Obligatory mention of the fact that this is where the word "touché", used during debate to acknowledge that the other person has made a good point, comes from. Before the electronic scoring system, fencing was refereed using an honour system, where the fencers were expected to be honest about being hit. Indeed, when you were hit, you were supposed to say "touché", French for "touched"; as in, you're acknowledging that you've been hit by your opponent. The word is used in the same way today, except during battles of words, not swords.

To be fair, it is worth adding that before the Olympics, as a result of judging, he took only second place. When the cheating was noticed, he was given a sword for the books and he won 9 fights out of 10. He was almost number 1 anyway. And he drank his cup to the end and was ostracized. Immediately after the incident, the USSR volleyball team conspired to defenestrate him. He was stripped of all awards, including the country's highest order, stripped of titles, position, everything was taken away. He worked as a taxi driver for 30 years, now he does not communicate with anyone.

I love the sheer pettiness of these kinds of scandals especially back during the cold war era , imagine being one of the best, an almost surefire top 3 just to throw it away for the extra edge, not a good gamble lol
@sir_humpy2 ай бұрын
Sports in the cold war was obviously so much more about politics and proving through olympic victories which system was better, so in this regard both Soviet and American olympic hopefuls were under the kind of pressure that athletes from other nations didn't have. Although on a smaller scale this also happened whenever athletes from DDR and FRG met or N. and S. Korea, or China and USA. And even in this already tense Soviet vs US Olympic contest, the Soviets had additional pressure because of a purely materialistic reason. A medalist, aside getting a considerable money prize, had also a chance to improve his living conditions, skipping the years long line (even 10, 15 or even 20) to get a new or a bigger appartment, or buy a car that again it took years to get from ordering to the delivery. Winning a medal or placing high, would also ensure that the athlete kept his going-abroad privileges (OG, World, Europe championships and other int'l meets) and that was an important source of money on the side for soviet athletes through black-marketing of imported goods (alcohol, electronics etc). In a situation were the Soviet state was the sole employer and sponsor and you had no other legal sources of income, it was crucial for an athlete to be useful to the state in this medal-winning capacity for as long as possible also because this very much impacted on what he/she would be doing after the retirement at, say, 30. So yes, you went to great lengths to increase your chances to win.
