The operator in the first call is driving me crazy with how she isn't comforting Luis, he's a kid and is clearly terrified, she should be telling him that the cops are on the way and that he's doing a good job at hiding and being brave. The second call is just as vexing. 'If you become unconscious, call 999' I'm ashamed that she works for the emergency services of my country.

There was a episode of Sword and Scale that discussed 9-1-1 operators and asking stupid ass questions under the guise of "getting necessary information" can get people killed if there isn't time. She reminded me of that and I'm just glad little Lou made it out okay because she definitely did the least to help

Teach the child a lesson in why it's bad to fake calls, BUT if it's real, you save a damn life. This isn't rocket science. The panic in the last girl too, is just soul-crushing. I have a 22 year old daughter of my own, and she did some stupid crap when she was a teen. She sounds almost the exact same.

@@Izzy_Oak agree. The second seemed to be more the fault of their policies. Seems like they will not send an ambulance for anything more than heart attack, stroke, or active internal bleeding. But these operators are not nurses or doctors. They shouldn't be the ones to triage that sht. I love how Canada does it. If you request an ambulance, you get it. If it's not needed, or was a fraudulent call, then you pay for their time, about $100-$200 here in Alberta. My daughter's boyfriend called one for her when she had a mental health breakdown and she was okay when they arrived, so we got a bill. Sucks, but I'm glad it was there, and they didn't question sending it out.

Classic NHS.. Healthcare is free here in England, but you never get help when you need it. I was on the waiting list for a simple ear surgery for 3 years, and eventually went deaf in that ear because I wasn't seen in time. I'm 19 now. I lost my hearing in that ear at 16.

The second call got to me. I had horrible gallstones and had to get two surgeries for it and one surgery was an emergency surgery and for months everyone thought I was faking it until I was in the hospital for a week. It's horrible to know the pain he went through and no one helped when he was reaching out.

I had the same issue. I thought it was a heart attack and I was told it was gas. Saw a doctor and he said it was gastritis. Finally went to the ER and they had to remove my gallbladder because of the stones.

If you EVER have some sort of urgent need for an ambulance and for whatever reason they are dismissing you like the Mark Hemmings call, say that you can't breathe and you've got 10 out of 10 chest pain.

I had to have my gall bladder removed via emergency after having pain for about a week. Pain started in my groin area so I thought maybe a pulled muscle until I could no longer walk upright or carry anything. Couldn’t even lift my arms. My gall bladder was completely infected and about to burst. They found a bunch of stones and I had to be on antibiotics for awhile. The gall bladder secreted the infection throughout my internal organs. It was one of the worst pains I’ve endured besides childbirth. Getting my hand caught in a meat slicer was less pain

Didn't have any stones, but I had to get my colon removed because of a tumor blocking the whole thing and stretching it to the point of almost getting ruptured. Went to the ER several times and got told I was faking my excruciating pain (got told it was mere constipation) and that the excessive bleeding was normal. Took me going to the ER for the fourth time in the month, at the verge of dying (so weak and throwing up everything that entered my stomach) for them to pass a CT scan and founding the tumor and then sending me to get an emergency surgery. If it wasn't for the ER doctor taking my case seriously, I would be dead today

Reminds me of a super frustrating (and somewhat controversial) case from Norway of a man calling the police because the dinner he’s having with two Americans has developed into an argument, and he’s sitting there calmly telling the operator that he’s being threatened. The operator doesn’t believe him and ends up getting pissy with him because he keeps calling, the man ends up being stabbed 9 (iirc) times and nearly dying

Agreed 100%, especially with call 3. Because it was a leg wound, operator didn't take it seriously enough, and yet you can bleed to death in MINUTES from a shot to the leg, if it hits a major artery. Soon as I heard the sounds that poor guy was making, I knew he was toast--not quite agonal breathing yet, as I could hear him trying to say things so he was technically conscious still, but ... that's not a sound mildly injured people make.

I know but that's the thing about guns. They may have a fault in them that causes them to accidentally discharge. I presume this may be an uncommon occurrence but it does happen. She was not at fault here. The rifle manufacturer was.

I agree. She sounds exactly like my daughter when she was a teen, and I was almost crying. But she was certainly brave and very attentive to his needs and what the operator was saying. She made a horrific mistake, but I pray that she can overcome this tragedy with the same bravery and grace as she showed in that call. I also hope she doesn't do it alone and seeks professional mental health care to do it.

Misfire or not his death was due to both of their negligent acts. But it was still an accident and I hope dearly that she is able to overcome the mental anguish with as much grace and maturity she showed on the 911 call. No one should have to watch a love one die like that.

Although of course 911 (or 999 here) operators are incredible, my mum had an awful experience when her dad (my grandad) collapsed. She called 999 as he had a fall, he was 73 and in a lot of pain, she called and they asked to speak to him. He said he was in pain and needed an ambulance and they said they would send one but it might be a while. 5 HOURS went by, she tried to call back after one hour but they said they were busy and to wait until they got there. she called back at the 5 hour mark and the woman said 'is he still in pain? does he need an ambulance?' my mum said 'yes' and the woman (same woman from the first call) said that THEY NEVER SENT ONE. Why? Oh because apparently my grandfather didn't sound like he wanted to go to the hospital and didn't sound in that much pain. They sent one (SIX HOURS after the initial call) and they found out that he had late stage lung cancer. They also refused to send an ambulance for my great grandma (his mum) when she had a stroke and said that the family could handle it and would probably recover. She did not and instead rapidly deteriorated. I feel like so many medical professionals go by the way a person presents themselves, if they aren't screaming in agony then it isn't that bad. The three times I had broken bones (once as a kid, then teen, then adult) I wasn't believed and they were reluctant to X Ray. My mums heart failure also wasn't caught because she had claudication in her leg and it was brushed off an arthritis because she 'didn't seem that bothered by it'. I do understand that it must be such a hard job in any medical profession, particularly as a 999 operator to make those decisions, and obviously they deal with so many people, but my god the stories of people not being believed and then ending up in a worse condition or dead really get to me due to these experiences.

The broken bone thing resonates so hard with me. I have an extremely high pain tolerance. Broken bones don't really bother me but I do go and get them looked at. I don't know how many times I've argued with doctors about whether things are broken or not. My last one was a couple of years ago. I have a small farm and one my goats got it's head stuck in a fence. While trying to get him free, he reared back and caught my hand between his head and the fence. Snapped the first and second knuckles in my little finger and broke the boxers bone. My finger was bent in 3 directions and sticking out sideways from my hand. I had an appointment the next day with my orthopedic doctor so I figured I would just show it to him instead of going and spending all night waiting in the emergency room. So I went over to my moms house around the corner as she is a former ER nurse, we reset the bones, slapped a splint on my hand and called it a night. The next day the doctor asked what I did, told him what happened and that it was broken. He took off the bandage/splint that we had put on and asked me to make a fist, which I mostly did, and he had the audacity to laugh at me and tell me that nothing was broken and that it was fine. Because according to him if it was broken I would have been crying and not been able to move it at all. I got mad, told him I demanded an xray which he finally agreed too after 20 minutes of arguing. He then told me I was all set and to go home. I wrapped my hand, checked out of the office and was just unlocking my car when he came running out in a panic yelling, "Get back in here. Your hand is shattered and we need to splint it." blah blah blah. I let him put a splint on it, left his office, found a new ortho doctor and never went back to him. The new doctor is amazing and has it written on the inside of my chart in big, bold red marker "If she says it's a 5 it's actually a 12 for normal people"

That second call was astonishing! I didn’t think they could do that. Say you don’t need an ambulance. Here in America if you call for one no matter how stupid the reason sounds to us they send one. Just in fact the other night my granny was losing her mobility functions and incoherent saying she was hurting everywhere. She couldn’t comprehend how to get her legs to work so it was hard moving her. So we call an ambulance and found out from mom one of the medics said to her the ER is full this shouldn’t have warranted an ambulance! Well guess what we found out she actually had a heart attack!

True. My aunt was dying from cancer a few months ago and when her husband couldn't get her out of her chair to get her in bed they would call an ambulance. They did this a few times when needed and they would come and get her into bed. Maybe it was because she was on hospice though but im glad the ambulance would come and help.

Those first two are unfortunately familiar for me. It would have been a year and a half ago or so, I realised that someone close to me was planning to attempt suicide. When he started rejecting my calls, I immediately called 999, but because I live in a different county than them, I got through to a different emergency service than the one I needed. It wasn't my first rodeo so I explained the situation and asked to be transferred to the correct county or for them to pass it on. Instead, the operator told me I was calling the wrong number and wasting their time (as if I can help where my call is directed when I call 999) and sje gave me the number I "needed" to call, and that number turned out to be the non-emergency line. Now, I'm not an expert in calls to emergency services, but I consider _suicide_ to be an emergency. Still, I sat on hold with non-emergency line because getting through to someone could surely do something and then four minutes in, the call ended abruptly. I was in full panic at this point because I was calling about someone attempting suicide. So I started the process again, and luckily this time the operator took it seriously and got the message through. I ended up developing PTS symptoms from that night and other nights previous that had been similar, but I had days where I couldn't go to our local Lidl because the voice over the tannoy system sounded too close to that of the first operator. I was having flashbacks and nightmares around it where I'd get stuck in a loop with that operator and I'd end up too late to save the person I was calling about. Listening to those calls sent me straight back holy shit.

I've learned recently that even suicide prevention hotlines can be pretty inefficient, putting people on hold, dismissing callers, not listening...it's absolutely sickening that even in spaces where you're supposed to be able to get help, that suicide is still very much treated as no big deal or someone just overreacting

One of them genuinely really helped me and I found a suicide prevention textline kinda helpful, but I've also sat on hold for half an hour with one and if my friend hadn't randomly messaged me at 1am, i don't know what I would have done that night and if I'd still be here.

I think one of the scariest thoughts pertaining to 911 calls is the 9/11 World Trade Center calls. Just knowing the fate of almost all of the people trapped in the towers and matching them to the desperation and fear in these calls is down right horrifying.

My 80 year old grandmother had to call 911 for my uncle once. Usually he just drives himself to the hospital but this time was bad. He has anxiety and depression so when the ambulance got there they kept trying to tell them that it was just an anxiety attack. My grandmother was insistent that they take him to the hospital. Turns out he was having heart failure. Luckily he was ok but he almost wasn't.

As someone that suffers with chronic gallstones (even though I don’t have my gallbladder anymore! Fun fact they can still form even if you don’t have one) so that second call frustrated me beyond belief. Gallstones, especially trapped ones are the most painful thing next to pancreatitis (which I also have chronically thanks to the gallbladder surgery.) thankfully I’ve never had a problem when needing to be rushed to the hospital for it.

all three of these operators pissed me off. the night my ex husband was arrested for almost taking out my left eye and was rampaging around the apartment we lived in at the time, the very first thing i did was give the address and told the operator what was going on. she then snapped at me and told me to “stop antagonizing him” (i was yelling at him to "just leave" and "get out, i called 911"). i screamed at her “IF HE WAS ANYMORE ANTAGONIZED HE WOULD'VE SHOT ME BY NOW, JUST SEND THE FKN COPS!!!!!!!” and continued to barricade myself in the bedroom while my ex was trying to batter the door down. you could audibly HEAR his destruction. the audacity of that operator victim-blaming me was over 9000. after an hour and a goddamn half they finally showed up, put him in cuffs, and took him away. it was an entire crime scene, photos taken and all. i got lucky that he didn’t own a gun and i was able to run to the bedroom with my phone on me. MY quick, instinctual reaction is what saved my life. the cops just showed up to take the trash out in the aftermath 😑

ive been the terrified person on the end of these calls before. the amount of straight terror and adrenaline in your body is unlike anything i’ve ever experienced before and hopefully will never experience again. my situation was most similar to the last, i was calling for an overdosed and unresponsive partner. the operator did an amazing job, so well in fact it felt like i was back on the other end of the call…. god bless people who answer these calls and can keep calm when someone’s world is falling apart.

The first time I heard the famous chimpanzee 911 call was on complete accident. It's in a song by Suicide Silence. "And Then She Bled". It's horrific and the way the dispatcher handled it was shameful. They're my favorite band now (or rather when Mitch was alive) but it really caught me off guard. I do recommend the song if you're prepared to hear it. Just know it's quite graphic. Listen to it and then look up the case.

in the second one, the guy keeps saying “im in agony though” whenever the lady said “you don’t need an ambulance.” he kept saying it even before then. (the captions say it’s unintelligible) it hurts to hear him ask for ambulance over and over again and telling everyone how much agony he’s in. you can even hear it in his voice the second time he calls. “can i have an ambulance? can i have an ambulance?” it’s almost as he’s screaming and crying out to just get help. it’s absolutely saddening.

I've found that trying to get an ambulence to you in the UK is terrible. I nearly died for the same reason as the man in the 2nd call, i couldnt hold any food or water down and had been bedridden for days on end with what i assumed at the time was a bad case of food poisoning, unable to move and calling for help. Mind i was 20 at the time and every time i called i was told "you're young, what you're experiencing can't be that bad you'll recover" despite telling them i couldn't even walk. The hospital was literally right across the street, towards the end i was begging them to just send someone from across the road to help and they simply kept refusing and telling me it wasn't neccessary. My partner carried me in his arms across the street to the hospital, where i was taken in and told if it had been just a few more hours i would have been dead as my kidneys were shutting down. There's now permanent damage to my kidneys and i'm told i'll likely have kidney problems when i'm older, all because they refused to help when i begged them to, i knew i was literally dying.

I am turning 21 in April and I am spending my time learning about new things. Such a guns, Knifes, And what not. Stuff like this really opens my eyes more on what I need to be training for. The operator in the first one needs to go back to training. Their job isn’t to determine wether it’s real or not. Their job is to listen to the problem take it serious. And send whatever help is needed. Then the people who take the call and are actually going to the house will deal with it
