Umar Ibn Al-Khatab Masjid, Mesquita Foz Do Iguaçu, Foz do Iguacu, Brazil (26/04/2024) :
I visited this Masjid a few times during my short stay in Foz do Iguacu, and to my surprise, it was such an amazing experience to hear the azan from the outside.
The Masjid is located in predominantly Arabic neighbourhoods and is one of the major landmarks of the city, as well as a very popular tourist spot.
This is one of the largest Masjids in Brazil and the only one in Foz do Iguacu. The Masjid was opened to the public on March 23rd, 1983, and has a capacity of around 600 people, with facilities for both men and women.
I was there for the Jummah prayer on April 26th, 2024. The Masjid was half full during the prayer, and most of the attendees were either Arab immigrants from Palestine or Lebanon.
Foz do Iguacu is home to over 20,000 Muslims, and the city is very halal-friendly. You’ll find a lot of halal restaurants, takeaways, and shops throughout the city. Most of the immigrants are from Lebanon and Palestine, having migrated in the 1940s.
These Muslims were predominantly traders and merchants who fled their countries to avoid persecution in their homelands. Although they accumulated considerable wealth over time, they gradually lost certain aspects of their Islamic identity
