We use ubuntu, centos, and debian, not for daily drivers. Instead, we use it for servers, that's why it pops up on top searched linux distros.

I am much older than you are. And yes, I moved from playing with linux to using it. I'm using Kubuntu (just I like KDE). And Debian was a bit too old. But I think, as long as you use Debian, MxLinux, LinuxMint, the Ubuntu family, you can spend your time working with the system instead of tinkering and fixing a system. So, Arch-based systems are ruled out. And even Fedora (which I think is quite stable, but you get constantly updates and most of the time you need to reboot.) I just want to fire up my laptop and work. BTW I don't care about all the hate against Canonical and snaps...

About the encoding problem. You have to install nvidia-vaapi-driver 0.0.10 or later and libavcodec59. Unfortunetly, the nvidia-vaapi-driver version available on debian stable is 0.0.8 and it doesnt work. So you have to build it yourself manually or find a way to install it from debian experimental.

I have a 1060 too and I used Arch for over a year but distros kept breaking on updates, I looked into this a lot and didn't find the answer until someone told me on Reddit like a week ago. Apparently on updates the Nvidia driver and kernel version can be mismatched and if that happens it won't boot. (Because Nvidia doesn't update at the same time as the kernel does.) So it's recommended on Arch to also have a LTS kernel installed. (But I also heard in general on Arch if you wait longer to update there's a higher chance of breakage.) So I did a lot of research for my next distro and found people talking about how System76 sells hardware with Nvidia cards in them, so they go out of their way to make sure updates work with Nvidia. I switched to it and 8 months of usage I've not had a problem! Arch was breaking in less than a month every time for me! Pop OS is based on Ubuntu but they don't use parts of Ubuntu that are controversial and also they make sure the kernel and GPU drivers are up to date so the performance and bug fixes are available.

This is an example of USER ERROR, not Arch instability… …he basically had no backup recovery options in place!! If you’re going to use Arch, then here’s my tip: 1) Rescuzilla once a quarter of your entire drive (it’s a clone copy). 2) Timeshift hourly/daily of your system files (it’s incremental i.e. fast). 3) Pika Backup hourly of your home directory (it’s like Apple’s TimeMachine but better). 4) Copy your Pika Backup (encrypted) to the cloud at least every month-quarter depending on your needs. 5) Make sure you run at least one Timeshift snapshot before ANY Arch system updates, if you forget then your last snapshot will just be hours or one day old. Note: Timeshift & Pika Backup can be on the same drive, but MUST be kept separate from Rescuzilla backup…never have both drives mounted at the same.

i bonestly dont know what you're people doing with your ststems. Read so much distro hopping and "broken" systems. I'm using Linux for over 20 years, last 10 exclusively, and it wasnt like that even back then. Last 5 years I update my Arch about every 3-6 months with no issues. Only a few times apps changed config formats and I needed to fix config after reading changelog and thats about it, but even then it was far from "broken system". With btrfs I can roll back to any point in time, but never used it other than after doing something stupid like recursively deleting stuff :) Same experiance was with Mint years ago.

This is my experience using Fedora with Nvidia drivers on my Desktop. It works and it works well, but updates are always a gamble. I've completely reinstalled Fedora twice on this system. Now I'm trying bazzite, if only because it's marketed as having a more 'hands-off' setup than vanilla Fedora. I've never had an update break Fedora on my laptop, but my laptop is a Framework which is directly supported hardware.

I'm in the opposite boat. Debian user. Love it. Had to switch to another distro, and chose Arch. The reason was that my GF gifted me the Intel Arc B580 for Christmas. Debian did not like that, and no trouble shooting fixed it (several hours trying to). Switched to Arch, and have had a pretty ok time. Just recreated my Debian setup as much as possible, and don't update everything under the sun as soon as it's released. The LTS version of Arch also runs pretty damn well on my backup gaming laptop. Do miss the apt commands tho, and autoremove. Much easier for me to remember. Once Debian catches up support for my hardware I'll most likely go back. Edit: typos. If I missed any, whoops.

This is why I use btrfs filesystem with snapper, grub-btrfs, snap-pac. Whatevery package I remove or install, update, even my system is unbootable, home and root partitons will be taken to snapshots and I will still be able to enter previous snapshots from grub and restore a previous snapshot or fix something.

If you use pulseaudio, this will give you mono audio (until you reboot the system) $ pacmd list-sinks | grep name: It will send you the name of the stereo output used. Then you type (replacing with the name you have found): $ pacmd load-module module-remap-sink sink_name=mono master=THE_NAME_FROM_THE_PREVIOUS_COMMAND channels=2 channel_map=mono,mono Edit: my ready to go example, might not work for you: ~$ pacmd load-module module-remap-sink sink_name=mono master=alsa_output.pci-0000_0b_00.4.analog-stereo channels=2 channel_map=mono,mono

If those people didn’t have real romantic experience before getting married, then they probably wouldn’t have an idea of what a bad partnership is like - even if they were in one. Hence, lower divorce rates. I can’t recall ambrosia that hasn’t met my lips; I can’t recall Heaven with a worldly mind. (I always found it interesting how worldly is a word with a double-meaning) I understand what you’re getting at, but this one logic is flawed. I agree with a lot of other things you’ve said, such as how lowly behaviors aren’t shunned as much. Which is a bit of double-edged sword, to me. Shame can bind from the freedom to fall or fly free. And, in all honesty, I don’t wish for shame onto anyone who has ever hurt me. I only want them to learn and be better.. but we, ourselves, can’t commit to _real_ change if we’re too afraid of who we are; to trust who we’ll become. Overall, I’m happy that people have more space to flail and make mistakes. And these lessons are hard enough on their own when you don’t have a person whispering their vitriol in your ear. I want to see the innocence in everyone, especially in their anguish. Because nobody knows what they’re doing, and everything is confusing and nobody wants to be broken; because if you break, maybe all of your light will spill out of you. And many don’t have the faith that says, “it can be restored.” On a real note, I hope everyone who reads this can read this while knowing that there will always be someone in this world that loves them enough. Really loves them. And just because they are far, or they had to go away, doesn’t mean their love for you is gone. And nothing about how you look, or the money you make, or how you decide to dress will convince them to deny you your rightful place in their heart. Because they love all things, and they believe that good travels through the winds and sinks into your lungs by the air you breathe - And as long as you continue to take the next breath, what is Good will flourish within you. I wouldn’t say I’m Christian myself, I don’t follow its teachings and I don’t subscribe to certain integral beliefs, but I don’t think I need to be claimed by religion to be thoughtful and caring and kind. And to wish for a marriage that is sacred, between people who share one spirit. And I don’t need to terrified into being good and living well, and I don’t need to fear hell in order to accept and atone for my failings. But that is only what is right for _me_. And it took me some years to embrace it. I only wish each person could find themselves, and live their happiest life, whatever that looks like. And to resist the urge to become what is despised; judging souls based on appearance over substance. I know these days it’s rare to find someone who will truly listen, and give you the chance to express yourself. Even if what you’ve said has been said a thousand times. That’s not the point, in my eyes. I enjoyed seeing your perspective, and I really appreciate how you persisted in expressing an idea.. even when you were unsure of how to verbalize it. It’s not about being perfect, or saying the right things. Because our ignorance can’t be challenged, if it’s hidden away with all the other parts we think are ugly. I wish the best for you. I hope you find what you’re looking for. If anyone has appreciated or felt seen by reading my comment, please pay it forward. Give your mind to a person you trust for a moment.. and truly listen. 🐠 ✿

Glad you found a distro that suites you better. Picking something like Hyprland and expecting stability is not realistic. If you do want Hyprland then having a backup environment and/or pinning the version of hyprland to a working version for you is one workable solution. Along with using something like BTRFS snapshots to easily roll back updates. Debian isn't immune from that issue either just less likely. The same safeguards should be in place IMO. You can also add NIX packages to debian as well to get update apps w/o breaking debian. Any Linux is still better than Windoze or Mac Best of luck !

Not updating for a long time and suddenly updating causing breakage I think is an overall Linux problem. I've had it happen on Debian Based Distros too. I had an old Pop_OS Distro that was 1yr out of date(keep in mind Pop_OS is still on 22.04 even today) I updated it & after that it was irreversibly corrupted, wouldn't even boot in. I recently had to nuke my Laptop Fedora install, BC I upgraded via GUI(Discover) and it caused a Kernel Panic & it was 3-4 months since Fedora 41 released. Now luckily I was still able to boot into an older Kernel and fixed the issue. But I've had too many things go wrong, when I don't stay on top of updates(major ones atleast). So I believe there's a problem w/the core of Linux's direct updating method. It gives 100% power to the user, but there's nearly no way for the average user to determine which to install first or what to install in parts or what to leave alone. It's all or nothing unless there's a specific package you don't want updated. All or nothing approach causes problems for systems that haven't been updated in a while specifically on Linux.

9:08 I kinda have to disagree with this. Customization is good, especially if it helps you being more efficient (like actually). Many users just have the problem, that they can't resist the urge to tweak EVERYTHING they see and never learned what modifications are useful and which not. Currently I'm using macOS (Catalina) on an 2011 MacBook (just for fun actually), and it is annoying how much macOS gets in your way and how much functionality it misses: Like I have 4-5 programs to add back some basic functionality/tweaking options, and I would've installed another one, if it wasn't a paid program. So one has to either use weird workarounds, or force himself to use it in an "inconvenient" way. (Lowkey the same goes for GNOME too) On my main laptop I use Artix with runit + Plasma and it is a blessing like 99% of the time. As I use that machine for my CS stuff too, I configured everything once how I need it and go with it. Yeah occasionally I find myself adjusting some settings or fixing a little hickup, but imo I'm still faster. It's like having a little stone in your shoe: - You take a little time to stop, take off the shoe, remove the little stone and walk the rest comfortably; or - You try to live with the stone in your shoe and walk the whole trip with this pain in your foot; - or you can just make your life miserable by checking every 5 steps, if there is a stone in your shoe despite not feeling anything, tighten up your laces over and over and wiping your shoes clean every time In my opinion, it is just better to have the freedom to change something and not use it, rather than needing to change something but not being able to. I even tried Fedora with GNOME recently and as of now I unironically had more issues with it than with Arch/Artix (despite being called one of the "normier" distros). Of course, it is not only the ""limited"" flexibility/freedom, but also a lack of a proper wiki/documentation, but it is a factor to me. I ran Debian sid for some time too, but PPAs bothered me so much, I just had to get back to an Arch-based distro. TL;DR: Resist the urge to configure every small detail; keep the system simple, adjust your stuff once but good; configure only if it actually is benefiting you; Being free to modify + not doing it > needing to modify + not being able to

6:29 You might want to check out if you can use hardware video encode/decode for recording (and watching videos), CPU usage seems quite high for such a simple recording imo It is well documented for Arch/Artix/..., don't know how different you need to go for Debian tho Edit: I see you mentioned it yourself already lol
