What do you think of the Volvo 1800 series?
@jacquespoirier9071

a beautyful body design based on a bulletproof Volvo drivetrain, the best of both worlds. it is not a performance stellar but a worthful compromize anyway, any car is a compromize so reliability is of a main concern, and this series have a well proven DNA

These are awesome cars and I first discovered them with The Saint. A long time friend of mine owned a P1800ES and that car may still have some of my drool on it.

An excellent presentation. Like the confusion over credit for design of the Volvo P1800, the story about the car's appearance in "The Saint" is a bit muddled. The TV production company actually wanted a Mark X Jaguar, not an E-Type for use in "The Saint", and Roger Moore offered to buy it as his personal car as well as use it on the show. He was on his way to starting a family thus needed the interior space of a larger car. Even though I can see the E-Type being more in line with a hero of this nature, such a two-seater car would present filming challenges with the limited interior room for filming. Plus it was not as graceful to enter and exit as a Mark X saloon. But Jaguar wouldn't move him or the film company up on the waiting list. Other car companies were approached including Mercedes, but also lacked any real interest. The Production Manager Johnny Goodman has seen this at the London Motor Show, and told Roger Moore. They called the company Monday, and Volvo was very cooperative in providing a four cars or so over the course of the entire seven year production, as well as an interior shell for studio filming purposes. Roger Moore was such an ambassador for the brand that anywhere he went, he could rely on Volvo available for his use, and one of his cars later in life was a Volvo C70 convertible that he used at his home in Monaco. How times change from when most companies would be knocking down the producers' door to get their car screen time. But Jaguar had a serious production capacity shortage at that time to the point that it purchased Daimler from BSA (the motorcycle manufacturers) not for the marque name or vehicles, but for its manufacturing capabilities it so desparately needed to maintain production of such a popular line of vehicles. One of the Saint Volvos (a '67 used towards the end of the series) was located in the UK, restored by an avid Saint / TV and car enthusiast in Virginia named Bill Krzastak. The car made the car show circuits, and appeared on Jay Leno's Garage in 2014. At some point, Volvo itself purchased the lovingly-restored vehicle, and it now resides at the Volvo museum in Gothenberg, Sweden.

Loved my '72 1800ES...right up until the time I bought my "71 1800E. Now I can enjoy the notchback for every driving and pull out the estate for traveling with cargo or for those Home Depot runs. Maybe you might want to do a feature on the ES as well? The are the same...only different. Love your content so please, keep 'em coming!

When I was driving my Alfa in the '70's while in HS, one of my besties drove a Volvo P1800 and I was always impressed with how pretty it was, the build quality and sturdiness.

@@BadBlonde-CarHistory I have my '57 Alfa Giulietta Spider that is a one-owner (dad bought it new while worked for Alfa), and it was my first car. Thanks for asking and keep up the great videos!! Seriously thinking about buying a P1800 or something fun to put some miles on, also thinking about a 911...oh the choices...lol!

Just discovered your channel and thoroughly enjoyed your animated energy giving a thumbnail sketch of the P 1800. I also had a laugh about your 15 year resto on the Porsche as I relate it to my 6 year…and counting resto of my 71 1800🤦‍♂️. Grew up in a small university town and when my brother and I first saw one in my dads A&W parking lot in the early 60’s, I said…One of these days..
