Oh, I can attest to the power of plantain. I was bit by a yellow jacket and instantly found plantain. I chewed it, placed it on the bite area and the throbbing was gone in less than 2 min. This is just on of God's gifts to His children.

When I was a very young boy I had hit my smallest finger with a hammer and lost the nail. It had gotten considerably infected. My grandmother was visiting and she told me to go outside and get a weed that looked like a big spoon. It was the broadleaf plantain. She wrapped it around my finger, put a piece of tape around it to hold it in place. Within a few days all the infection wad gone and it heeled very quickly. Your videos are inspiring. Thanks

It also pulls items. My husband had surgery a few years ago on his clavicle and had a knot of suture stuck in his skin for at least 2 years. I tried pulling it out to no avail. Then, I had the idea to put plaintain root tincture on a bandaid overnight. It came out easily the very next day. I just wanted to push a little to try again with tweezers, and it popped right out. Great for splinters, too. That example just astonished me.

My 3 year old (almost 4!!!) has known about plantain for a year: "For bee stings and bug bites". Between that, autumn olive, rose hips, and "heart plant" (wood sorrel)-those are her favorites and the first ones she has learned to identify.

Since I live in a townhome with only common areas that are chemically sprayed and also used by animals, I decided several years ago to grow broad leaf and narrow leaf plantain plants in a pot under a grow light. They did very well. I have made salve for bug bites and skin irritations. My kids live away from me, but I have given them little jars. One young grandson has called it “Oma’s special medicine” and asks for it for mosquito & other bug bites.😂

Plantain was the first herb I foraged. My grown boys and even my husband 😮swear by the salve for bites and poison ivy. The seed heads of the narrow leaf variety are even more fun. Wrap the stem around itself just below the head, aim at a sibling, and pop the head off! They’ll fly several feet 😂

I use plantain and make a tea. After it cools I strain and store the liquid in the refrigerator for a week or so. It is wonderful to get rid of the itch of poison ivy. Just use a cloth or cotton pad to cover the itchy patches. It stops the itch right away. Reapply as needed.

I remember when I was about five years old, my older brother fell into a patch of stinging nettles, on our farm. My parents packed him with broadleaf plantain, tied together with handcerchieves if that is how you write it. 🤪 My first lesson in herbalism. Now I have my own little shop in my own little farm and plantain is always in my salves and creams. 🌱

I've made several salves. Plantain is always my base, then I add others depending on what I'm looking for. I use. Calendula, comfrey, oregano, thyme, lavender, dead nettle vit E to preserve, and a few drops of tea tree oil. I actually cleared a staff infection I had on my face from butchering chickens a few weeks ago(unfortunately poop happens) I remember it splashing on my face and thinking omg I have to wash, but then we we're so focused on getting the job done I didn't remember until several hours later(so gross I know). Anyway Dr said staff and gave me a prescription. I decided I'd try my salve first, and it worked in three days!!!! I was so impressed and no antibiotics necessary yay

I've been using plantain for years with stings and bites; This past year I learned it and its narrow-leafed cousin can be added to "cold/allergy remedy teas". I make one with pine needles/violet leaves/turkey-tail/plantains/honey. Works like a charm, treating symptoms and cause...and it tastes better than one might think.

Central New Mexico here and we have narrow leaf plantain! I imported seeds from a friend’s unsprayed property, and now we have a bunch of plants peppered through our orchard. And yes- I’ve done the quick chew poultice on mosquito bites for my little ones. It’s a little gross but really quite effective! Thanks for teaching all the great herbal actions plantain offers. It’s one of my favies. 💚

About 7 years ago I had a bite that I had gotten from the garden while I was working... I wasn't sure if it was a spider at first but it got very inflamed that night and so I had read that a plantain poultice would help pull the poison out. I went out in my yard late that night and found plantain...chewed it up and made a bandage for my leg. It was practically well the next day...then healed completely. 😊

I was having a hard time finding it in a place that wasn’t under threat of doggy walks. I went scouring the back yard for it and finally saw a little bit. I told my sister to inform the landscaping guy to “stop cutting the grass, I want the weeds to grow.” This brought about some curious questions. Sometimes I enjoy looking crazy because it leads to educational opportunities.

I just finished making Plantain Salve. So easy. I used some on a chronic itchy rash with sores on my shoulder and the itch was gone immediately and after 2 days the sores are nearly gone also. I marinated fresh torn and dry to the touch leaves in olive oil for 3 weeks in a jar on a sunny warm window ledge. The jar was lidded and the oil did not go rancid. I will cover with cheese cloth next batch. I used a mix of both broad and narrow leaf plantain. I also have a ½ gallon jar of mullein tincture marinating in a dark corner of my pantry too. It'll be ready to process in a few more weeks. Mullein offers great benefits for the lungs!

A crock pot is usually a little too warm, some brands worse than others, but you can use them with an Inkbird thermometer switch, which will regulate temperature to a better range. Yogurt makers work. Some Instant Pots have a yogurt setting. I used to put jars under a black plastic pot in the sun and have to bring it in every night. Since I have been using the thermometer switch with the slow cooker, the quality of my oil maceration has really gone up and it is much quicker and less hassle. My oil doesn't get rancid and the herb essences seem better. Low consistent warm temperature is so superior. We have more narrow leaf plantain here. Noticed some of it in the photo with the broadleaf picking. I use it wilted fresh usually. Seems lackluster dry. We lose it in the summer heat and dryness. It is wet season/cool season plant around here, so it would be nice to preserve some.

So just to make sure I understand. There are ways, 1. slow and cool: 30 days in a cool dark place. 2. in a warm window for a couple days or in a crock pot for 36 hours .....Correct?

@TheHomestead I’ve just watched a video where someone uses a French coffee press to filter infused oils and tinctures to stop it absorbing into the muslin fabric and wasting some of it. Have you tried that?

I use it for a stop bleed, dried, and powdered. Just pour it on, and it works immediately. No band-aid necessary. I can't pick enough to keep up with my hubby, who is on blood thinners. I provide some for a friend who owns a restaurant. He likes it so well he had asked me for a burn salve of some sort. Does anyone have a good burn salve recipe?

I would really like to know about doses for the diffrent types like salves, tinctures or edibles of not only plantain but all your different herbs. Is there a recommended amount, times per day or length of use that is most beneficial or not recommended to exceed? Thanks!

What did you use for a reference for your alc% in the plantain tincture? If fresh I thought you needed more than 50%.

Unfortunately my yard doesnt have this growing in it. I do have a massive amount of Canadian thistle and am torn on how to get rid of it without ruining the other "weed" growing around it. What is the best way to plant this so it doesnt overgrow? Potted plant? A larger above ground planter?
