Yay other people who loved "Empty Wake" too! It was my favorite as well, 100%. I thought it was so classically creepy and I was very much on edge while watching it. But I do think Ryan's opinion on it is probably very popular, as I know a couple people who saw this and also didn't care for that segment, and I've seen several other KZbinrs also say they thought it was the weakest one. Ha I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved it!

So the cynical answer is that whenever any company spams sponsoring all across KZbin (which vessi does (also see raycon, nordvpn, just about every supplement,...)) without any link to what the video is actually about, it usually means that their company is trash to mid tier quality at best. They just compensate through aggressive, constant marketing. An easy way to check this is to google that company's name and 'reddit' for actual reviews and discussion. Honestly I have mixed feelings about it. One one hand I want these KZbinrs to get paid, on the other hand a fat yikes for shilling.

10:43 Stephen King couldn’t have “lifted” the idea for Cell from The Signal, his novel was published in February of 2006 (it was also optioned for a film almost immediately) before The Signal had even started filming. The VHS franchise had even used the idea prior to Bruckner’s involvement, in Viral’s frame story it was heavily implied the madness and chaos consuming Los Angeles was being spread through internet videos.

You're right in this case. However, Stephen King 'lifts' quite a bit. From Pet Sematary basically being a retelling of The Monkey's Paw to a pivotal scene in Dead Zone being lifted almost completely intact from The Night has a Thousand Eyes.

The film making reference to militia groups, doomsday cults and societal paranoia isn't a commentary on "Trump's presidency", it's what literally happened in the Bush/Clinton era of the early 90s. See the militia group scare and subsequent gun control measures, Waco/Ruby Ridge, and popular fiction like The X-Files. Not everything is about Trump.

The only major weak spot for me in VHS 94 is the frame story’s ending, it’s the kind of illogical, unsatisfying “surprise twist” that lazy horror (and mystery) fiction loves using as a crutch. My only other real gripe (and it’s minor) is something you pointed out, the core theme (as much as it has one) feels a lot more late 2010s than mid ‘90s. Especially in “Terror,” the militia’s rhetoric was more in line with modern day MAGA chuds than ‘90s anti-government extremists. If it had been a cult like the Branch Davidians or a “lone nut” scenario like Ruby Ridge, the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh it would’ve felt a lot more 1994.

I have some big issues with found footage, although it's mostly the fault of movies not doing the genre properly. The movies rarely justify why someone is filming 100% of the time even when it makes literally no sense, the camera man somehow manages to perfectly frame things cinematically even when unaware of the lurking danger or while running or fighting for his life, and finally (this is actually an issue I have with the genre itself), is that there is usually absolutely 0 attempts to justify how we're watching this supposed "found footage" that contains people getting murdered for real in a cinema/on Netflix. This series is one of the few I can think of that actually does justify these things (at least mostly).

The problem I have with VHS 94, like all the other VHS films, is that the fact it's all vignettes and lacks any strong overall vision or directorial intention, thus causing the frame narrative to never really wrap around to anything. I was hopeful with 94 that, with the swat-cult frame and the first two shorts, there would be some broader narrative the actually diegetically connected them. This hope was gone by the Subject short

As someone who felt the all the prior VHS installments overall were either pretty meh, or downright forgettable, 94' absolutely blew me away. I came in with very low expectations, and was genuinely surprised how every segment was a total banger. Was really glad to see you cover this one.

I love some of these films. There are some shorts that are so iconic I still remember them years on. The cult from VHS2 and the funeral wake in 94 was so good.

His video was pretty good! Totally changed my perspective of the event. My only exposure to it before that was a criminal minds episode 😅

Really dug the first one. Loved the second one, and was told to stay away from Viral. Either I forgot about this, or it flew under my radar. Thanks, Ryan!

Waco was a cult. But did not have illegal firearms. Wendigoon has a great video breaking down the tragedy

The varying quality of the individual sketches of the first few movies causes the films to all blend together for me (without googling it, I'm not even 100% sure if I've seen the third one) and a lot of the less memorable sketches fall by the wayside of my memory, but I remember all the sketches from VHS 94. Maybe it's recency bias, but I feel like that still counts for something.

I was concerned that, with the previous posts we have seen from Ryan, that he was going to be quitting or at least slowing down on here. I'm glad the uploads are still coming and Ryan seems to be doing really well for himself. Keep it coming man, love your content!

The first time I saw Terror, I thought the militia was in a time loop, rather than the vampire regenerating. At the time, I was consuming media where time loops were more probable
