I remember when I first heard Never, Neverland I also felt I didn't love it as much as the previous records, but now every time I listen to it I love it more and it's become a 2024 favorite 🖤

I agree. Can't stop listening to Sparagmos. It's a masterclass in creating an atmosphere. Death's Knell Rings in Eternity is such a sick closer.

Spectral Voice definitely leaned harder into the doom side of things with this album, but I dig that style of death/doom, so not a disappointment for me. Ulcerate I can completely agree with you on, though maybe not for the same reason. My problem with it was more that it just goes on too damn long. Like, it starts out really great, but by the time I got to the title track, I was barely paying attention anymore. I feel like if they'd have cut like one track, the album would have been stronger for it. Think my biggest disappointment this year is the Narzissus full length. Had high hopes for it after all three of those EPs killed it, but I barely made it through the first song before noping out

I agree with your opinion about spectral voice having one of the most interesting sounds in modern death doom. Despite it not being better than the debut, I still enjoyed it. I love death doom and this band really understands the depth of harsh emotions and atmosphere it can conjure in a way no other bands does. That being said, if anyone has heard a better death doom album this year, I'd love to hear it.

Spectral Voice - Sparagmos was actually my favourite album of the year. My major disappointment was Swallow the Sun. It's the only album from them that I really dislike, preordered it as well but will never listen to it again

The new Spectral Voice didn‘t catch me as much as I thought it would either. The Unto Others album I really liked, although „Strength“ is still my favourite of theirs - and yes, there is much more filler on „Never, Neverland“ than on the first two. Have to disagree with Ulcerate though. One of the best of the year for me, almost on par with „Stare Into Death And Be Still“. Two that really disappointed me actually came from bands I was almost convinced could to no wrong - the new records by Swallow The Sun and Leprous.

I haven’t really had all that many disappointments this year, actually been an absolutely killer year IMO. Maul’s new album took me some time, but I slowly got there and enjoy it now.. Maybe Morta Skuld was the biggest let-down, but even so, I didn’t really expect much. Yeah, solid year

I can honestly say I’ve never listened to Unto Others. The new Spectral Voice is good for what it is, however, for what their first album sounds like compared to this it was a bit of a change that took a while to get on board with. I like it, but I can honestly say I haven’t listened to it nearly as much as the first and I can’t remember the last time I listened to it after I bought it. Ulcerate is a top 10 for me. I became a dissonance whore this year when normally I get bored with it.

I actually absolutely love new Ulcerate and think they have outdone the previous one. AOTY contender for me. But I love Gorguts "Obscura" and later albums so I guess that's on me ;)

Well, I totally agree with most of said releases. I lost interest in Unto Others, the time "Strength" came out. Discovered them with their first EP "Don't Waste Your Time" when they still were called Idle Hands. Enjoyed the shit out of this release and also "Mana". Even "Don't Waste Your Time II" spun so much on my record player, especially the track "It Doesn't Really Matter". Masterpiece! Even if their style isn't what I usually listen to, they are so catchy. But since "Strength" they kinda lost their magic for me. Same goes with Spectral Voice. This release is a bit overhyped in my opinion and kind of a letdown, especially after "Eroded Corridors.." and some great splits. Kinda generic Death/Doom imo. But I have to disagree with Ulcerate. They progressed to much over the years. I'm following them since "Vermis". While I agree that "Stare into Death..." may be their magnum opus, "Cutting the Throat of God" is at least on the same level for me. And the new songs are absolutely crushing live. For me, I was disappointed with the new Darkthrone, which was extremely boring, the new Bütcher (is this the same band that released "Bestial Fvcking Warmachine??) and with the latest Diocletian (but to be fair, they will probably never top "Gesundrian" imho).

Man, Ive gotta say something about the SV release. I genuinely was surprised to see it on THIS list, BUT also entirely see your points. With that said, THIS record is what I expected of the FIRST LP and never liked that one. The art was all wrong, the tones weren’t what I was hoping they’d be, and the writing is fine, but held back by the productions cleanliness. It was a bit sterile, and even “too safe” for me. Predictable even might be the right word. With THAT said, THISSSSS ONE, the NEW one…is so much more in line with their original concept, being closer to the demo. Writing is about the same, nothing crazy mindblowing, but its so much better in overall feel than that first lp. I actually didnt understand why everyone loved the first one hahaha, but I wanted to chime in, tell you that you should maybe treat it like that. Listen to the demo, then listen to the new one. Alright, Im done now. Haha

I felt like the demo in sound was more closely related to the debut, but in style it’s definitely more related to the new one. Bit of a weird contrast! I think what I’m trying to say is… I’m a fussy bastard and had some sort of childish expectation in my head, and just need to sit with Sparagmos a bit longer. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it a tonne, just wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Hey, rant away, sir! The passion is appreciated 😤🤘🏼

i really liked the into others but it’s my least favorite of the 3 so far. spectral wound i thought the first album was boring and ended up celling my copy so didn’t bother with the new one. Ulcerate I liked but not one of their best. for me I have a couple: Nile.Last album their best in 15 years and the new one by the time i get to side 4 I’m bored and ready for something else. Skeletal remains. Good album but nothing makes we want to go back to it,and my least favorite of their 5 albums by far.

Unto Others was definitely not NEARLY as good as their other albums. Was ok, definitely agree there. Ulcerate I definitely think was great, but they have some stronger albums in the past, still maybe a top 20 album of the year for me despite. Its very very good but it definitely isnt topping Stare into Death, Destroyers of all, Everything is Fire for me. Akhlys did this type of sound a little better this year imo. Loved Sparagmos a lot, it wasnt all that different but yeah still in my top 10 AOTY but it was gonna be damn near impossible to follow up the debut, but absolutely loved it, despite it being more funeral doom sounding. Easily my disappointment of the year goes to Swallow the Sun. You go from making beautiful melancholic Melodic Death Doom to now wanting to be a boring bland completely clean, soulless Shitty Pop rock/Alt metal band like Architects, BMTH with the occasional Doomy riffs and growls sprinkled here and there on this album to REMIND you that they are Swallow the Sun, just an absolute “WTF” type of album, i didnt like it, easily their worst album, its not even close. Hope that they can go back to at least making more Doom inspired music and not that ever again.

I have to go with the new albums by Opeth and Blood Incantation; probably the two most overhyped releases of 2024, and while both albums are actually quite good, to me they don´t live op to the high praise in my opinion.. The new albums by Swallow the Sun and PallBearer were just plain boring... In general, I also did not like the influx of goth elements in metal this year: Unto Others, Tribulation and Cemetery Skyline comes to mind... to me goth and metal combined is really not my cup of tea, I guess..

I got into death metal through technical and space themed death like Nocturnus, Decrepit Birth, Deeds Of Flesh, The Faceless, Rings Of Saturn etc so I was looking forward to something reminiscent of my childhood favorites!

Weirdly I really liked SV and thought Blood Incantation was kinda lame. Felt to me like none of the ideas on there had enough room to breathe/didn’t progress in an interesting way or have exciting structures or transitions. Saw SV play the new album live and it was fantastic, definitely improved my enjoyment of the album overall.

Agree as far as Ulcerate goes; AOTY for me easily, and as you say, perhaps their best album yet, which is saying something, considering their almost flawless discography! Like Matt said, the drumming of Jamie Saint Merat is second to none on 'Cutting the Throat of God', but praise has to go to guitarist Michael Hoggard also for creating some of the best, most brooding riffs and solos of the entire year! Love the slight post-metal tinge, that has crept into his playing style also... 👌
