Great video! Where the name Brugge comes from is not exactly known. The most plausible explanation is that it is a corruption of the Keltic word of the river in the city (Reie), the Keltic word was Ryggia which evolved into Bryggia, hence the Dutch variant is Brugge. The Dutch word for 'bridge' would be brug, but the multiplicative is 'bruggen', not 'brugge'.
@Erulin68 Жыл бұрын
As Flemish folk, which I take it you are, you could atleast have put 'Brugge' in the title instead of Bruges. As a Bruggeling I take offence. 🤣😂 Just kidding, great video showing off my home town. Brugge is derifived from 'Bryghia' Which is Norse for 'landing stage' The town was founded by Vikings who used it as well, a landing stage to go on further raids. So no, it's not called Brugge because of all of our bruggen but because of the Vikings. 😁 Our Swans are here because in 1488 they killed the Bourgondian governor Pieter Lanchals (long neck) so Maximilian of Austria, Maria van Bourgondië's husband, condemend the city to always have 52 long-necked swans or they'd come sack the city. He of course already had an aversion to Brugge as his wife died here in 1482 after falling off her horse.

@Dominic: In the Northern part of Belgium, Flanders, yes. In Brussels and the Southern part of Belgium not always. People there speak French. In Flanders we speak Dutch (Flemish) as a mothertongue, but we learn French from the age of 10 years old in school and from the age of 13 we learn English at school. These are standard courses, so you cannot refuse to do these. If you choose languages after that, you also learn German and Spanish from 15 or 16 years old. Where are you from? I would guess Italy looking at your name? There are several areas where people also speak Italian (as there anchestors where Italian) and in Italian restaurants of course.

What a beautiful city! Can't resist to comment, the 4 seasons in a day weather is like Melbourne Australia, the pastel colours buildings and the buzz around the water are like in Gdansk Poland. The boat ride experience? I would choose this Bruges ride anytime over the one in Venice. 11:24 this gondola in Venice looks so touristy and gives that artificial feeling, it's overpriced and some gondoliers in Venice are not that nice.
