All Ella says is "How pretty", which, coming from The First Lady of Song, is quite a heart warming compliment - really too bad this wasn't much longer - and wish they had recorded an album of medleys & duets together - what an incredible treasure that would have been!

I think what's really awesome about this clip, Karen adored Ella Fitzgerald and the Lady of Soul was Karen's favorite singer as a child. In her biography it talks about this and she and her brother listening to Ms. Fitzgerald 's records much of the time. Karen loved her scat singing and would try to imitate it as a young fan. Apparently she was pretty good at it, too. Long story short, Karen was in the presence of one of her musical idols since a wee little girl! I can't imagine what Karen was feeling. What a dream come true for her. This musical moment just makes it that much more endearing to me. And thank you so much for reacting to this timeless duet with the magnificently great Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter. Two of the greatest, and most beloved singers on this planet, together here for a duet! 🎶🎤🤗🥰🤗🥰🎙🎶

Let's remember that Karen died at the age of 32. She was 12 to 15 yrs. before her prime. With the additional seasoning of her talents she would have sang the great American songbook as good as anyone! Her name would have gone down in music history along with the greats of the 20th century. The likes of Billy holiday, Barbra streisand, Ella fitzgerald, Diana washington, Judy garland, Sarah vaughan, Frank sinatra, Tony bennett, Nat King Cole and a few others I have not mentioned. The lady absolutely belongs among the very best! It's such a shame that Karen did not live long enough to bless us with her incredible talent! God bless you Karen now you sing with the angels.

This kind of programming was all over television in the 50s and 60s. As a little kid in the mid 60s, I was exposed to all kinds of jazz and big band music. They were called variety shows and top performers filled the TV airwaves on different networks at least twice a week. I'm a big rock and roll and folk music fan, but starting in my late 30s I went back to reacquaint myself with jazz and big band music, that I first learned about on TV variety shows growing up. Somewhere our culture went off the tracks and we lost so much.

So one or two of your fans might remember: Back in the 1970s, Ella did a commercial for some brand of cassette tape (if you don't know what that is, look it up). It was notable, because the "hook" was Queen Fitzgerald scatting and finally hitting a note so high it shattered a glass. I was going to music camp at the time (pianist, oboist [questionably], vocalist). For skit night, my cabin recreated the commercial, except the guy in my cabin playing Ella had his coat pulled up over his head, with an inflated balloon partially filled with ketchup standing in for Ella's head. When "she" hit the high-note, he punctured the balloon with a pin, thus causing "Ella's" head to explode. Comedy gold to 12-year-olds. If anyone from Bellis Music Camp, circa 1978 is reading this, what's up?

It was great seeing 2 top quality singers, enjoying singing together. I know Karen was in awe of Ella, as Ella was already a legend at this time and had been at the top for years, as Karen was still on the rise up. Long before the internet. I was about 5 or 6 years old, I was watching a black and white movie called Kelly's Blues, when Kelly (Jack Webb) goes into a bar, and there is this woman singing on a very small stage. She sang a whole song, and I recall saying to myself, "That woman can sing." She also sang one other complete song, that turned out to be Hard Hearted Hanna. I had no idea who the woman was, until about 18 years later, when I saw the movie again on light night tv. That woman was Ella Fitzgerald, and I then went out an bought one of her albums in about 1971. I was hooked. Then about that time or a couple of years later, I heard Karen. I considered them both to be on the same level, but each with their own style. It's like comparing Beethoven to Mozart. How can you pick one?
