mx linux trying to make easy but not working at all, rest distro similar. K wallet attacking me while trying connect to my wifi. after cancel request from k wallet and connect, do a restart system and again attack, same shit app attacking again, I do not need at all and refuse to connect and app disconnect me from wifi. I remove k wallet, sign to my wifi and do restart to check if now will be OK but no k wallet service still working in background. finally distro go out from the disk ehh.
@Vitis-n2v Жыл бұрын
Kwallet is the password keyring managing service. It's only asking you to unlock the keyring so it can load up your saved passwords. 😂 You're only showing that you haven't even looked up what the service is for. It's like trying to run a program as a superuser but declining prompt from sudo. Kwallet will always be setup on KDE to manage saved passwords and if you switch to gnome then they have their service for this as well.
@diuran1919 Жыл бұрын
@@Vitis-n2v That's fair, that's why I will avoid any KDE distro if kwallet exist in them. Manjaro, Linux Mint, Ubuntu and more dont "attack me" with password manager, I choose what to do with the password if I want to save them.
@Vitis-n2v Жыл бұрын
@@diuran1919 I advise you to do some more research because you clearly don't understand why using keyring is the better option. Simply said without a keyring programs like Networkmanager save the passwords in plain text(readable by root) so anyone with sudo privilegies can read all the passwords to wifis, VPNs etc. while if you use a keyring through service like kwallet it will store those passwords to your keyring that is encrypted which means even if others can read it they would have to have the decryption key. That's just one example from many other i can make. Obviously you don't need to use a keyring but in case where multiple users use the same machine or for security reason if you have passwords for company machines it's pretty much required. Also kwallet is a local service it doesn't send your passwords anywhere it simply works with your .gnupg keyring. About the "attack" i haven't used KDE for few years but from personal experience kwallet only asks you to unlock the keyring after login so you have your keyring ready for the running desktop session after that I don't recall ever getting a popup again for the duration of the session.
