I was awarded this medal back in 2004 or 2005 or sometime back then.. I served from 1985-2006 so I got the G.W.O.T. but not the expeditionary medal I was title 10 activated but didn't deploy to Iraq I deployed to Okinawa Japan and the Korean D.M.Z. so I got the Korean defense Service Medal which is a rare Medal to be awarded. I'm proud of my Medals they were all earned..

You should do some videos on the different ribbons that each state awards to National Guard soldiers. Although not each state awards their own ribbons, they are unique and would be an interesting topic. You could do one state per video and cover all the ribbons that state awards!

My duties during Desert Storm were in Germany where I was performing Counter Terrorist duties. We didn't have this medal.

Looks like an end to an era... I always thought they should have had a more selective award of GWOTSM so would be more valued and less automatic. I never considered it directly redundant to the NDSM because of its history of being awarded for prior wartime periods, however it does seem that way since GWOTSM blanked awarded for those 21 years. Great info thanks for the video!

The Marines have historically tried to pare down, limit and qualify all "at-a-boys" worn on our uniform. Until recent times, we had pretty much been successful.

As a civilian who lived through the Global War on Terror, but who was never in the military, and is not from the USA, and doesn't even live there, I still feel i should get some kind of medal for all the craziness. 🏅

To be fair, I often had a hard time explaining to my parents how cleaning the motor pool did its part in fighting Global Terrorism.

Lol, shoot as far as I was concerned, I joined the infantry to go to Afghanistan, I started learning Arabic and the crescendo to that journey was a month long stay at 29 palms and a 2 day battalion clear of a MOUT city complete with role players and translators, my entire section minus me and maybe two others was killed off within the first 40 minutes or so and I ended the day by jumping through windows with two mortar tubes we never used during night ops. That experience and helping train Marines and Navy SEALs for the upcoming MEU while tasked out to EOTG, those are the things I attribute to the GWOT in my head. My only regret was not having been a role player in the building the SEALs raided. I was sick as a dog that day and so we drove out to this one spot to simulate mortars. But I’d have liked to experience what it’s like to fight against a TIER one unit in simulated combat.

You served and did the job you were assigned to do. You don't need to explain anything to anyone.

I served on the Iron Curtain and was held at gunpoint by East Germans and Russians. Medals ZERO! We were always being attacked by RAF Bader Meinhof Gang and no terrorism medal 🤣 No National Defense service medal after I was inducted on April 30th 1975 during the Fall of Saigon. Medals and the black Beret given out like candy. The Black Beret was only allowed to CAV Regiment. My tattoos are my Medals. The DOD has screwed over Cold War Veterans. We faced the Soviet Union on the tip of the spear facing nuclear missiles, which I could visually see in the Fulda Gap.. The Cold War Veterans have been screwed and shit on.. Give them out to cruits who haven't gotten out of basic training and they get Medals🤣. FTA!!!!!

I didn’t get my GWOT after OSUT. I remember receiving a piece of fancy paper in 2016 a month after being in Kosovo saying I received it 😂 I remember I only got my NDSM and my pride Army ribbon during graduation.

Welcome to the DOD crap detail! When service members are reduced to filling slots with no recognition of faithful service. We Cold War veterans know all about this. We were dumped in 1983 by 110,000 with not even a thank you!

So are they going to take away my medal? Otherwise you have two medals doing the same thing. An era medal makes sense just like the Korean service ribbon.

This is off topic. The Army just announced a recruitment ribbon for Soldiers that help a recruiter enlistment an individual. Is there anyway you can do a video on this?
@RottenCore69 Жыл бұрын
No Milper message yet and no ribbon design has been announced. Army announced promotions for E1-E3 and promotion points for E4-E5. Max 40 promotion points and the ribbon can be award 4 times and additional awards will be denoted with a numeral. No announcement on whether or not it will also be eligible for the National Guard and the Reserves as well. EDIT Army Times announced that it will include the National Guard and Reserves.

I receive my GWOTSM in 2021. Since I received it prior to Sep 2022 am I still authorized to wear it on my uniform? I don’t want people looking at me strange because I’ve been in the service less than 4 years and haven’t seen combat.
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues Жыл бұрын
I don't see why you shouldn't wear it. It's fairly over abundant. I got out in 2020, so everyone had it. My foreign "service" was getting rocks thrown at me in Kosovo in 2014 every day. It was both underwhelming and annoying, but I got a bunch of shiny medals for it (Nato Balkans Medal and DANCON medal look very nice). In 2013 it was a pretty big deal not to have a deployment patch and be in for more than 3 years, but less and less people actually have tours and deployments so it's to be expected now.
@michaeldouglass8592Ай бұрын
Yes. You wear it under the authorization of the time you were awarded.
