Once a year the people of Atherstone get together and a big ball is released at 3PM, everyone then kicks the shit out of each other until 5PM, at which time the person with the ball is the winner. The shops have to board up the windows the entire town stops for it, it’s been going since medieval times like 1200 or something like that.

If it's any consolation, we Brits struggle with the pronunciation of Gloucester, too. The name originates from a Roman Fort called Glevum (much easier to pronounce), which was situated where current day Gloucester is located. At Aarhus University in Denmark there's been a sort of regatta for many many years. It used to be a couple hundred people looking at some weirdos trying to sail over a very small lake, more of a puddle really, in insane home made boats that would sink halfway. If one made it across, the team would win. Probably a case of beer. Today the University has turned it into a major event with thousands of people watching the race. It's just a huge one day festival with drunk students pissing on everything and everyone. It has completely lost any charm it used to have.
