Thanks for the memories! Back in the 1970's when I was living in Chicago, Illinois I had two service calls in Irian Jaya for my company, Fisher Scientific. The plane ride from Australia was from Darwin the first year to Tembagapura. The second time we flew from Cairns because a typhoon the first time (which I narrowly missed) pretty much messed up Darwin. From the airport at Indonesia, the ride up ten thousand feet in the mountains to the Freeport copper mine was either by helicopter or by truck. Both times I missed getting to ride on the helicopter up and back. But boy, what scenery. I never did get to ask what animal life existed in those mountains. One memory from my first trip was at the mine's food building I got to meet two young missionaries who served the area. They had a small single engine Cessna to get around. Also in the Cessna they had a bicycle for additional transportation. What a life! I imagine things have changed considerably since then. Oh, by the way, the church I attend in Pensacola sponsors a married couple who are missionaries in New Guinea. Their name is Smith, but I don't recall their first names. Anyhow, God bless you brother. I'm retired now and relish these memories - and your videos.! Gerry

I've been watching his videos for a few months now. Typically his pre-flight routine (cut off, pull off, shut off) seems to be a lot of "going through the motions." This was definitely the most he has thought about it that I can remember. It peaked my interest a lot more, knowing it was a legit tricky take off.

My eyes bulge looking at ridge after ridge go by at '500' (the aircraft must be concerned also. She keeps reminding him it's a few feet to foliage). If engine failure, there is near zero time for the checklist...sorry, memory items. Just aim for a good crash site...if there is any.
@MissionaryBushPilot3 жыл бұрын
most of PNG doesn't have a good "crash site", so regardless if you are 10000' or 100', its still gonna suck
@brodricj30233 жыл бұрын
@@MissionaryBushPilot At least 10,000' gives you some time for options, and to get out a few radio calls. Lot's of aircraft prangs have happened in PNG where the pilot didn't have time to broadcast an emergency radio call and the aircraft wasn't noticed missing for many hours, and not even know where to start looking for it when eventually noticed missing.
@terryrogers62323 жыл бұрын
@@brodricj3023 I think that's what The rescue service calls are for. I noticed him terminating rescue service just before he lands each time. Then they are also calling in flight plans and doing reports like they are IFR. My presumption is that a long overdue termination call would mean a helicopter would get an airborne and trace the route. I am wondering if there is a crash locator beacon on the aircraft.
@brodricj30233 жыл бұрын
@@terryrogers6232 Even a missed in-flight position report they would have no idea where to start looking for you. You could be 50 miles away from your last known position on 30 minute reporting. All aircraft have crash locator beacons, and in about 90% of crashes they don't work.

Possible video idea: What is A Day in the Life for you (and/or your family) in Goroka? Do you maintain a similar style/standard of living as the locals? Is the internet fast enough for decent streaming tv? How often do you take the family abroad? I've found myself asking these questions while watching your awesome videos. The vlog with your wife, answered so many questions, but raised so many more. I respect that you may want to keep these things private, and at the end of the day, the content you provide is some of the most entertaining and high-quality content on this site. That was a bit scary, Ryan. The folks at Karamui should improve the airstrip with gravel and better drainage.
@johnsmith45893 жыл бұрын
Where do the gravel come from? How do they get gravel to a remote village? Who pays for the gravel? How do you get construction equipment into a remote mountain village? This is Papua New Guinea, remember, and all these remote airstrips are just that...”remote”. Just having enough area to put in an airstrip is a big deal, a lot of villages can’t have an airstrip. Improvements are a nice idea, but not always possible. 🤷🏻♂️
