You know me and my friend talked about the ironclad beetle some time ago and how scientists have to put in a tremendous amount of effort to pin it up on a plaque, but then suggested that they just glue it on instead… man that would make things way easier. Man the ironclad is amazing it’s like a pigeon getting sucked into an airplane engine and still come out unscathed

When talking about defenses on animals, you have to also talk about the offense. If you wanna go camping in the Northern part of our planet, beware of 1 animal. The fully grown Polar Bear can sit down and eat 150 pounds of meat at one time. If you bring a camera that uses heat to detect where an animal is, the inferred light won't pick up on a Polar Bear. I mean you would figure that a Polar Bear would be glowing red like a star in the cold back ground, but it doesn't. So if you can't use inferred light to catch a Polar Bear sneaking up on you, then you have to do it the old fashioned way. Use your eyes and if you see the Polar Bear, well you are already to late. So carry a big gun and make sure that you know how to use it. Don't be like my oldest Uncle that carried a rifle everywhere he went and when it was time to use it, he forgot to take the rifle off of safety. So we try not to talk about my Uncle Jim to much.

The emu's weren't necessarily bulletproof. They look big, but get rid of all those feathers and it's a lot smaller than you think. Also the positioning of organs, what a kill shot for a mammal is not the same for a bird, especially flightless bipedal ones. So a combination of smaller than you thought speedy agile target with an inaccurate machine gun is not going to land you many kills if any. They'd have better luck going the slow and steady route using semi-auto and actually hunting the emus efficiently.
@chouseification
@chouseification Жыл бұрын
exactly... deer rifles would drop those emus every single time, especially if you're on the higher end, like a nice happy .300 Win Mag, one of my own favorites. One round per bird almost guaranteed. Those "machine guns" were basically firing handgun rounds I thought... not much penetration power.

Emus aren´t bulletproof, the real story behind that is a bit different. Emus are quite fast and are found in huge floks, by the time the first shot was fired (and firerate wasn´t that high either at the time and accuracy was an issue as well), they just were all gone after they shot 20 bullets (they start fleeing after the very first shot), all the additional ammo they wasted was due trying to get some of the fleeing once.
