Cape Reinga offers an unforgettable northern New Zealand experience, where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide in a mesmerizing dance of currents.
At the northernmost tip, an ancient pohutukawa tree, estimated to be over 800 years old, stands as a sacred landmark. According to Maori tradition, this is Te Rerenga Wairua-the place where spirits of the deceased take their final leap into the ocean, beginning their journey back to the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki.
Though not technically the northernmost point of New Zealand (that title belongs to North Cape, a restricted scientific reserve), Cape Reinga marks the symbolic "end of the road."
Reaching Cape Reinga from Kaitaia takes about 1.5 hours by car. Guided coach tours run daily from Kaitaia and Paihia (Bay of Islands), offering an immersive journey through Maori and early European history, including a scenic drive along the famous 90 Mile Beach.
For a faster and equally breathtaking option, scenic flights from the Bay of Islands provide an aerial view of the Cape and both coastlines of New Zealand.
As a sacred site, eating is not permitted at Cape Reinga. However, for those seeking a picnic spot, the stunning Tapotupotu Bay-just 5 km before the Cape-offers a perfect setting to relax and take in the beauty of the region.
