I feel like World War 1 was more brutal and should have the title of the most brutal war in history. Roughly estimated 20 million dead and 23 million wounded in just 4 years. And that's without huge city destroying bombs, jets, or true weapons of mass destructions.

Since most of the brutalities were either invented or glorified by chroniclers, I'd say the Crusades were not the most brutal _wars_ in History. Jerusalem even got bought back without any bloodshed once. As for the most brutal wars, I'd pick either WW1, the Sengoku Jidai, any chinese civil war or the Punic Wars.

also WW1 and WW2 very very brutal, one can say that WW2 was just a continuation of WW1 with the years from 1918 to 1939 being a peace intermission. and the Eastern front in WW2 probably hands down being the most brutal region of war in both world wars.

I would say the most brutal war of the 20th century would be the Chinese civil war 1911 to 1949. which came in several phases . 1911 to 1912 Revolution which deposed the Qing Dynasty. Yuan Shi Kai gov. 1912-1916. Warlord or War of Reunification era 1916 to 1929. KMT era 1929 to 1949. (which includes the Second SIno Japanese war (1931 to 1945, war vs. the CCP 1927 to 1949, Central plains war 1930). I would say all that put together the Chinese probably suffered 50 million or even 100 million deaths in the course of 38 years that can be attributed to war. Very brutal with atrocities by all sides and much of China was ravaged by war.

It is true they all calm descendancy through Abraham. The problem is how they each grew. With Christianity, you had the Spanish inquisition, crusades and the church selling indulgences. While with Islam you had religious taxes, or enslavement through Devshirme. The Jewish people originally had money in the form of the first bankers, gained status through just wealth alone almost. Every religion has people who try to perverse the teachings for their own individualistic gain.

"Brutal" is kind of a vague term. There's no clear ranking between torture, abuse, amount of needless death, cruelty of deaths, desecration, etc. And, to be honest, I don't think we want to make one because we don't want someone trying for a high score in some future war to "scare their enemies" as many brutal military leaders have done in the past. I'd also agree with your point that it wasn't a single war, but several entirely separate campaigns. Of them, the first was probably the most brutal due to the slaughter of the people, but that has happened in several wars.

One thing I had a history professor point out is if you look at how the first pope to declare a crusade did it vs. this much later pope who did it (I forget which) you have the earlier one focusing heavily on the religious reasons for declaring the crusade while the later pope is legit just like "Yeah, we're going to go head over and pillage those people and get a lot of loot." and he focuses WAY less on talking about like God wanting it or whatever... (Yeah, watched a bit more of the video... Urban II was the earlier pope I was talking about who was more religious-oriented with his speech)

One interesting thing about knights, they would choose to take enemy knights as prisoner instead of killing them and while this kinda got tied into the idea of chivalry it was more so because knights were from rich families and rich families had lots of money to pay ransoms... Also it was nice to take knights prisoner because you want to sell their armor, not damage it... ALSO I went over an article on this for class, a BIG reason the French lost Agincourt was due to religion... They could've attacked the English at a more opportune moment, but didn't because of God and the article went into how in order to keep God appeased there were reasons why you would want to avoid attacking fellow Christians and also why Agincourt ended up happening is also because you don't want to disappoint God by avoiding battle... So that kinda led the French to hesitating at first and then inevitably engaging and by then the English got into a strategic position... Had a class on ancient and medieval warfare and we looked at a bunch of articles and had to do a paper writing about arguments by historians where some focused on the more practical things that impacted ancient and medieval warfare (i.e. most of it being siege warfare) and more cultural things (i.e. religion) There was also stuff like the "Peace of God" movement which tried to get Christians to stop warfare in Europe...

We are talking nobles here.... You don't want to squander your trained warriors and craftsmen in petty little family disputes. You need them for next year's petty family dispute. Use peasants in the front lines!
@RealmRabbit

@@Aimless6 The nobles don't want that though... Nobles want to be on the front lines for the glory because their often overconfident prideful losers... They'll be upset with you if you don't use them... Plus you don't want to let the peasants have first pickings of all the loot... I think the whole reason for having a coat of arms and such was so people could recognize and be in awe of you as you fought valorously on the battlefield...

Although wars have become more deadly in recent years, I'd argue they've become less brutal. A good example of this is a bayonet and a bullet - bullets are far deadlier, but a bayonet is significantly more painful and slow, thus making it more brutal. I would say the most brutal war in human history was the American Civil War. Old & crude war tactics were still used, but the whole clean "gentleman's code of honor" was noticeably absent for the time period.
