1:51 Display expert here. It's actually 3840 across, not 4096. 4K in consumer TVs and devices is 3840x2160. 4096x2160 is a cinema resolution, something a bit different. Also, sapphire glass is way stronger than regular glass, so it's definitely something to be excited about. Way more resistant against scratches too :)

Have you even looked at the price of actual game boys lately? They are at price parody or accounting for inflation worth much more than they were 25 years ago. Buying a game boy color in good condition and then putting a good color screen mod in it will cost you 200 dollars. I don't see this being out to lunch except it won't increase in value like the OG will keep doing. I literally just spent 120 dollars CAD on a decent, not perfect Pokemon yellow for my 10 year old.

I have a personal beef with Palmer Luckey. I run an open-source project called Anduril, and after that project became established, Luckey made a fkn AI-powered autonomous murder bot company using the same name. This causes headaches for my project to this day. I also do a lot of Linux stuff. Mostly Debian-based, but NixOS has a lot of interesting ideas and is one of very few genuinely fresh and different distros out there. So I've been meaning to try it and maybe switch. But then the same guy took an interest in the same distro, and has been poaching their developers and trying to steer the project. Dammit. Then I got into retro handhelds, and now he's making this junk. I'd really like him to stay away from things I care about.

As an owner of an analogue pocket who mostly plays gbc games (niche lol) i considered the modretro BECAUSE of the sapphire display. Its more scratch resistent which would make me want to pocket the thing more often. My analogue pocket rarely actually leaves my house and when it does its in a fancy case because i dont want to damage it. Maybe sapphire and metal alloys would actually get me playing games more often when im out and about.

I mean, its a metal gameboy colour with an easily replaceable battery method and Sapphire screen that will only get scratched by diamond, I want to love the Analogue, but the battery is somewhat non-replaceable and tricky to track down. My Modretro will always have AA's that you can find anywhere. It acts as a webcam when you plug it into a computer which is cool, and its well made. Personally, its worth it to me.

Yeah. From what I've seen from multiple reviews, the thing is well built, AAs give more flexibility, and the screen is as authentic as possible without sacrificing convenience. It knows what it wants to be, a better GBC, nothing more, and it does that to an almost perfect degree. The only valid point might be the fact that it's overpriced, but at the same time if I was really hardcore into GB and GBC I would probably get one too. Plus, I already have an FP-GBC so I don't need one, but I can appreciate the Chromatic's craft.

With another post saying you can buy them only large bulks from the manufacturer. I did a check on ebay aswell yeilding no results. Maybe they are out there though and i just cant find them. 4K is 2160p vertically. Horizontal grids don't matter when talking about pixel density. You can have a 10000x2160p display, but all it will ever be is another ultra (very ultra) wide screen. with a "4K" resolution. What we call 4K is literally 2K. What we call 2K is literally 1.5K. It's all marketing.

@@ekimolaos Also 2K is actually 1K (1080p). DCI has designated 2K as 2048x1080, while 4K is double that at 4096x2160, as you pointed out. I'm personally fine with 2K being 1920x1080 (FHD) and 4K being 3840x2160 (4K), since they're "close enough" to 2000 and 4000 horizontal pixels respectively. HOWEVER, 2K being 2560x1440p is the worst sin tech marketing ever created. It should've been 2.5K.

Chromatic is my go-to handheld for GB/C games. Buttons, screen, sound, feel is a notch above everything else. Easily modded to get the boot logo I also have unmodded GBCs, modded GBCs, Gb Boy Colours, Analogue Pocket, and an Analogue Pocket Aluminum Edition

Great video on the Chromatic, man! I needed to make the choice between an Analogue and the Chromatic when the Chromatic came out. For the same price I get to play an additional GBA, Neo Geo Pocket cartridges, get a x10 resolution / bigger screen and get to purchase a doc for home console use like a Gamecube Gameboy Player? Sold on the Analogue. The only thing that kept me a bit hesitant was the yellowish, warmer tones on the whites, and that 95% of the people on the internet saying the Chromatic was better lol At the end of the day, the white balance thing is a non-issue when you have it in front of you, and the quality of the Pocket is superb even though its plastic. Got it one week after purchasing. No regrets. Chromatic shouldve been a bit less pricey in my opinion . . . But hey, that nostalgia marketing more than makes up for any shortcomings lol

I worked at GameStop when the first word on Modretro Chroma came around. Loved a couple of the colorways, but GS only let you pre-order the GS blk/gry/red color. Very sad. But being someone who still has all their original consoles to play these games, plus a couple customs i built, the price point just wasn't worth it. It's a cool handheld, but to only play the big cartridges even output to another screen did not justify getting one.

I’ve handled one and I will say this is about as close as you can get to that feeling of playing the original game boy color. To me that’s the high we always chase in this hobby is trying to make our games play and look and feel like they used to. This device comes very close and I think that’s where the hype is at and in my opinion is kind of deserved.

It's an interesting point that perhaps the sapphire crystal lens is completely unnecessary. Original GameBoy lenses scratched easily because they were plastic. (and it was good that they were plastic, because we didn't want literal children to slice open their fingies on a toy.) Modern replacement lenses can be bought in glass, no problem whatsoever, and the people buying them are also not children. They will put it on their console and then DON'T drag it around on the floor. Instead they'll handle it very carefully, put it in a case, lay it on a shelf, etc. Sapphire makes sense on device that see a lot of 'rough terrain' like phone screens and watch faces, for everything else mineral glass would probably be perfectly fine.

I think one of the strengths of the Chromatic is specifically that it is ONLY trying to be a Game Boy Color, so it can laser focus on trying to deliver the best experience it can. Everyone already has retro devices or modern hardware that can play pretty much everything, and the Analogue Pocket has a few compromises to support multiple physical formats like the cartridge slot not fully securing its games, and having tiny little shoulder buttons. From hands-on usage with the Analogue Pocket, I also wasn't a fan of their d-pad. Those are reasons why the Chromatic as a product interested me, though I've yet to get one.

I got my Chromatic yesterday and have have done some Super Mario Land with it thus far. I do like the console. Its a very well made piece of kit. My opinion is coming from someone who never used a DMG, Pocket, or Light. My first Gameboy is my Gameboy Color. That is the experience im used to and this scratches that itch. That being said, I will probably sell this before long. I will enjoy the experience, ill play through the GBC games I have yet to play through using it. I dont need it to play GBA games because I have an GBA-SP snd a Micro I prefer using. Ill use whatever money I get from it to mod my GBC with a backlight, or get another FPGA system.

To me the point of this thing is the small details, like the IR port, toughness (hence the metal and glass), the 1x1 screen, etc. Are these things really necessary to enjoy GB and GBC games? No, but they are important if you wanna be super nit picky, and that's what this is made for. One reason I'd be excited for the GBA is that it should have a link port that can connect to a Gamecube, which would be really cool for a handful of games with a modern screen and charging options... VERY niche. I do wish they would get on top of that rechargeable battery pack, I have no interest in getting back to AA batteries. Sure, you can swap them when they get low... but they are heavy, expensive, and you really better hope you don't forget to take them out when you leave your console alone longer than you intend to and find it full of corrosion!

Bob, I wrote an extensive comparison of the modretro chromatic and analogue pocket screens on r/gameboy, I suggest you give it a read. I find the yellowed parchment tones of the pocket wayyy too yellow. The blues might be off on the chromatic, but all in all I'll take the chromatics colors over the too yellow browns and greens and parchment whites of the pocket. Youre right that at the end of the day it's splitting hairs.

What I mean by that is that he feels that he must be the protagonist on everything. I also don't like that he's funding weapons either, I find it morally reprehensible no matter how he tries to justify it. At 10:15 Bob states that he cannot get monochrome games showing the same colors as they did on the original GBC with the color palettes available with Pocket. His Pocket's menu shows that the options Custom and Load Custom Palette greyed out. These options were added in firmware v2.0 in December of 2023. Updating the firmware would allow him to select a palette file on an SD card that will add up to 14 colors to the game. There are existing palette files linked to a reddit topic which can be found with a simple search which include all the predefined palettes included with the original GBC and applied at boot.

The Analogue Pocket is by far the better choice. It plays like a dozen systems and all generations of gameboy. It’s also marginally more expensive. Also, it has a dock that allows you to play your games on an HDTV.

Since the Chromatic's firmware is open-source (it's literally just a port of the MisTER GBC core) someone has already modded it and produced a custom firmware that has your "pea green soup" filter for GB games. I like mine and use it daily to play ALL THE POKEMONS HACKZORS! I already have an Analogue Pocket, FPGBC, and GBC w/AMOLED screen as well as a New 3DS, 2DSXL, DS Lite, GBA, and GBA SP (both I modded myself with IPS displays) as well as several emulator handhelds and a slew of InsideGadgets and BennVenn flashcarts as well as Everdrive X7 and GBA Mini flashcarts but I'm on a GBC Pokemon ROM hack kick right now and the Chromatic is where it's at for that due to extreme battery life with rechargeable HW Li-ION AA batteries as well as hand comfort when it comes to extended play times. I hope Modretro makes a GBA soon.

20:01 Unlike most emulating consoles, I noticed that this actually has the link cable port on it. I personally would have no reason every to pay $200 for a handheld emulator, but having a GBC or GBA option with a link port on it could change my outlook. If they get all aspects of the link port and cable to 100% work and interface with actual hardware, that would be groundbreaking. It is perhaps something that should be explored in a separate video.

I like really well built things, and I like good dpads. Chromatic seems to be better than my Analog Pocket in both of those categories. I don't own a chromatic, but it seems to justify it's price with screen and build quality alone. I find myself not using my Analog Pocket that often just because I don't like the d-pad.

Chromatic's D-Pad is awesome. It's not a pivoted D-Pad, but I rank it up there with the Vita & DS Phat. I wanted to get an AP when it came out but I care about D-Pad quality and that was a no-go. Also their whole super-limited fomo runs (When they didn't even have regular APs for sale...) soured me on them. I like how much Lucky has done helping Ukraine defend itself, even though I'm not a fan of his politics otherwise. Very glad I purchased one.

Sapphire glass is a big deal if you've ever owned a nice watch. And the price is kind of insane if the screen actually is bespoke. The cost of setting up tooling for custom screens is insane as fuck. That's why so many laptops and TVs use identical panels and we rarely see odd sizes or shapes. It's also why new cars will be electronically totalled when the screen with your speedometer dies and no OEM is willing to set up tooling for aftermarket ones.

The screen play for me is what has me still using it. Its color saturation is night and day compared to the FPGBC. If I were to rank the three, it's Chromatic, Analogue Pocket, FPGBC, and finally OEM GBC. I'll probably go back to my Kiwi GBC when I replace the screen. I do hope the company continues making original Gameboy cartridges. I've heard good things about Dragonhym.

I think I'll keep my Game Boy Color (OEM) with a modded IPS screen. Don't need to spend over $200 for an FPGA when I have original hardware. Plus, I also have a Analogue Pocket. The 'ModRetro' is quite late to the party.

I bought one (the gamestop exclusive one) without doing research, i love it. Its great, but i hate that i supported the guy, buy the time i realized who he was i couldn't return it. As a gb/gbc i would say 9/10, if it came with a rechargeable battery bank it would be a 10/10. But that being said i would dock 100 points because of how shitty the owner is. Will i continue to use it? Of course, i spend a lot of money. Would i recommend? If you like the guy and don't think he's shitty. Buy one. If you think he's awful (he is) then don't buy it. -1000/10

I wish I could get the Chromatic's LCD and larger D-pad in the FPGBC, I think that would be ideal for me. As nice as the metal is, it doesn't feel as good to play on, and the shape isn't as easy-to-hold as the original GBC curves.

Personally, I think the chromatic is aimed at a different audience than the retro handle community. It's more meant for those who want to play their original game collection on newer hardware. Or those who like minimalism, like the fact that you only have one game with you. I have an analogue pocket, and multiple retro handhelds (at least 10). The chromatic lives in my pocket with one game to play. I can be playing in less than 3 seconds. It's simple, And sometimes simple is value.
