Love your reaction to Sassy! She’s a goddess. I’m a jazz and opera lover for over 40 years…for me, she was the greatest vocalist of the 20th century. Ella Fitzgerald thought so too. I think it was Miles Davies who said that she could do things with her voice that instrumentalists wouldn’t dare trying. Billie, Ella, Nina and Sarah have been my musical “aunties” since I was a toddler…but Sarah holds a very special place in my heart, a little bit more than the others…a very great artist, blessed with a unique instrument. 🥰🥰🥰

The incredible Sara Vaughn. I remember growing up as a kid in the 60s. My sister and I had early Motown, the Beatles and the great pop music before we were even teens and would later enjoy all the 70s music. My parents had all the great classic artists as Sara, Lena Horne, Barbara Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, the Rat Pack, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennet, Perry Como, Andy Williams and more. Those artists were the grownup's music, but being exposed to it as kids I could appreciate this music into my adulthood. I even listen to the music of my parent's young adulthood, Big Band jazz and swing from the 1940s. Wonderful, happy, instrumental music that folks danced to even though WWII was going on at the time. Good music is such a time machine and great music is simply timeless.

Sarah Vaughan was the most incredible voice of the last century. I met her in 1974 and saw her live until her much too early death in 1990. If you want to hear something that will bring tears to your eyes listen to her rendition of “If You Could See Me Now””. It was written for her by Tad Dameron when they both lived at the Broderick Hotel in Harlem at a time when neither of them were welcome at a hotel downtown. It was a very tough time for Black performers with many segregated clubs in NY. Yes, NY. The song in my mind is autobiographical for I don’t believe Sarah ever found romantic happiness. She was a grand lady and an artist from a world of excellence. We briefly spoke a couple of times. She was lovely and there seldom a day goes by when I don’t listen to one of her songs. I am SO Glad you discovered her and are sharing her phenomenal talent on KZbin. G-d Bless and thanks for a great video and sharing it with us all.

Sarah Vaughn isn't just jazz, Sarah Vaughn is one of the best parts of jazz. One of the greatest voices ever, one of the best vocal instruments you'll ever hear!! Ella Fitzgerald (who I believe you reacted to recently) is known as the First Lady of Song, & she, Sarah & Billie Holliday are arguably the top 3 female jazz vocalists of all time. Naturally, Billie Holliday is another voice you must hear. Her song, Strange Fruit, tells a haunting story, but she sings it beautifully. God Bless The Child is another great one. My favorite by Billie is The Very Thought Of You. Another of my favorite female jazz singers is Nancy Wilson. If you want to know what it means to swing a song, listen to her do This Song Is You. If you want to hear my favorite version of my most favorite song of all the songs in all the world, listen to the exquisite perfection of Nancy Wilson's version of Someone To Watch Over Me. So, soooo beautiful!! Personal note: I've been lucky enough to say I've seen many of the great singers in concert, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, & Sammy Davis, Jr., among many, many others, but the one who completely, totally, absolutely mesmerized me more than any other was Sarah Vaughn!! I left that concert knowing I had heard an angel sing!!
