I remember a buddy of mine being asked about his Vietnam ribbon by a small child and he replied "That is my 'I was there' ribbon." The youngster then pointed to his Purple Heart ribbon and asked about it to which my buddy replied, "That is my 'I was there and forgot to duck ribbon' ". That satisfied the child's curiosity. lol "forgot to duck" My grandfather was in WWII. He was 3rd Marine Division & he was on Iwo & Guam. When my cousins & I were young we were constantly asking him questions & he downplayed all his decorations. In the 70's he taught math & engineering & he always told us kids that he was an engineer in the war & never saw combat. He also said he lost his finger by closing it in a door. We never knew the truth until years after he passed & we researched his service record. He actually saw some heavy fighting but I assume he didn't want to talk to much about it, especially when we were kids so he downplayed his service & said he did things we found boring. He tells us he helped repair airstrips & designed docs & we quit asking questions. Curiosity satisfied. Had he told us he went into Iwo Jima on day 4 or 5 we would have hit him with endless requests for stories.

i got mine 18 april 1988 onboard the USS Simpson (ffg-56) in the persian gulf for operation praying mantis. we were the first ship in naval history to sink a enemy ship with missiles.

Sorry to disappoint, but you may have never heard about us. But congrats on your work. Did you hear of the USS Yorktown (CG-48) crossed Khadafi’s line of death in the Gulf of Sidra and launched 2 harpoons. First one was a dud. Second one hit and sank La Combatante II class missile patrol boat that was sent towards out battlegroup. A6 intruder off the USS Saratoga sank the other which was Nanuchka II class. As a Chaplain I can tell you two things about this, it is almost impossible to get these combat ribbons, which is fine with me, my job is to help soldiers and families. In a FAB and a mortore round coming in is the only way I could see this happening. Two, we need to do our MOS with pride and if you don't get tons of ribbons, so what. I have seen too much stupid because soldiers wanted the CAR. For the record I have three ribbons for signing up and breathing. I don't even wear them. No one questions a Chaplain on these matters. I enjoy being a 56A.

That would be interesting to see. When I was in (USMC) we had a Infantry Platoon Commander(1stLt) go to the Navy to be a Chaplain. He didn't have a CAR though but I can see how that happens.

I earned a CAR USNavy Vietnam 71 to 75. I never thought much about it as a swabby but marines I worked with in shipyards were impressed and valued it. I was a nuclear power machinist mate, top secret clearance but wanted electronics. I met lots of marines in the shipyards while getting EE electronics engineering degree under VA GI bill.

Hello my father was a Korean War vet 7th Div King Co. He was always proud of his Combat Infantry Badge. He passed away last April. My father like many other veterans never told me much about the war only that it was terrible. The only things my father did tell me were that he fought at PORK CHOP HILL and he made it all the way up to the Yalu River and saw China and he did alot of fighting at the 38th parralell. I wish he had been able to tell me more . I miss him very much and I'm very proud of him.

My grandfather was also in King Company of the 7th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was with the 31st Infantry Regiment and also fought at Pork Chop Hill. April of 1953. He too earned a CIB and the Purple Heart for wounds he received on July 23, 1953, just 4 days before the war ended. My grandfather passed away in 1987. His name was Bruce D. Yeager.

I had several MOS during my time in the Corps but almost my entire career was spent with infantry units and I retired as a Tactical Intell Officer. I DO have a CAR from Desert Storm when I served with 3/23 attached to 8th Marines and 2nd MarDiv. I have always disliked the term POG for several reasons: First - every Marine goes through boot-camp regardless of MOS; Second - enemy fire is no respecter of person or MOS; and Third - Grunts always forget they can't do a damn thing without beans, bullets, band-aids, and information. George Patton [or someone] said it best: "Amateurs think tactics, professionals think logistics". It takes every Marine and every MOS for the Corps to be successful. I enlisted in February '69 and thought I was going to the 'nam also, which would have been three wars in 35 years but that was about the time the Corps started drawing down in Vietnam so I ended up in Kansas City, MO [I know, I know...] at the Marine Corps Finance Center where I watched the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in '70 and met my first ex-wife. As I said, I had several MOS' during my time and my first one was Disbursing Clerk. After my first enlistment I began my journey through different MOS, including 'Map Compiler', and 'Ops Clerk' before I became an 0231 Intell Analyst, and, finally, 0205 Tactical Intell Officer. I was promoted Warrant Officer on November 10, 1990, and with 3dBn 23dMar departed shortly thereafter for Desert Storm as the Battalion S-2 where I earned my CAR. So, yes, 'only' twice in 35 years.... ;)

Dudley J Garidel Jr I too had a double mos of 3043 and 0411 which was a supply administration clerk and a mimms clerk which is a supply related field. I never wanted to be a grunt or anything to do it but I ended up attached to a grunt unit. I am glad to see that someone has recognized that the so called pogs do more than what people think. The times make the man, no one would have heard of Gen G.Patton for example if he had not been in the right place at the right time. I was in the 1st Gulf War (Desert Storm) as an 0311 3/3 attached to 1st Mar Div. I have a CAR, and I am ashamed to admit, the times were against us. I didn't fire a shot from my rifle, but was however involved with a 155mm cannon (FO) which I went to school for before all that stuff started. As far as action after Sept 2001, my hat is off to all of you including POGs. Just think how long all that shit has been going on? There are a lot of necessary people out there all over the place with many different jobs. We can't win as individuals! I don't know all the statistics from the 1st Gulf War, but I know 17 or so people way back in the rear lost their lives doing their jobs due to the lucky shot from them Iraqi assholes and a scud! I was a Marine Corps tanker in Afghanistan and our crew was awarded CAR’s but we never shot a round in our tour. It was based upon the ROE’s and we never had positive identification on any hostiles after any of the IED incidents, but the manner in which we reacted and responded to secure perimeters was what mattered for us. And this was awarded before our tank even got hit. Every CAR has a story, just like the pharmacist.

As a Brit veteran we are always bemused by the medal ribbons you guys get. We only have two types: Campaign Medals where you have to be in a dedicated campaign area for at least 30 days; Gallantry awards. From Mid (Mentioned in Despatches) to Victoria Cross. There are the various qualification badges but you wear them elsewhere. So yes we do take the piss a bit but we have fought side by side for the last hundred years and as the toast goes (when not clearing the bar of lesser mortals (French, Italian, etc) "Same mud, same blood, same honour!"

My Grandpa was a SeaBee (CB, Construction Battalion) in the Navy, and was deployed in Vietnam. He would tell us this story about how the camp they were in was never really in danger, the worst that had happened to them was a rocket landed in their baseball field (much to their dismay). But the higher ups at the camp had heard that the VietCong/NVA were going to try to overrun the camp, so that night, my Grandpa sat anxiously in a machine gun pillbox, when he began to fall asleep. He woke up the next morning, nothing had happened overnight. Funnily enough, he had earned a CAR from this experience.

That's because the CAR is only for Navy/Marines/USCG. The Air Force has a CAM (which also has a ribbon to go with it, obviously). The Army, as you should know, has the CIB, CMB, and the CAB (which, admitedly, didn't exist when you were in).

I know im late to the party lol, just came across the video. I earned my CAR for combat in 2003 invasion of Iraq. At that time you had to recieve and return fire in order to qualify. Even though we took fire on multiple occasions, not every Marine in the unit was awarded the CAR because their mos had them doing other duties such as driving for the 3531's if mounted, while the firefight was raging. I was injured on a future deployment. I couldn't reenlist in the USMC due to injuries, but hey the army took me and gave me a sweet reenlistmeant bonus and choice of duty station (Germany was the Shize!). I earned my CAR with B 1/11, and a volunteer who stayed longer and went with B 1/7. I was awarded the Army CIB during my 4th deployment. In the army ribbons and medals are classified differently. So I was able to wear my CAR on my ribbon rack and my CIB pin above.

Purple Heart isn't rare enough anymore. Back in the 90's (92-98) usually, a Marine with a Purple Heart was usually a SgtMaj or Col that had served in Vietnam. My Battalion CO (1/9) was Lt.Col Silva- He was actually a platoon commander with 1/9 in Vietnam. Both him and the SgtMag had multiple Purple Hearts. Semper Fi guys

Everyone during all 3 of my deployments had a CAR. I went to the marine corps ball in 05 post Iraq every single person had one. Now that I am older closer to retirement it’s weird seeing E6 and above without a car. Honestly if they enlisted near the time I did with a combat MOS I always wonder how they never got in one engagement.

I feel bad for all the folks who never received one simply because they were not allowed to return fire. I know guys who would receive fire on al taqadum air base daily, but they were not even allowed to load their weapons. They would only be able to send out air support and direct artillery to the attackers.

My No. 2 son is an Army CW2 fixed wing pilot. Prior time he was Army A-Team SF 7th Gp Wpns Sgt and a Marine Rifleman with 1/8 Marines. Fought in the Battle of Fallujah in 2004 where he earned a CAR. To this day as an Army CW2 he still wears his 2nd Marine Division patch as his combat patch and wears his CAR instead of a CIB with his pilot wings and airborne wings. As a retired Army 1SG I support him all the way.

Great vid. The CAR IS a weird award...that is overdue for an update. I was awarded mine for the Battle of Kuwaiti International Airport during the 1st Gulf War...having participated in the biggest Armor battle in Marine Corps history... My participation was as a Mechanized Marine with Kilo 3/9. The battle was fast and furious resulting in only a handful of dead and wounded Marine. Compared to our Iraqui enemy we fared very well..thank God. Recalling the experience I remember us taking machine gun and sabot round fire from friendlies and enemy....it was a bloody and lopsided chaotic melee with rounds richoceteing off our tank dodging and weaving past anti-tank rounds and mines as we sat on crates of 60mm mortar HE rounds!....praying that we wouldn't get hit...no doubt in my mind that had we taken a direct hit by a sabot...we'd have gone up like the fourth of July...I still have nightmares...especially about one of our corporal's who was claustrophobic and freaked out during the battle and grabbed his grenade threatening to pull the pin if we didn't let him out!...those are 3 days I'll never forget to my grave. What is odd to me...is that a few years later wed see combat again as we were shipped off to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope running into Clan fighters and engaging them taking fire and receiving sniper and machine gun fire (even 1 casualty in my company, our corpsman took an AK round to the chest). Everybody took sniper fire and returned fire in my platoon at some point and time.....yet all we received was an Expeditionary Medal from our Country for that Expedition, but no CAR Ribbon Star. So I don't get what the point of it is if the Dept. of the Navy will not show consistancy in awarding it...Also, it's a disgrace how the Army awards a specific Combat Action/Infantry Badge and the Marines and Navy don't. They should at least make a medal for the C.A.R. ribbon... or just award us with a bronze star instead for being under fire and returning it too many times during those years....we weren't hero's but we weren't cowards either and did everything the Marines asked us to do...always pressing forward on the enemy...while taking fire or otherwise...

I went from Active Duty Maine Corps to National Guard. They saw that I had a combat action ribbon and assumed I rated a Combat Action Badge. I didn't realize until later that the CAB is for POGs and that I should have gotten a CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) instead since I'm infantry. But I would have to get an order signed for me to wear the CIB on my uniform and give up my CAR. I said screw it and wore the CIB and 1st MarDiv patch on my sleeve anyways. Honestly, after checking the policy, it's pretty vague on what is allowed and what isn't when it comes to prior service.

To wear the CIB you have to have been in an army infantry unit in a combat situation. As for the 1st marine division patch, the USMC quit wearing divisions patches in 1947, so unless you severed in WWII, it's not authorized.

@@rph111745Not true you could apply to have your CAR transferred to either a CIB, CAB, or CMB depending on your capacity served in during combat. As for his patch it is authorized as well and many Soldiers attached to Marine units in combat zones proudly wear the 1st or 2nd Marine Division patch as a combat patch. Seen examples of CAR transfer and Marine patch wearing in the Army myself

Quite proud of my CAR as well as my Navy Achievement Medal with combat V.... I call it, "I saw the elephant badge"! Spent an aggregate of 26-months In-Country Vietnam as a combat camera man between 1966 and 1971... However, I wish that this award had been in the form of a badge like the Army Combat Infantry Badge.

I think the Navy should have made a decoration, like the Army's Combat Infantrymen's Badge, one that stands out distinctly from the other decorations. My father won 2 Bronze star Medals with the combat "V" device fighting in the Pacific but he told me the decoration he was most proud of was his Combat Infantrymen's Badge.

I was an Infantryman in the US Army and retired. The requirements changed after Grenada from the old Vietnam policy and previous supposedly. Many guys from the 82nd Airborne who were Infantry came back from that short action with Combat Infantrymans Badges without firing a shot or being engaged in combat with the exception of the Ranger Battalions that jumped in first or were air landed by transport planes to reinforce immediately the other Rangers already on the ground to include other Army Special Operations like SF and Delta. Rangers, SF, and Delta are elite Infantrymen and are awarded the CIB even though SF and Delta have a separate MOS in the 18 series. Majority came from the 11 series which is Infantry. In Vietnam the regular policy was every Infantryman had to be in the combat zone for more than 30 days to get his CIB. In those 30 days as an Infantryman you are going to face combat no matter what because you have a whole 12 months to be there. If an infantryman gets killed or wounded before the 30 days in combat then its automatic because they have met the criteria of engaging and being engaged by the enemy. Panama 1989-90 fell into the Grenada category which again some Infantry units and Army SF and Delta units did engage in combat and most did not but were deployed into the combat zone as reinforcements got awarded CIBs. Desert Storm 1990-91 when they pushed into Kuwait and Southern Iraq some Infantry units did engage in combat and others just rolled or Air Assaulted into a position into enemy territory got their CIBs without firing a shot. Yes entire Infantry divisions and battalions got CIBs either they did real combat or were present in the combat zone during those days but under the Army's wisdom they were part of the attack so that constitutes as engaging the enemy. This is not to degrade these Infantrymen. Because it could have turned bloody or worse during Panama and Desert Storm. These Infantrymen have trained for the worse scenario if it happened to them. So yes these Infantrymen who did participate did deserve their CIBs and yes they were part of the attack plan. Then after 9/11/2001 Afghanistan and Iraq. The Army really tightened up on Infantry soldiers being awarded the CIB. As an Infantryman you had to really engage or be attacked by the enemy and sworn statements had to be written by your fellow soldiers and leaders to what you did to justify you in getting that award. Your FOB or Forward Operating Base being mortared or rocketed by indirect fire doesn't constitute an automatic CIB unless the mortar or rocket came very close to you and blew up. Then again sworn statements have to be written by you, other soldiers who witnessed it to make it happen. So during the Iraq and Afghanistan heavy combat era some Infantrymen did not get their CIBs just because they were with their unit. The sworn statement has to be written by witnesses in order for the soldier to be awarded one. After action reports are carefully scrutinized by their chained of command to determine who was where or what they did as witnessed and put into the report for the commander. This is to call bullshit on soldiers who didn't participate in combat and only award those who did their part. This included officers also besides regular Joes. Also I read that when a former Army Infantryman who was awarded a CIB on his DD214 and joins either the Marines or Navy by those services policy would be converted to the Combat Action Ribbon. Yes I do respect the CIB and the CAR because it has to be won under fire or be in a combat zone if you happen to be engaged when it does happen or not. Doesn't matter! If you got it, you got it. For me I got mines in Panama when I was a machinegunner in an Airborne Infantry Battalion. Later in Iraq I had the honor of presenting and pinning CIBs to my soldiers at the end of my 2 tours with 2 different Infantry battalions I was with in combat with in my 2 years there.

I grew up Navy for 5 years as a kid living with my uncle who was a CS and his rating was a CPO. He was always on the fleet's carriers. We were home ported in San Diego. When he was not at sea he ran the mess galleys on Coronado Island like North Island and the Amphibious Base. There I got to watch F-4s and F-14s take off and land and watch the SEAL trainees train. The Navy has some very dangerous equipment and do some dangerous training. Bottom line is military service is very hazardous no matter what branch you join or your job in it. The sea is a wide an vast expanse and it would suck to have a ship start to sink either by accident or combat damage. I have respect for Sailors.

I was a Combat Medic(68W MOS) for the 1/501st Airborne(Ft. Richardson, AK. under 25th INF), served 15 months in Iraq where i earned the Combat Medic Badge while on patrol with my 11B/11C brothers. In my battalion, you had to actually enter into combat (get shot at, engage with the enemy, be within 50 feet of an IED) to earn the CIB, CMB or CAB.

NICKY MGTV: To some the term POG may have negative connotations but every assignment comes with the need of dedicated persons, in the field, on board a ship, or in an office. My attitude is that it was a POG who made sure I got my mail as soon as possible. The POG also kept our SRB (military file) up to date to ensure I got my R&R in time. The POG also kept a record when I was to be rotated back to the world on time. The POG checked and re-checked to make sure we were re-supplied with C Rations and ammo when in the bush. And guess who was making sure our pay was available when we were in the bush, so we had something when we got back to the rear for a few days. Yes sir, I had/have total respect for the POG and appreciate all the stress that accompanies the assignment. Thank you for your service, brother.

Gainey Gainey: Did complaining change anything? Someone forgot to buy this person a beer. How can you change someone's actions if you don't really know them? Not long after arrival to DaNang, I was assigned as an SRB clerk because I knew how to type, our unit clerk went on R&R. I accepted the duty assignment and performed as best I could. When he returned I asked the Sgt. Major for reassignment to a line unit. He chose H&S Co. because if need-be I could do the same again without all the paperwork, although we were attached to line units. I didn't have to but was pleased to later learn several lieutenants requested that I remain as a clerk because I rotated teams, upon request of course, back to the rear for a few days at a time, based on time in the bush.It was an incredible moral booster! I understood the importance because of previous assignments and perhaps if someone were to buy the POG in your unit a beer/soda he could have been properly schooled. I didn't question assignments, nor did I question those of others, and though I liked being in the rear, I got hooked the the adreneline of a night ambush, etc.

I am a Marine and was in Vietnam 1969-1970. My SRB shows that I was awarded the CAR in January 1970. The ORIGINAL Combat Action Ribbon was ONLY for ENLISTED Marines, and Navy Corpsmen who served in combat with Marines. As you stated, the criteria is acceptable performance in actual combat. Thanks for an interesting and informative video - in particular how it has spread to the Navy and Coast Guard. (I am continually amazed at the number of people who cannot name the Coast Guard as one of the country's armed forces.)

The Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security-used to be part of the Department of Transportation. They may assist the Navy during wartime, but are are primarily a police force with the authority to arrest people at sea while protecting the U.S. coast. This is in addition to many other duties, not the least of which is Search and Rescue. The U.S. Navy does not have the authority to make arrests at sea unless something has changed in the last couple of decades.

Former 0313 here with a Combat Action Ribbon. I can say first hand that we had drivers in our LAV's in Iraq 2003 that got the CAR without having to fire a shot. I don't know why it happened exactly but our entire unit did get CAR's. I was a gunner on an LAV-25 and I did receive and return fire on the enemy, so I expected to get mine. I was with 2nd LAR Charlie Company 2nd Platoon. We were called the Barbarians as a self appointed nickname when we went to Iraq in 2003 and when we got home our Battalion name was changed to "The Destroyers". Because that is what the Iraqi's would say to the interpreters when an LAV-25 would drive by.

So typically in the infantry it's awarded at individual squad or platoon levels. It's unlikely that any element smaller than a squad will take fire, and proceed to close in with and destroy the enemy. It is possible however, if a FOB begins to take fire, that an entire rifle company returns fire from inside the FOB. In that case they would most likely award every marine/sailor in that company with a CAR.

Ethan Higgins Yes, it's not entirely unheard of. As I'm sure you're aware, to receive the CAR, you must actually be 1) directly fired upon, and 2) returning direct fire in an effort to close with and destroy the enemy. If someone witnesses you not returning fire and completely failing to function in any reasonable or productive manner while under fire, you will not receive a CAR. If an infantryman does this, he will likely be removed from his platoon, and attached to the H&S company within his battalion where he poses less of a risk to himself and the marines/sailors around him.

Dylan Rutan: Unless you are assigned to H&S Co. and attached to various line units because of your MOS. My specific MOS was 0351. In Vietnam some of us were trained with 106 recoil-less rifle, Mortars, M-60, M-79 Grenade Launcher, Flame Thrower, Land Mine Warfare & Booby Traps, etc. Eventually, every one of us earned the CAR, many times over. But, I agree totally with Gen. "Mad Dog" Mattis when he said. "The most important 6 inches on the battlefield is between your ears." But, as a unit we subscribed to another of his edicts, which is, "I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f--- with me, I'll kill you all." Our units personal motto in Nam... "We all go down together." Semper Fi!

I Am a Marine, with Time in 68-70. We started seeing the CAR on Returning from South East Asia War Games, 1969. The new Ribbon, from The 0311's that saw Combat, up close and Personal. The was a Cpl, I met in The Phillipnes, and he wore the CAR and other Ribbons. The Scoop was, You had to be in at Least 6 Fire Fights, Contact for Those from The South, to Rate the CAR. I was Wounded my first Month, and Bingo, I was awarded the PH, I should Have Ducked Medal. SF Devil Dogs.

As my duty stations over there went from DaNang to Phu Bai , to the USS OKINAWA , to Quang Tri Air base , we , my squadron buddies and the SeaBees built parts of it together . I honestly cannot tell you at what point I may have earned it . I was with HMM-163 , a UH-34, helicopter squadron , so almost daily we had some birds getting and giving fire on the way in or out . I was in Vietnam, 68-79 with 2/12 artillery unit , my mos was 440, logistics, but I went on patrols, ambushes, drove ammo to Con tien, Camp Carrol, Took artillery fire from NVA across DMZ, had rockets attacks, spend my last 2 weeks, on LZ razor back, firing 105 on an operations, Fired my rifle on ambushes while driving 105 ammo deuce and halfs but you know what I apply for a CAR around 3 years ago, and I never heard a word back. All I can say screw them, I know what I did. I know how many hundreds of rounds that were fire at us during TET!

I used to work with a guy that had the same story. He was wounded during a rocket attack (Vietnam) and applied for the CAR years later. It was denied because he wasn't engaged in "offensive operations" against the enemy when he was wounded. I'm not sure if the criteria is the same today.

I would doubt that if you were to act as you describe in combat and got shot that you would receive a Purple Heart. You'd most likely get a court-martial and at least a bad conduct discharge. There are strict criteria for the Purple Heart and the Military Order of the Purple Heart has protested some awards in the past because the medal was awarded for actions that do not meet criteria.

You mentioned that this ribbon can be awarded retroactively . I am putting together a small tribute to my father. He served 29 years in the USMC. He retired in 1956, before this ribbon was created. He was a China Marine before WW2, transferred to Corregidor shortly before the war started. Those on Corregidor were in constant combat with Japanese forces for 6 months till they finally surrendered . My father ended up being a POW for 44 months, the duration of the war. Am I correct in assuming that he and any of the other members of the USMC and Navy, that were there, qualify for this ribbon

The Navy Combat Action Ribbon is retroactive to 7 December 1941 and the Coast Guard Combat Action Ribbon is retroactive to 1 May 1975. USMC is part of the Navy.

For many FMF sailors, if returning fire wasn’t done to earn a CAR, most were awarded the Fleet Marine Force Combat Operation Insignia (EGA ribbon device) to go on what ever corresponding campaign/service ribbon. Many also do not understand the criteria to earn it either.

In conversing with my peers in the USN and some USMC chaps, we always compare things as I'm Canadian. We point to each others ribbons and ask what they represent. All of our ribbons are for medals whereas you chaps seem to have a mix of both. A number of the ribbons seemed to be for courses or qualifications that would be just an entry into our Unit Employment Records or UER. It's always great to see what our peers are doing out there. I did four years in the Marine Corps (1977-1981) Obviously I was not in combat because there was no combat during that time involving the United States Military, any branch. I was not infantry. I have been called a REMF (look that up) I've even been told that I was not even a real Marine or a real veteran because of that. I signed the same paperwork everyone else who joins the military does. I went through basic at Parris Island. I received extensive combat training, including crawling under barbed wire through the mud with my gear and rifle, with live fire overhead. Yes I knew I was safe, but that's not the point. HAD I been deployed into a combat situation, I would have gone, unlike many in the military that cried like babies when they were deployed to the middle east, many of these cowards were actually given general discharges (not dishonorable, like they should have been) I know there is a difference between those who have been in combat and those who have not. But it is not up to you. Your superiors make the decision who goes and who doesn't. Not you.

It involved military action, but not one shot was fired at the enemy. We kept wondering, why don't we do something? President Carter's "attempted" rescue mission (Operation Eagle Claw) was what they finally did, and we all know what happened. Three helicopters failed, the mission was aborted, and on the way out, one crashed , killing 8 troops. You can certainly call that military action, but there was no engagement with the enemy.

He also received a Purple Heart, Presidential unit Citation, Naval unit Accommodation and Republic of Vietnam cross of Gallantry w/palm. Not totally true on units, my ship the USS Caron DD 970 was awarded the CAR during Desert Storm, as were multiple other ships. Basically we were fired at i.e. exocet missiles and had to scramble in a mined area. We did fire off SRBOC as well as evasive maneuvers.

Many questions here. My DD214 called this the Navy Combat Action Ribbon, and it was issued to all the crew on the Coast Guard Cutter I was stationed aboard during it's deployment to Vietnam as part of the naval blockade during 1970-71 when the Coast Guard was part of the Dept of the Treasury.

People should remember that the British military issued separate 'Star' medals for World War II service in Italy, North Africa, France/Germany, Burma, the Pacific, Bomber Command, service in the Atlantic, etc., as well as a War Medal and a Defense Medal. My Dad served in Europe during the war as a U.S. Army combat medic and got a single service medal for his service in the ETO.

The way it was explained to me when I got my blood rifle(CIB), I performed my duties as an Infantryman satisfactory to the infantry unit I was assigned during which time I received fire from and returned fire to the enemy. It definitely drew a line between those with them and those without, even in country...

The Navy Comm and or Bronze Star can be earned in a combat or NON combat situation, the combat award medal is signified by a V device worn only on the MEDAL but not on the RIBBON, so the CAR ribbon signifies Combat Service.

The Ribbon in question is the Combat Action Ribbon. Only issued to Navy or Marines that's be in combat. Coast Guard has the same Ribbon but has 3 thin red, blue, red in the center.

When I was at K-Bay a bunch of grunts got loaned out to supply to assist in the annual inventory. Another bunch got FAPed over to the Base HQ/Aviation side chow hall for 6 months.

I have been awarded both the army CAB and CIB I am a retired 11b and during one of my deployments my squad was assigned to a logistics Company which removed us from our MOS parameters and our FOB was attacked we all put in for CIBs but were modified our awards due to not in our assigned mos at the time of the attack.

The CAR is dumb because you need to receive fire and give fire. There’s a combat engineer who has been blown up and found over 90 IED’s been shot at but because he was never given the order to fire he doesn’t have one.

My father who was in Navy as Radioman was recently issued the CAR. That was from a request to the Navy for replacement awards and it was added to his DD214. Je did several tours in Vietnam. He did go to shore with groups of marines but he doenst remember any enemy contact. Why was it issued?

Tommy Prince, a native canadian attached to the first special service force in anzio where the allies were pinned down for months in italy during ww2, used to sneak behind german lines at night and slit the throats of german sentries and in their trenches. Sometimes he would slit the throat of one, steal a canteen or boot of another in the same trench, then he would leave a card they had made up with the regimental emblem on it. The germans called them the devils brigade (check out the movie by that name). He was so feared that the germans moved their front line further back to where their artillery was no longer effective in shelling the allied beachhead which had kept them pinned down for so long and caused massive casualties. Tommy was awarded almost as many U.S. decorations as he was Canadian. He also fought in korea with the PPCLI and was attached to the regiment that won a presidential citation there as well.

Army is a tad bit different, the reason for the different combat badges is because the CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) is only issued to Infantry, the CMB (Combat Medical Badge) is only issued to medics, and the CAB (Combat Action Badge) is issued to all other fields.

Requirements fluctuate in the USMC- at one point you could get one if taking indirect fire. Also- in my opinion I think an individual should get initial respect for a CAR but still prove they’re a competent leader in the field. -USMC ‘09-15 CAR ‘12 OEF G. 2/5

The Combat Action Ribbon is both the highest ribbon the U.S. Navy can bestow, and the lowest award for heroism. I received the CAR for my service with Task Force 117, Mobile Riverine Force, Mekong Delta. A college friend of mine had served on the base along the My Tho River. We saw and later remembered each other, though we never met until college. My friend received a Purple Heart but not a CAR because he wasn't in a position to shoot back.
