Gary, you are the best! First, you get straight into the presentation, second you give clear, coherent explanations, third the examples are easy to follow and best of all you don't descend into juvenlie slang, you treat us as adults and you don't call us "guys"! By far the best set of videos and explanations on Mac I have found on KZbin.

I reckon the F4 one might be “alt F4” which quits a program in Windows. One other useful one that threw me when I switched from Windows (years ago!) was how to backspace rather than delete (ie delete characters to the left of the cursor), which is FN and Delete for anyone who doesn’t know. Another cool video Gary, thanks :)

Gary, what's the system-wide (not via app prefs) key combination to instantly switch from American-style quotes (upper-upper) to German-style (lower-upper)? Word processors like Pages let you set it up in Prefs, but if you write in one and quote in the other language, you need to switch instantly, as quick as Shift-Option-2 for the Euro €. Can the Mac do that?

There’s a considerable amount of confusion (to me at least) regarding all the sets of login credentials within the Apple environment. Apple doesn’t always do well describing exatly what your logging into then it makes a login request. Apple ID, sounds like a really simple concept but there are so many other logins that it can get really confusing. iTunes Store, Apps Store, iCloud, the actual login I use when first accessing my physical device, short ID name, long ID name, etc, etc. Is there a way to sort all this out by unifying some (or all) of these credential sets - after I’ve managed to mess them up? If you could do an in-depth Apple account review/tutorial - I think lots of folks could benefit from it.
@macmost
@macmost 3 жыл бұрын
You may be overthinking it. There are only two logins you need to worry about. Your Apple ID is for everything online: iCloud, iTunes, App Store. Then you have your local computer ID and password. That's just for Mac user account. Think of it like your passcode on an iPhone. It is for unlocking your Mac account and giving permission for Mac things.

Gary, I have a question. My wife and I listen to audio through the Libby app. The problem is we are often not in the same room, and can’t hear the phone that the book is playing on. We like to be in sync as we are both artisans and often spend hours working together. It there an app that you know of that would let us hear a book via Libby, and send that audio out to be picked up and played by a second phone in the house, on the same wifi network? Thanks, I alway enjoy your most informative videos and I have 6 apple devices to support!

f4 is used in MS Office apps to repeat the last command (similar to CTRL-Y). It's very useful. But in Excel it's also used to cycle through the absolute/relative reference options when you're typing a formula (as you mentioned). The equivalent on a Mac is CMD-T. Why they didn't make it fn-f4 is beyond me.
@melellington1333

F4 key on Mac? When PC users ask that my first guess would be they are referring to closing a window. On the Mac that is the standard command-W, albeit it is not universal among Mac applications-no more universal than 'Quit' or 'File' or 'Open' or 'Help' menu options are universal on Macs; just standard and common. My guess would be they are referring to Alternate-F4 on a PC. This is one of the most common commands on PCs. It is available on standard PC application windows in the upper left corner of the window, typically on the leftmost side of the title bar. It's not universal on PC applications but very common and been there for well over 20 years.

The copy/paste query might relate to files in the Finder. If you want to move a file on Windows, it's CTRL-X then CTRL-V, which is analogous to moving some text in a document. But that doesn't work on a Mac. You have to go CMD-C, then CMD-OPT-V. Personally, I think the Windows way is more elegant. Actually, after 15 years on the Mac, I still think the way you manipulate files in Windows is better. I love the right click-drag function, which just doesn't exist on the Mac. And I like being able to interact with files in save dialogs, like it's a mini File Explorer window. I understand why that isn't allowed on the Mac (it might confuse users) but it is a time saver.
@zoltanzana
@zoltanzana 4 ай бұрын
The basic idea here is that if you want to move a file (on Windows, CTRL-X) and suddenly, for instance, you get a phone call and forget about that file being cut, it will disappear from the original location without being pasted into the new location. If, instead, you just copy the file (Cmd + C on Mac), it will remain in its original location and will only move when you've pasted it (Cmd + Option + V) into the new location.

@@SuperMiclovan I'm still not sure what you mean. The only time a file (window?) goes into the Dock is when you minimize it (yellow button). Is that what you are doing? It shouldn't go into the Dock when you open it, it should open and you should see it. The only other thing I can think of if that when you launch an app then if the app isn't in the Dock yet, it is then listed toward the right side of the Dock. Those icons will remain there as long as you don't quit the app. If you want to leave it in the Dock even when the app isn't being used, then add it to the Dock. Assuming you want to minimize all windows in order to get to your Desktop (which is "behind" all of your windows), you could simply spread your thumb and three fingers on your trackpad🤏🏻Check it out in System Preferences > Trackpad > More Gestures. If you have a mouse instead of a trackpad, you can achieve the same result by setting up a so-called Hot Corner. Go to System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver > Hot Corners and set one corner of your screen to "Desktop". Yet another way to make all the windows slide away and display the Desktop is to press COMMAND+F3. Hope that helps✌🏻

The problem is right-clicking a marked object without a mouse. This is trivial on a windows machine (there is a button for it) and impossible on a Mac. Any solution?

So a trackpad? Usually you click with two-fingers. You can customize it in System Preferences, Trackpad. You can also Control+click to bring up the context menu.

@@macmost No, without the trackpad (😈), just with the keyboard. It should be trivial but even with BTT I havn't found a solution. I want to trigger the contextual menu of selected text or items, by pressing a button combination. Thanks for the answer, you are awesome!

@@BanjoSick How would it work without a pointing device though? It needs a location to focus the context. You can go to System Preferences, Accessibility, Pointer Control, Alternate Control Methods and assign a pointer action to a key. But I don't think that's what you want as it would act on the pointer location, not the selected item. If your goal is to take an action on the selected item, it is better to either know the keyboard shortcut, or to use the menu bar. Usually anything you can find in the context menu is also in the menu bar. Control+F2 takes you to the menu bar, then you can use arrows to navigate. Or, I like to use Command+Shift+/ to start at the Help menu and search for the menu item. See kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5vQn3ytfZt6aZI

@@macmost I should take the selection as context, like it does when one copies/pastes. The menubar works for items in the Finder. I do that, even though it's clumsy and take like 11 keystrokes to open an excel file in numbers, while it takes 4 keystrokes when selecting the contextual menu by mouse/trackpad. For selected text this is plainly impossible, which is quite incredulous. It should be possible to navigate your machine by keyboard alone. The competing data systems (MS Windows, Chrome OS/Google Docs) have solutions here, I wish  would swallow its pride here. I actually tried the BetterTouchTool trigger and i works in Notes, but not in Safari. I will investigate further.

@@BanjoSick To open in Excel, assign a custom keyboard shortcut to the exact name of the menu item in Finder (Whatever is in File, Open With, maybe "Microsoft Excel.app"?) For text, what are you trying to do? Which menu item are you trying to access?

On Big Sur Ctrl-Cmd-Space brings up the emoji pallet, but there is no search bar.

Try scrolling up in that window if you don't see it.

I's tried it in Excel and I did get a search bar with the emojis. I don't why it is different.

@@johnstephenson8087 So it works in other apps, like Pages and Numbers, but not in Excel? Sounds like Microsoft has some custom code there for text input then.

@@macmost Ya, that did it, scrolling showed the search box. I thought I had tried that, guess not 😀 Thank you.

Hi, you share a Lot of needed info,however, could you possibly talk a bit slower… I cannot begin to keep up … it’s like your running when you talk or you’ve speeded up your voice deliberately. Thanks😂
